ROTARACTIONCYPRUS ROTARACT NEWSLETTER

SEASON 2013-14

ISSUE 14

EditorialSomeone once said that every

ending is a new beginning. In this

last issue of the Rotaract year 2013-

2014, we are delighted to have Lana

Shahin say a few words as the DRR

of the new Rotaract year. In this issue,

let’s have a look at the last projects of the

year, let’s meet the new boards of the clubs,

meet the new district team, have a look at

what happened at the fellowship and more. We

wish you enjoyed the past year as much as we

did and we wish you an awesome summer ahead.

Another Rotary year ended a couple of days ago, and a new one just started. New beginnings always hold in their folds new ambitions,

bigger visions and higher hopes. And I started this year with sky-high hopes and endless visions and ambitions.

But before we go into those visions, I am sure most of you do not know much about me. My name is Lana Shahin, the youngest in my family;

an architect by profession and a passionate Rotaractor every second! I am turning 26 in November and I have been a Rotaractor for more than 7 years…

Rotaract has been part of my family for many years even before I joined Rotaract; it grew in me, became a part of me, and I grew in Rotaract. It taught me team work, leadership, consideration, acceptance, tolerance and appreciation.

Throughout all these years, I have served unconditionally, never stopping and always with bigger and greater motivation. I initially took the role of secretary, and then became the president of my club “Rotaract Club of Amman”. The year I became a president: Rotaract Amman was in its most critical situation since 1982 –its chartering date-. I handed over Rotaract Amman to its current president after two years in my position with 25 very active members making Rotaract Amman of the strongest clubs in Jordan and the district. The year after I was Jordan’s VDRR, and now I am honored to be serving with each and every one of you as the District Rotaract Representative.

I got a phone call on the 1st of July this year, congratulating me for officially taking office, and was asked how does it feel to be

the DRR...well it feels overwhelming, exciting and just a little bit scary. But mostly exciting and hopeful! The RDC and I are work-

ing hard to take our district to reach new heights. We feel that we need to focus on higher impacts on society and a stronger

public image. We also need sustainability – be it internally in the club or in service projects. And accordingly we need

to train our clubs and lead them by example. We need to “Brighten the Way”.

Dear all

Members of Rotaract from all over Cyprus met for the second time this Rotaract year for the summer Pancyprian Fellow-ship.

This time, the group met in Pa-phos on the 27th of June until the 29th.

The weekend was full of ice breaking activities, beach activ-

ities, lots of food, dancing and amazing fun.

The point of the fellowship was to get all Rotaractors together and get to know each other in a very fun and at the same time relaxing environment.

Special thanks goes to the or-ganizing committee that made sure everything went smoothly.

We look forward for the next gathering!

members of Rotaract Larnaca Kition visited the “Shield of Ai-antas” premises where they de-livered school supplies worth of

500 Euros. The funds were raised through the last project of the club for the year that took place during Kataklis-mos.

The “Shield of Ai-antas”, is a Non Profit Organiza-tion that has been

created in memory of Aiantas Loizou, who at the age of 5 was attacked by a dog while he

was with his family in a friendly house in Skarinou.

Elina Motitou, the mother of Aianta founded “The Shield of Aiantas” non-profit in his mem-ory.

For the third year in a row, Rota-ract Larnaca Kition participated in the Kataklysmos of Larnaca. The Kataklysmos fair in Larnaca is the biggest event of the year where people from all over Cyprus join.

Being part of the Kataklysmos is not only about fundraising but mostly about creating awareness of our club. This year Rotaract Larnaca Kition members drew on rocks, collected some second hand books, had a small game for kids and had some marshmallows with melted chocolate for our little friends.

Members attended two days with their full positive energy. This year the money collected was decided to go to “Shield of Aiantas” a Non Profit Organization that has cre-ated by volunteers in cooperation with the Municipality of Larnaca, as an extension of the Social Gro-

cery Municipality that would con-tain anything other than food, such as appliances, furniture, clothing, shoes, toys, books, and more.

The total amount of 500 Euros was collected. We would like to take this opportunity and thank all the Rotaractors from all the cities that showed their support by visit-ing our stand.

It is with no doubt that this Ro-tary year has been an extreme-ly successful year and that wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of Peter Ashdjian.

The past year has been a very busy year and with the work he has achieved, he has set high

expectations for the coming years.

An amazing night was orga-nized at Galu Seaside with a lot of Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends attending the event.

Rotaract Larnaca Kition show-ing their support as usual and was present to celebrate the night where Peter Ashdjian handed over the presidency to Roula Panayiotou.

We wish the new President all the best in her demanding but exciting role, and to remind her of our constant support.

As usual, Rotaract Larnaca Kition members enjoy support-ing our sponsoring Rotary Club.

Rotary Larnaca Kition in col-laboration with Atelier di Pit-tura organized a retrospective

art exhibition of the students on the 20th of June.

Proceeds from the sales of the works of art were used in sup-port of the “Pediki Exochi” as-sociation who support 95 fami-

lies monthly with food baskets.

A decent amount was collected and was given to the associa-tion to support its goal.

Rotaract Club of Nicosia

Rotaract Club of Nicosia organized its handover ceremony on the 20th of June at ‘Garden Café Res-taurant’ in Nicosia. The night was

dedicated to the celebration of the closure of an amazing Rotary year 2013-2014, with our leader Niovi Georgiade, a year that was fruitful of events and imagination. As our tradition, on the change over night we had a video projection of all the moments during the year, gifts to the visitors and the pining of the new board.

A new Rotary year is beginning and Rota-ract Club of Nicosia tend to hit the ground running with new ideas and events.

The handover party was com-pleted with success and the new president Antonia Hadjicosta was assigned in the presence of Ro-taract Nicosia Aspelia and Ledra along with the Rotary and friends of the club.

As part of our community service projects, we decide to contrib-ute the younger generation and we believe that the environment that accommodates and supports

children in need should be more friendly and welcoming. Rotarac-tors decided to buy and place wall stickers at Makario hospital, specifically to the rooms that sup-

port psychologically children with eating disorders (Eating Disorder Centre).

Members of Rotaract Club of Nicosia view the presentation that was organized by their member Giannis Gi-annelakis on school bullying. As a major problem in our generation, with kids that have to accept their own as well as others identity, disability and family history, bullying seems to be an issue that still even in 2014 causes trauma in the environment of the school as well as the social aspects surroundings of children. There-fore RCN decided to create a discussion upon this matter as well as a video presentation on the reasons and ways of dealing with this problem.

Rotaract Club Nicosia Aspelia

It’s already been a year since

our inauguration and we want-

ed to celebrate our Club’s 1st

birthday appropriately. What

better way than a beach party?

The beach party was held at

KOT Beach in Oroklini on the

21st of June. The Club mem-

bers had arrived at the scene

early on the day to set up the

place. The beach was quickly

transformed into a party venue

with our members taking roles

as barmen/women, bouncers,

ticket officers and PR.

Guests started arriving around

8 o’clock and were soon pos-

sessed by the rhythms of the

music. We all had a blast, danc-

ing and partying until the very

late hours.

The net proceeds from the par-

ty will be donated to the Cyprus

Anti-Cancer Society and those

affected by the recent floods in

Serbia - through the local Ro-

tary Club.

Finally, the Club would wish

to express its gratitude to the

sponsors Hanadjias & Zenios

Homes, Etapol, Party ice, Kin-

navari and Music Kiwi.

Happy Birthday Rotaract Club Nicosia – Ledra!!

RI President Gary C.K. Huang

chose Light Up Rotary as his

theme for 2014-15. Mr. Huang

is urging club members to Light

Up Rotary by hosting a Rotary Day in their com-

munity, continuing the fight against polio, and

increasing club membership. “Light Up Rotary is

more than our theme. It is how we make a differ-

ence — every day, in every club, and every coun-

try we serve.”

A final, final note!As the Rotaract year 2013-2014 has come to an end, it is with mixed emotions that we sat to do the final issue of the newsletter.

We would like to tell all the Rotaractors what a pleasant experience it was for both of us to work on the PR team.

It has helped us come close to other Rotaractors and improve our skills.

We would like to thank each and every one of you that helped us throughout our journey!

The PR team of 2014-15 is bigger and more excited than ever before! See you soon!
