Hey Everybody!My name is Tek.

I’m going to be your guide today! I’m a part of i-SAFE America, and we are concerned with helping you to be safe online.

We want you to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive or unlawful online behavior, and we hope to empower you to communicate what you learn from i-SAFE with others.

 

All right – Let’s talk Empowerment

Remember - Empowerment means you own what you learn and can use it to teach others and make a difference.

So not only are you learning and sharing, you are getting rewarded for doing so!

i-SAFE includes an empowerment activity in every lesson. By completing the activity you may be eligible for neat incentives and prizes.

The Plan

For this lesson you will be learning about cyber security – things like viruses and malicious code. Your activity will be to write a skit or scenario.

All Right – Let’s Get Started With a Review!

• Remember – we are all members of an online community when online. What are some of the benefits of an online community.

• Think of some of the negative sides of an online community. – Today we will be learning about some of these

negatives: online security issues such as viruses or malicious code.

• What is your definition of a virus?

• What is your definition of malicious code?.

A virus is a computer program that is designed to replicate by copying itself into the other programs stored in a computer. It may have a negative effect, such as causing a program to operate incorrectly or corrupting a computer's memory.

Teacher’s choice:For a classroom with computers, return to the Cyber

Community folder on the CD and select HTML Activities. Follow the link: “Begin Here”. Students should work in groups.

When complete, conclude here with Slide 16.

Now it’s time to learn a little about cyber security.

All right – let’s get into groups. Your teacher will divide you up for our next activity.

Group Directions

1. Each group should have activity pages that cover malicious code.

2. In your small groups, you should read and discuss the information on computer viruses and malicious code.

3. After you have read over and discussed the material, each group should write a skit or scenario on it.

Scenario and Skit Writing

Using what you have learned from your group work, your group will write a short scenario or skit on something to do with cyber security, which includes the presentation of a problem associated with the topic and an appropriate solution.

Skit Presentations and Discussions

Each group should present their short skits to the class.

As a class, discuss the skits and what you have learned about viruses and malicious

code.
