REHAMPING

D-Space Interface



During the past several months Rehamping has been designing and (now)building a permanent, multimedia, and interactive showcase for Division III work.We have received a $10,000 grant from the COCD and a $4,200 grant from theDevelopment Of ce. We are currently fabricating the Showcase at an off-campusprofessional wood studio. It will be installed on the main oor of the library, in the far corner where the new sitting area is.

The Showcase will create a lively and active space where people can connectwith past, present, and future Division III work.The goal is to archive studentwork in many different media, not just text. Media can include lm,interactive technology pieces, video, photography, documentation of dance,sculpture, drawing, painting, architecture....anything!

The new showcase will have a large LCD screen that will display work in progress, upcoming events, Div III solicitations, and work from thearchives. The idea is to create a program that can pull images and video clipsfrom a new Div III digital archive, in random order or other wise and display themon the screen with a tag. Alums and graduating students will be able to uploadimages and video to the database. There will be several elds that they must ll

out, like name, graduation date, title, committee, description, and tags. I put somesample slides on our blog: http://rehamping.tumblr.com/ and in the subsequentpages. The program will pull from this database and generate the constantly changing slide show, which will be on permanent display in the library and ideally accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

This screen will show digital documentation of Division III work (and process!). Many mediumscan be shown, including video, animation,and documentation of large-scale work. Inaddition, upcoming Div III events, presentations,performances, workshops, and gallery openingscan be posted. This semester we will establishthe update system by creating a blog with aninteractive calendar. This will enable Division IIIstudents and alums to post announcements andupload slides, video, etc.

Forty- ve removable shelves infuse theShowcase with extreme exibility. Asrepresentative medium evolve, this wired andtransformable display will be able to adapt.

Students can solicithelp, rant andrave, post Div IIIannouncements andevents, and see whatother Div III studentsare currently doing.

This workstation will prominentlydisplay the extensive onlineD-Space Database so thatstudents, prospective students,faculty, and staff can browse.Increased visibility will help makepeople aware of this valuableresource, accessible from anycomputer.

A series of 11 uniquely shapedcubbies comprise the structuralsystem of the Showcase.Within them, below them andaround them, Division III work in many different mediums canbe displayed. Cubbies will haveelectrical outlets for lighting,digital installations, additionalscreens, etc.

Individual shelves that are not in use can bestore in the base of the Showcase. A longpanoramic hinged door allows for the shelves tobe invisibly stored, but very accessible. Curatorswill not have to search for shelving, the unit isself-containedspecs: 7” x 221”

There are two major components that transform what would be just a book shelf into a dynamic, interactive, and living celebration of Div III work. First, the physi-

cal, exible design of the showcase lends itself to being rearranged in countlessways. Shelves can be densely packed to hold small media, spread far apart tohold larger work. All can tilt up and down. There are long metal rods that can spansections to curate paintings or other hung media. Deep shelves can hold artists’books, sculptures, and other art objects.

The second component is the LCD screen and database (and the focus

of the proposal for dart).

D-space, our current digital archiving tool for Division III work is unter-utlized and

uninspiring. A great volume of thesis work is lost every year as students graduateand leave no documentation of their work behind. Visual media are the mostephemeral in the current situation.

The new database would be available for any current and past graduates tosubmit their work. The following is a schematic example of what that data basemight contain.
