The Lloyd District, seated prominently on the Willamette River in Portland’s central city, has strong potential to grow into a vibrant destination for arts and entertainment in the city. The proposed network of public open spaces and pedestrian/bike routes throughout the district will connect a number of entertainment and cultural venues including the existing Moda Center, Veteran’s Auditorium, Convention Center, Lloyd Center Mall, as well as the proposed Waterfront Amphitheater and Broadway Playhouse Plaza. Infill blocks and new construction will also accommodate residential and retail uses. The improved street grid prioritizes pedestrian and transit circulation and takes advantage of opportunities for new and beautiful green stormwater infrastructure.

Active Third SpacesActive Third Spaces
Parametric Driven DesignWhat creates a walkable and active streetscape? What creates an inviting and comfortable third space? What conditions promote active street / third space interactions?
A digital analysis tool was developed to measure these spatial qualities and elements that contribute to active third spaces (places where people meet, gather, and spend time outside of the home and workplace). This tool allows for investigation and analysis of existing spaces in order to test design iterations that intend to generate active third spaces. Outputs of this tool have driven design of the building interior, envelope, and urban site conditions.

Design/Build
Sukkot and the SukkahThe sukkah is designed to be a multi-use, lightweight, affordable and re-useable frame structure that sections and shades the courtyard for services in the important festival of Sukkot. Traditionally, the sukkah is an ephemeral structure built of built of pervious natural materials under which a traditional meal may be eaten. The frames of reclaimed wood, bamboo, rope, burlap, and traditional interwoven aromatic branches are organized in bays mimicking the overall shape of the small courtyard in which it is placed. This particular sukkah was designed and constructed by a student-run design-build group of six who led a youth construction team in a rebuild session the following year.
