Fall colors are appearing in the fo-liage, and winter must come. How-ever we, directors Carolyn Burnettand Karen Kaufman, have spring2010 active in our imaginations. We have been searching for inspi-ration and elaborating on our plansfor the musical and visual aspects

Its a Wonderful Life, a 1946film loosely based on an original

story The Greatest Gift written by Philip Van Doren Stern in1939. After being unsuccessful ingetting the story published, Sterndecided to make it into a Christ-mas card and mailed 200 copies tofamily and friends in December 1943. It was brought to the atten-tion of Frank Capra who immedi-ately saw its potential. Initially, itwas going to star Cary Grant but

the filming conflicted with another film he was making so - enter James Stewart.

It was common, back in the 30sand 40s, when movie stars fin-ished shooting a film, theyd turnright around and go into the soundstudio to create the entire produc-tion for the Lux Radio Theatre! This is exactly what the cast did

upon completion of filming. These movies for the ears wereevery bit as entertaining as their screen counterparts, using theoriginal scores and a host of soundeffects to create a version of themovie-colorized only by theimagination of the listeners.

The film was twice adapted for

radio in 1947, first on Lux RadioTheater (March 10) and then on The Screen Guild Theater (December 29). The film was alsoremade for television in 1977 as It

Happened One Christmas . A mu-sical stage adaptation, titled AWonderful Life written by SheldonHarnick and Joe Raposo was pre-

ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE - As youve never known it!

by Roger Sweeneysented in 1986. The film was alsoadapted into a two act play byJames W. Rodgers and first per-

    formed in December 1993.

The TITW production of Its aWonderful Life: A Live Radio

Play , is a stage production pre-sented as a 1940s radio showadapted by Joe Landry and first

produced in 1997. Much of thedialog and events will be readilyrecognizable from the movie andthe original radio broadcast.

    Christmas ShowAUDITIONS

Its A Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry will be directed by Roger Sweeneyfor the 2009 Christmas season.Production dates will be: Nov27-28-29 and Dec 3-4-5-6.

Auditions are scheduled forSept. 29, 6:30pm 8:00, atthe Erika Quam Theater inShell Lake. 2-3 men & 2-3women are needed

Although memorization will beminimal, actors will beplaying several differentcharacters and will need to de-velop several voices represent-ing the different characters.

RADIO SOUND EFFECTSA noteworthy adjunct to TITWs production of Its a Wonderful

Life is the sound effects that will be employed during the show. Thesesound effects are often referred to as Foley Effects and are inventedsounds using everyday common objects. The objective is to createsounds that support the impression of some physical activity occurringduring the dialog of the show.

The Foley Artist is the person who creates many of the natural, eve-ryday sound effects in a production. The term Foley artist is named af-ter Jack Foley, one of the earliest and best-known Hollywood practitio-ners of the art.

Rhonda Tisdell is the Foley Artist for this production and is alreadyexploring, assembling and improvising the sound effects you will behearing during the performance.

Heres how some effects are made:

Galloping horses Banging empty coconut shells together Kissing Kissing back of handPunching someone Thumping watermelonsBone-breaking blow Breaking celery or twisting head of romaineBird flapping its wings Flapping a pair of glovesFire Rapid opening and closing of an umbrella

along with the crackle of thick cellophane.
