Communication Board

Use a communication board to talk about something specific.

You can also use it to better understand what others are saying.

The boards are a visual display of photos, pictures and/or written words.

Core Board A Core Board is a communication board that uses high frequency words, also known as Core words. Core words are important because they make up approximately 80% of what we say, and we can use these words in lots of activities and situations to comment, give directions and join in with others.

E-Tran Board Use eye contact to spell out words using an E-Tran board to your communication partner. The board is a see-through Perspex board with the alphabet and numbers displayed in eight sections.

The E-Tran board is placed between you and your communication partner. Points with your eyes to indicate letters and spell out words. Your communication partner follows your eye gaze to see the message you spell out.

Targeted Expressive Communication AidYou can use a targeted communication aid to send a message in a given situation, routine or about a specific topic. These aids can assist you with active participation and choices.

Aid name DescriptionCommunity Request Cards

Community Request Cards are used by a person who cannot speak or who are difficult to understand.

Use these cards to request items and services while you are out in the community. Instead of using speech to request an item or a service, gives or shows the card for the other person to read. The content on the card explains what you want with all the details needed for your request to be met.

My Day Book

These books are a valuable way of using pictures and photos to share information about the things that you do in your day. They can be useful for people who need visual reminders, have limited vocabularies, or need support to structure a recount. My Day Books allow for communication about the things that you have been doing, where you have been, who you saw, how you have felt, anything different or special that has happened and may also include other information such as reminders for the next day.

Receptive communication aids and visual supports for understandingYou can understand spoken information more easily with a visual support.

These aids can support, enhance or add to a message so that you can better understand a situation, or another person’s words.

Aid name DescriptionPicture Based Timetable

You can use a visual timetable with cues about the daily routine, to help recognise and anticipate activities that will happen during the day or week.

A timetable can also be used to encourage choice making, for example, you might decide the order of your afternoon tasks, or see when you have scheduled your preferred activities.

Budget Wheel

The Budget Wheel has been designed as a way to match the amount of money you have with the different expenses that happen over a week. Each piece of the wheel can be used to represent the cost of an item and activity. As you spend money, it is placed on the wheel. When the wheel is full, no money is left.

It may be useful for you to have a visual support to help manage their money. It allows you to understand how to budget, so that your income does not exceed your expenditure.

Picture Based Calendar

A calendar may be useful for you to have a visual support to remind you about what appointments or special events ahead.

It can reduce anxiety, let you know about unexpected things, and give you time to prepare.

Activity Schedules

Activity schedules break down daily activities into smaller steps enabling you to be more independent in particular tasks.

Shopping Lists

You can use a shopping list to pre-plan what you want to buy, or indicate if you want something extra or different.

Shopping Lists need to be individualised to contain grocery and personal items.

This allows for active choice and control.

Chores Chart

It may be useful for you to have a cue to remind you of the jobs that need to be done at home or work, and to feel a sense of accomplishment once you have done them.

A Chores Chart has been designed with photos or pictures to show the daily or weekly tasks within the home or work environment.

It assists with activie participation.

‘Who’s Here Today?’ board

A ‘Who’s Here Today’ board displays the whereabouts of different people. It can prepares you for who to expect to see, any unexpected changes, and reasons why staff or others are away. This is a tool that can support your choice and control.

Picture stories/Social stories

Picture stories or social stories are tools to help you better understand a specific social situation and how to interact in an effective and appropriate manner.

It supports you to participate in situations or activities that would be difficult otherwise, and undertake safe and meaningful exchanges.

Objects of Reference

Objects of Reference may be suitable for people who can understand that whole real objects can represent things, activities and events. The objects selected need to look, feel or have something to do with the item or activity they represent e.g. a piece of towel that smells like chlorine for swimming.

Objects of Reference can be used for making choices. Instead of using real objects, object symbols representing items or activities are offered for the person to choose between, e.g., hairbrush = please brush my hair, hand lotion = please give me a hand massage. Objects of Reference can also be used to help the person understand what is going to happen in their day. Daily or weekly events and routines may be identified by the object symbol associated with the event or activity, e.g., purse = shopping; seat belt buckle = go in the car.
