Background Johnson Matthey is a global leader in science that makes the world cleaner and healthier. With over 200 years of sustained innovation and technological breakthroughs, our solutions improve the performance, function and safety of our customers’ products. Our science has a global impact in areas such as low emission transport, pharmaceuticals, chemical processing and making the most efficient use of the planet’s natural resources. Today our solutions include:

• Catalysts that prevent 40 tonnes of pollutants entering our air every minute; • Active pharmaceutical ingredients that relieve symptoms for millions of people each year; • Recycling technologies that conserve millions of tonnes of platinum group metal ore every

year. And we are using our science to create sustainable solutions for the future, such as class-leading battery materials technology to enable zero emission vehicles and a future of pollution-free roads. Today more than 14,000 Johnson Matthey professionals collaborate with our network of customers and partners to make a real difference to the world around us. JM is a company with world class science and technology at its core. We have around 1,400 scientists globally and we use our world class expertise to solve complex problems for our customers, drive growth for JM and help make the world cleaner and healthier. In a world which is becoming increasingly challenging, our expertise in science and our ability to scale it up, is a competitive advantage. That competitive advantage enables us to build close collaborative relationships with current and future customers. Collaboration and strong relationships with our customers are crucial in providing a high quality tailored service. Together, we put our inspiring science to work to enhance life. Most companies engage with JM for our world class scientific and technical capabilities, indeed our products sell on the basis of technical performance. We work closely with customers and partners applying our science and technology to develop solutions which enable them to bring their products to market faster, improve the performance of their products and reduce their environmental impact. This creates value for them; and it creates value for JM. A key driver for future growth in JM is our ability to engage with new customers and new markets through demonstration of our scientific and technical capabilities to design and deliver performance products. At our corporate research centre in Sonning Common, Reading UK many new customers come to meet us and understand more about our capabilities before joining us in a partnership to develop solutions to match their needs. JM is looking to build a Customer Innovation Centre (CIC) as a corporate showcase for our science capabilities, products and technologies that engages and inspires our customers and future partners who visit to learn more of what we can do together. Our preferred location for this centre is at our existing site in Sonning Common, near Reading. It is expected that the building will be an innovative and flexible space where a wide range of individuals, small and large groups can be accommodated in an integrated experience. The site is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and as such will need careful design and presentation for planning.

JM has recently undertaken a rebranding to present itself as a more unified single entity rather than a group of smaller separate companies supporting differing markets. This building will be part of presenting the single face of JM, reflecting the new brand positioning; “Inspiring science, Enhancing life”. Project Scale and Building Design Team involvement It is envisaged that the cost of the project is in the order of £6.0m + VAT including building fitting out costs but excluding the specialist display costs. We are seeking a multi-disciplinary design team to cover all aspects of the building from concept through interior layout and function, structure, services and construction. The winning team will be required to retain responsibility of the final design detailing, construction and commissioning to ensure the final building performs as the original design. JM believes that a unified design practice approach is essential for this type of project but does not exclude a group of designers (that have a proven record of working together on such projects) working on a proposal together. Innovation Centre Specification

The building is intended to be sustainable and must be aimed at least at fulfilling BREEAM 2018 Excellent rating and JM have the aspiration of making this building BREEAM Outstanding, higher consideration will be given to designs that can look towards a carbon neutral design. The building will form a major part of the visitor experience on site and as such a “Statement Building” is envisaged. This must work within the confines of the site and the AONB as well as being functional. The CIC element of the building must be flexible to accommodate a range of potential visitor experiences. The actual visitor experiences are being designed by an appointed “content design company” and it will be necessary for these ‘display and use’ concepts to be incorporated into the main building. All the features and requirements listed below are subject to final confirmation with JM and revision as the design process is worked through.

Features required within the building

• Main reception • CIC, display and meeting areas • Customer hospitality areas (drinks/ snacks / lunches) • Storage and support spaces for the CIC exhibits to reflect the need for function flexibility. • Support staff offices • The CIC visitor space should be able to cope with a maximum of 100 (non-seated) external

visitors but also be flexible to accommodate smaller groups in seated segregated rooms. • The building should be integrated into the site to allow good access to the other buildings.

Good management of pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the building is essential.

Competition Format and Timetable

The selection process is taking the format of an invited design competition with an open application and will be held over two phases. Phase 1 - Expression of Interest phase Up to 20 Page Expression of interest document and completed submission form Phase 2 – Initial Concept Design Approach phase It is envisaged that up to 4 practices will be shortlisted to proceed to the concept design approach phase of the competition. Shortlisted practices will be given further information and be required to outline their design strategy, their proposed approach to site and an idea of the look and feel of the building and interior spaces in:-

a) 2 x No. A1 boards b) a short design report c) a statement on costs/appraisal of the headline budget d) submission of a fee proposal e) a 3D visualisation of the design

Note:

This format is intended to select a multi-disciplinary team for the Project, not to select a design, but an approach to the design will be required as part of the submissions, to demonstrate an understanding of the project. It is important that the team describe the process of how alternative designs and technologies for structure, services etc. will be assessed and compared to select the final design.
