    TAKE-HOME ASSIGNMENT

    Instructions:

o Assignment should be carried out in groups ofNOT MORE than 10.o Assignment is due one month (1) from the date of issue.o All members in the group are required to present their final report.o All write up must be computer type set with clear illustrations in a

    NETWORK MANAGEMENT

Rwatamagufa School of Informatics comes up as one of the most brilliantinitiatives of the century. It is a symbol of success in a growing nation

Only last year on 1st January 2009 the new government of the republicannounced $110 million funding for the Schools next generationresearch network- RSI*net 2. This document outlines a possiblearchitecture for that network as well as a research project whoseimplementation will go over a ten year period in two distinct phases, 1

    and 2.

The overall objective of the RSI*net 2 network (phase 2) is to build theworlds first customer empowered optical IP network where users initiallyat Gigapops, but eventually individual institutions and ultimately atdesktops will be able to purchase, setup and manage their own optical wavelength networks. Using a setup and manage their own opticalwavelength networks, using a set of concepts called Web service (WS) andobject oriented networking (OON) this architecture will ensure massivebandwidth interconnectivity to support applications in basic researchand such as advanced high performance distributed applications called

grids or escience that will be carried out not only betweenRwatamagufa School of Informatics Departments and research centresbut within our communities.

More significantly by using WS to manage optical networks, the networkelements and network functionality can be treated as simply another setof services with a resource discovery process, communication and

nomenclature consistent and seamless with other web services. Thusnetwork services can be a seamless part of larger computational and peerto peer grid projects.

The purpose of this discussion document is not to provide details on atechnology solution but outline the architectural framework for aresearch program that will lead ultimately to customer ownership andcontrol of their own light paths across an optical infrastructure.

In phase I, The school, which brings together 3 semi independentinstitutions, is to implement an integrated inter-campus network, toenable efficient communication and sharing of resources between themain campus and the 3 semi independent institutions located indifferent regions of the country. This was contained in the schoolsstrategic plan developed way back in December 2001, when theRwatamagufa School of Informatics was launched.

This will be an effort to improve the existing independent LANs at themain campus as well as at each of the Institutions.

The main campus has a population of 10000 students and 250 staff where as each of the colleges has an average of 120 students. Thecurrent facilities include 12 computer labs with 30 computers each on anindependent network segment, 5 internet centres, several user

departments including the faculties and 15 administrative departments

The current network is quite inefficient and does not provide for fullintegration of resources.

As a student of ENAM, you have been contracted as a consultant todesign an efficient intercampus network that enables full integration ofresources.

The Rwatamagufa School of Informatics is desired to implement e-learning technologies with full multimedia integration and to automate

the main services like; admissions processing, registration, feespayments, transcripts processing evaluation etc to its clients.

Additional data Design a suitable LAN for each of the labs and centres.

Construct an illustration to show intercampus network layout as asolution to the network problem through definition of requirements, selection of devices, physical and logical assembly.

Define specifications of network requirements, transmission media,IP address and sub netting schemes.

Illustrate Internet connectivity and choose a suitable ISP. Suggest measures for effective network administration.

RequiredDraw a series of essential Network diagrams of your solution detailingthe following with clear specifications. Justify your recommendations

    a) The LAN layoutsb)

The internet work structure.c) Network size

    d) Addressing scheme; internet connectivity and choice of ISPe) Network hardwaref) Network transmission mediag) Network softwareh) Data management, transmission and sharingi) Network administration and security policyj) Intranet and extranet implementation

    Hint:

Include all technical specifications in your diagrams, justify yourrecommendations and be as creative in your solution as possible.

Prepare a 5 slide presentation to summarize your project and to supportyour documentation.
