Principles of metrological supervision
0 Introduction
T$e landscape in t$e field of legalmetrology $as c$anged considera,ly in
recent years" mainly due to t$e effects ofli,erali&ation" elimination of tec$nical,arriers to trade on a regional ,asis"privati&ation9 contractori&ation and a +ideuse of accreditation.
Firstly" voluntary accreditation andvarious mutual recognition agreements$ave no+ covered in a systematic +ay anum,er of areas in metrology t$atot$er+ise mig$t ,e a target of metrological super-vision )measuringinstruments in non-regulated fields ofmetrology" national standards anddissemination of units of measurements"etc.*.
Secondly" conformity assessment
procedures ,ased on uality systems and
ot$er tools are sometimes used for placinglegally controlled measuring instruments
on t$e maret and putting t$em in use"
replacing tradi-tional type approval andinitial verification pro-cedures.

:ractical considerations in t$e preparationand implementation of legislation invarious countries may reuire anetension of t$e scope of metrologicalsupervision as defined in t$eInternational Vocabulary of Terms inLegal Metrology )I('* D2E ,ecause t$eeisting supervisory infrastructures andt$eir epertise can ,e usedadvantageously for t$e ot$er forms ofsupervision specified ,y t$at legislation.
