APRIL2014 Yay! Spring is here!... FINALLY!! It has been a long, cold

winter – which has been excepti onally great for the 2014 Ice Racing season (the best we've had in many years) – but now, it's ti me to go play ... and get dirty! There seems to be some questi ons out there about newspaper coverage. I want to make VERY CLEAR this plain and simple fact ... if you want your division, track, event, racer, sponsors, etc. to be featured in this news-paper, you or someone in your division needs to sit down and scribe something! It doesn't get writt en by yours truly, and it doesn't just magically appear here. Period.

On that note, as always, a BIG THANK YOU to this month's contributors. I hope you all know how much it means to me, and the rest of our readers. So thanks again for giving of your ti me so generously to write about your division and helping spread the word about District 14.

FORD FIELD (Detroit,Mi) | March 15story and photos by SpeedPunksImages.com

Ford Field was the venue for the fi rst ti me in 6 years for Monster Energy Supercross. With a record crowd of 50,856 fans and a Silvedome throwback secti on of the track that went up into the stands it was a great night for Supercross and Detroit both.

But the night belonged to the Yoshimura Suzuki’s #7 of James Stewart as he grabbed his 48th career main event win. The win ti ed him with Ricky Carmichael for second place on the all-ti me win list. James looked strong all night in practi ce and advancing to the main with a heat #1 win holding off the #800 of Mike Alessi.

Tonight's win was Stewart's 3rd of the season also 3rd ti me he has won at Ford Field, giving him the most wins at this venue.

Michigan riders #20 Broc Tickle (Holly, MI) & #27 Mafi a Moto Crew rider Nick Wey (Dewitt , MI) were on hand and made the return to Michigan to race in front of the massive hometown crowd. Both would make the main event with Tickle fi nishing in the top 10 (6th) and Wey fi nished the night in 17th.

Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Cole Seely won the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Stewart in second and Dean Wilson on the Discount Tire Racing/TwoTwo Motorsports’ Kawasaki in 3rd, but was passed by Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart Wins!

Ryan Villopoto at the end of the opening lap. After Lap 1, Stewart passed Seely for the lead, and on Lap 4, Villopoto passed Seely for the second spot, Wilson would fall back and finish 12th after being the fastest in qualifying and a good finish in his heat race.

On lap 8 Seely spun out, and Red Bull KTM’s Dungey made the pass for third place. after 10 of 20 laps Stewart’s lead was 5.9 seconds and would increase as the race went on.“The track was slippery tonight, so it was easy to put your bike on the ground,” said Stewart. “I pulled a nice gap in the middle of the race, but I let it go as time went on. It has been a while since I have raced here in Detroit, and it was an awesome night.” Villopoto and Dungey finished second and third respectively, marking the seventh time each has visited the podium this season. “I was able to get a good start tonight,” said Villopoto. “I made a mistake down the start straight but did regroup. It wasn’t enough, but I walked away with the points lead as we head into Toronto next weekend.”

The Regional 250SX Class with the young gun rookie Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo winning his 3rd win of the season and adding to his already large points lead. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team has dominated the 250 class all season with Martin Davalos and Blake Baggett also having great season as well. Baggett would finish the night at Ford field in 3rd and Martin in 6th.

Davalos led the field through turn 1 grabbing the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award to begin the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event. Cianciarulo and GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle worked their way through turn 1 in second and third,on Lap 2 Davalos went down in the corner before the finish line. This allowed Cianciarulo to take over the lead with Bogle following . At the halfway point, Bogle trailed Cianciarulo by 1 second, and

How did you get into riding and racing dirt bikes? My dad raced in Camel Pro Flat Track Series, was probably inevitable for me to ride. Sometimes you can still see the Camel Championship Jackets around the tracks if you look.

Do you think Camel is a viable sponsor for D14 Ice Racing in 2015?Maybe, they did sponsor Flat track for a while when my dad raced.

Trick question, I don’t think they would be well received to many, lol. Does your dad still race?Every once in a while he will get an itch to go fast so we'll go out to the lake and he usually shows me the fast way around the track, ha-ha.

So would you say he is your coach, mechanic, sponsor, or hero? All of the above

Did he and or does he smoke camels?Nope HAHA

Awesome minus one for big tobacco, their marketing to our youth didn’t work that time! I think were all glad to see the AMA go in different direction there.

What was your first-ever win in any form of motorsports?Do you remember how you felt?I won an Ice race at West Branch on my 85 when I was 11, and I felt like a stud hahaha

Have any bad crashes? Cased a double at Baja Acres practice on my 85, got knocked out for 4 minutes

So you woke up an ice racer then?Yeah pretty much haha

What's the hardest thing about Ice racing?Keeping the bike going forward rather than sideways, and always being prepared for changing track

conditions. In ice racing the track Is constantly changing.

Do you have any special things you do to get yourself ready for the ice season?Staying in shape is very important, and I’m on the high school wrestling team.

You race TT and Short Track in the summer, how similar or different is it from racing on the ice? It’s actually very different, the ice is not as forgiving for mistakes for over or under turning. In dirt, if you miss your line the track will let you slide out safe and recover more, on the ice, it can grab you and toss you in any direction.

Why do you race Ice Race, and what is it that drives you to go so far in this sport?I just love to ride no matter what, ice is all there is in the winter.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?Ice Racer of the Year 2014 for sure, that felt good.

Who is you toughest competition and why?Parker Norris always has something for me, I have to be on look out for him all the time.

Where do you see in the future of Ice Racing? It definitely seems like its growing,,,

What about the lack of youth entries this year, any thoughts?

Definitely think we can advertise more where the kids race in the summer.

What does your dream Ice Race track look and feel like, round or TT?Big old wide smooth half mile, no snow no bumps

Have any special obligations to your sponsors?I just thank them every chance I get, publicly and private.

Want to try Ice Racing a quad next year?Yeah sign me up, anything with a motor I’m in!

Ok, Ill set you up with my loaner, don’t break it gets a little hairy in our class fast.Yeah you guys are crazy, lol.

Shout outs and thanks? My Dad Dave Rabinett e, Uncle Steve Rabinett e, Curti s Collins, Craig and Rick Parkinson, Shannon Ashbaker, can’t do It alone.

Is Spring fi nally here? Let’s all hope so. We all have cabin fever and everyone seems itchy to get the season started.

This year we have a great line up of ATV Championship races over the summer and some new places to race. It's ti me to get everyone together again, and get this party started!

Please check the schedule in this newspaper, and also keep your eyes the Facebook page “ATV MX Racers of Michigan” for updates, should they arise.

There is a rule change this year, that allows youth riders under 15 years, to run more than one big track class per day.

There is also a new youth class added to the schedule:ATV Youth Open (Ages 6-15) – Machine qualifi cati ons 51-125cc 4-strokes. This

class is open to CVTs, shift ers and Mods. Rider must be on an age appropriate quad. Riders 7 years and under may ride no larger than a 70cc quad, riders 8 years and older may ride 90cc 2-strokes to 125 4-strokes. Trophy or Dealer Check award.

A few reminders before getti ng to the track:

1. Make sure your number plates are large and clear for the scorers to read

2. Make sure you bring your AMA and D14 cards. If yours has expired you can purchase both at the track.

Let's hope for a fun, fast and safe year! If you have any questi ons, feel free to contact Bob Miller, Larry Seeley or Neil Sutf in, they will be glad to help you out.

See ya'll at the track!

ATV SCENEFREELIN MX (Brown City, MI)

Ready for another outdoor motocross season? We sure are!! Looking forward to an-other great outdoor season, full of fun, fast bikes, famous winning stories, friends, family – FreelinMX. Ole Man Winter was really hard on us these last couple months. Our April 26/27 race, a two day event will host dirtbikes as well as ATVs. Once a season we have the 4-wheelers over to play on the East side. The bikes are excited that spring has arrived and are ready for racing. And, it’s always fun to see the ATVs as they batt le it out in the thumb. For the ATV gang, BOTH days are part of your ATV Michigan State Championship run. So, plan to be with us for the enti re weekend. This weekend is also part of the bike Michigan State Championship series. This Fling should show some fan-tasti c racing.

Our Freelin Frenzy happens June 21/22. The kids will surely enjoy the acti viti es planned both days. Lots of games and prizes and hang out on/in the Giant Slide all weekend. Sunday, June 22, is a Vintage series round. So love to see the vintage guys roll in. Their whole atti tude is one of joy, passion, good fun competi ti on, hard core grass roots moto-cross. The district is very lucky to have such a great group of vintage riders parti cipati ng in the series.

This Mid Michigan Mud Run series event features some of the fastest trucks in the Michi-gan and surrounding states area. With the longest shut-down area in the state, the trucks love to come out to Freelin. Speed is never an issue. You will also fi nd local mud guys who love spending ti me designing and working on their truck to get every last inch of that mud pit.

THE BECKER CHRONICLESby Mark Becker #184, Hare Scramble Chairperson

Fun & Fear in AprilBy now most of you have some seat ti me on your bikes. I know many of you drove south during our bleak winter and indulged in bike porn and debauchery. I myself will be doing my best Ryan Vil-lopoto impersonati on (Toronto SX) with no practi ce. That leads into my latest dia-tribe of nonsense. We do this for fun.

Racing is our passion but it is just a hob-by. So relax and ride within your comfort zone. First rides are like fi rst kisses; you want it but it is scary. So let us take inven-tory of what a typical hare scramble rac-er needs to do at the start of this season.

Safety: embrace it and practi ce it. Buy as much safety gear as your budget will

allow. Think safety as well. This means think before you twist that injury-induc-er (thrott le). Ever get cross-rutt ed on a jump? I have and it gave me a concussion. Go to YouTube under “valleymx2” by dirt mark, about 3 minutes in you can laugh at my stupidity.

Next on my list would be fi tness. This means fl exibility, not just strength. Our bodies are fragile and impacts have a way of aging you faster than biology does. You might think Yoga is for girly-men but torn tendons and ligaments suit head case morons well. Heck, even my dog has enough sense to stretch before acti vity. Cardio is equally important. We race for 3 hours. It sure is sweet aft er a

race to sti ll have energy to load my bike and get changed without asking for help.

Now here’s a touchy subject, diet. There are gobs of fad diets out there all prom-ising results. Here’s my take on these fad diets. Any diet that is low carb is no good. Athletes need carbs. Fad diets are aimed at low acti vity slugs that want to lose weight for their 15 year high school reunion. Does not apply to us. You only need 2 simple items for a successful diet, common sense and discipline. No short cuts. Since I have zero qualifi cati ons on nutriti on, go talk to your doctor. My info comes from the military and it has worked well for me. Your results may vary and steroids not included.

Bike prep. Please don’t show up at your fi rst race with a bike that hasn’t seen a wash since your last ride back in October. I live by this credo, “This is my bike. There are many like it but this one is mine. I will maintain my bike and it will defeat my competi tors. I will.” Actually, I plagiarized that. Can you guess from what? I digress. Take care of your bike and your body. No one else will.

We’ve covered safety, fi tness, and main-tenance. What’s left ? Atti tude. Your state of mind. This is what kills us before the green fl ag ever gets raised. We as rac-ers have to convince ourselves that we can win and have fun. Now by winning I mean no injuries. We all have our own unique defi niti on of “winning”. Mine has always been to fi nish without injury. Per-haps yours is more ambiti ous. Maybe you are the caliber of rider that can win your class or even the overall. If so then super. Assemble an awesome pit crew because you can’t do it by yourself. Pit crews are the most underrated asset we racers have. We don’t give them enough credit. I know I don’t. So I say “THANKS” to the 25 years of pit service I have leeched. Al-low me to end with this one fi nal thought, “In order to be Number 1, you have to be odd.”

Now the boring stuff . Please remember to have your class lett ers on all 3 num-ber plates and the back of your helmet. Numbers 1-10 are reserved for our over-all 3 hour racers. Every rider must have a unique number and team riders must use same number on each bike. If your bike is loud, fi x it. Put an insert in it and leave it in. It will pay off in the end. Our “X” class has returned to it’s original intent of 13-20 years of age for beginners. “R” class is 21+ beginners. Please take the ti me to read our rules located on our web site. As always, call, e-mail, or text me any ques-ti ons or concerns.

ICE RACNG continued from page PB

GasGas motorcycles are not new to the American market, but for a variety of reasons have remained under-represented on the score sheets and trailheads of what represents to most manufacturers their biggest potential market. Recent steps taken by the Spanish company are aimed at improving product quality, increasing performance, raising awareness of the brand and expanding the product line.

Money, Money, MoneyIt’s no secret that the recent (and some would say continuing) recession was particularly brutal in Spain, and as a result vast numbers of Spanish suppliers to the GasGas factory were forced out of business. Scrambling to find and qualify new suppliers left GasGas in a hole, and having to recover from the still-born airbox design intended for the 2012 bikes led to a severe drop bike sales and revenues. Thankfully GasGas attracted the attention of a group of Israeli investors before it died of benign neglect under the care of its then bank-owners, and with a fresh infusion of capital and a renewed focus on good management the business began to be righted.

Technology Baby!Earlier this year I reported that GasGas and OSSA had become a single entity, and while it’s uncertain as to whether the new group will ever sell a version of the fuel-injected/reverse-cylinder Ohlins-suspended enduro bike OSSA showed at Milan a couple years ago, it doesn’t hurt to have that technology in-house. Bolstering the line-up even further is the purchase of the Italian Husky X-Lite four-stroke intellectual property (and also the 125 2T plans). Barring some sort of major disruption, you can expect to see mid-sized 4T Gassers

on American soil in 2015.

Look familiar? These were the best parts of the old Husky, and they’re coming to a GasGas near you

The company is also pursuing the beginning or casual rider as well with bikes like the 250cc liquid-cooled 4T Cami (‘trail’ in Spanish). Designed specifically as a trail bike, the Cami brings two-up capability with a low seat-height and un-intimidating power to the North American market for the first time in 2015. The first sample of the bike has already begun market-acceptance testing.

The company has also focused on refining their bikes and improving their build quality, as is evidenced by the new cylinder castings, new engine cases, redesigned plastic, and worked-over frames on the 2014 bikes (check previous editions of the D14 news for more

details and pictures). The company isn’t beyond looking outside of the typical supply base for solutions either – Reiger was selected as the rear suspension supplier after four very successful years on the trials side of the business.

Focus! The management team at GasGas recognized that increasing brand awareness and getting more bikes under riders would require a significant and direct effort by the company. To that end GasGasMoto North America (www.gasgasmoto.us) on the world-wide interweb) was formed to directly import GasGas off-road bikes to the US market. Industry veteran

Rod Overstreet was selected as the National Sales Manager, and he is supported in no small part by Jim Snell (or TrialspartsUSA fame) and Mark Berg (from GoFasters), as well as a revitalized dealer network. It’s only been a few weeks since this significant structural change was made, but the positive results can already be seen. So while the 2014 bikes represent a further refinement of the latest platform concept, 2014 will be a transitional year from a corporate point of view.

What’s Next? From a racing point of view, the PlusOnePerformance / www.afterhourscycle.com team will continue to support riders and racers at a local and District level, but you can also expect to see factory supported entries in the premier off-road racing series in the US. Hare scrambles racers of the world rejoice! (hint, hint)

On the 2T product front, look for incorporation of some new fueling technologies, whether it be fuel-injection or pressure-compensating carburetors like the APT Smart Carb, and don’t be surprised if the side-of-engine electric starter disappeared, replaced by something decidedly more like what’s found on the Beta. Weight savings will also continue to be pursued.Four-stroke fans should welcome the zesty X-Lite 250 and 310cc engines as a real alternative to the KTM family of mid-size thumpers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – now is a wonderful time to be looking for - and riding - an exotic dirtbike! Be sure to keep your eyes on the revitalized GasGas brand.

GasGas enduro bikes are a near and dear to the hearts of the PlusOnePerformance team. Check us out at www.afterhourscycle.com for OE and aftermarket parts, expert service and suspension tuning, and of course the bikes themselves. And remember … ‘Braaap’ means the same in Spanish as it does in English!

Story and photos sub-mitt ed by Team Freelin and Grace Performance

Kimball, MI – This is the business mission of Grace Performance. Located in Kimball, MI, with easy access off I-69, this dealership has everything and anything you are looking for. The showroom is stocked full of inventory, show-cased for viewing with design, culture and style in mind. This is a life-style – The life of Moto!

Grace Performance was started in 1997 by Mark Grace. For road enthusiasts, most should remember the passion Mark had for the road bike rider. The annual Mark Grace Memorial Ride & Poker Run supports charity and the love of the sport. The ride benefi ts the Justi n L. Evans Memorial Fund, which was founded in 2001 aft er losing 17 year old Justi n to a tragic motorcycle acci-dent. Each year, the fund awards scholarships in Justi n’s memory to help under privileged high school students from the Blue Water Area att end college. Mark Grace had supported the JLEMF since Justi n’s passing. In additi on, a scholarship was dedicated in Mark’s honor at Marine City High School aft er his passing in 2005. Each year the event is a tremendous success with 300+ riders. The ride is enjoyed by all and has raised over $7,000 for the Scholarship Fund. We encourage everyone in the commu-nity to parti cipate and support this wonderful project.

There is a passion here for community, sponsorship and support. The dealership sponsors two local motocross racetracks; FreelinMX (Brown City) and BajaAcres (Millington). Grace Performance supports various chariti es, and parti cipates in as many local fundraisers as possible. They stay involved with both the Wertz Warriors and the Water Warriors, who raise money for The Special Olympics of Michigan. Moto related involve-

The Ted del Solar award is usually announced and deliv-ered at the enduro and hare scramble banquet in Janu-ary. The winner this year, John Spence, was not able to att end the banquet as his son-in-law was being deployed that weekend. Mike Maurer was able to give the award to John aft er a day of working on the trail for the Arbor Day Family Enduro (yes, the snow will melt by the end of April). Congraultati ons John!

Family Enduro Series – March 2014story by Mike MaurerPhotos by CaptureMe-Photography.com

As you read this arti cle our 2014 season may have already started. We did not make a trip to New Paris, IN in March and this event was rescheduled to the historical November date. We will be/are in Roselawn in April in Kalkaska at the end of April for the Arbor Day Enduro. Please make plans to spend the night on Saturday (April 26th) to enjoy the Trout Festi val acti viti es and the tree planti ng event on Sunday morning.

We are pleased to add a new event to the Family Enduro schedule this year. I have already made a preliminary trip to Greenville, Ohio to talk to the Harter family about their fi rst FES event. We dis-cussed their proposed route and made suggesti ons on how FES could help them organize the event. Michigan Off Road Events will be providing the scoring.

This event will start at the Treaty City MC club-grounds. Their clubhouse is very impressive with the history of Treaty City MC and the ability to serve food. Please make sure to mark May 17th on your calendar. A fl yer should be available prior to the Roselawn event.

We will also be returning to Fairview, MI for the Baby Bear Family Enduro. We look forward to working with the newest club to enduro commu-nity – SingleTrack Off Road Events – in early Sep-tember. A FES regular parti cipant will be familiar with our other locati ons, but a few of the dates have changed.

Our list of sponsors will look very similar to last

year – Safety First, Enduro Engineering, Elizabeth Scott Community, Garceau Wenick-Kutz & Ma-gowan Insurnace, Co-Man Industries, CaptureMe Photography, Iott Seed Farms, Delux Trophies and Michigan Off -Road Events. We are working on a couple of new sponsors and we will share that in-formati on when the agreements are fi nalized.

The FES schedule is full with 11 events and we understand that travel costs have not got down recently. Therefore, we will count the best six fi n-ishes to determine the banquet awards.

We had a great turnout to the banquet in Janu-ary (photos below – thanks to Cap-tureMe Photogra-phy). At the end of the night there were a lot of smil-ing faces. The si-lent aucti on was a huge success and the off road com-munity raised over $5,000 for the Randy Good family. Well done friends!!!

We are moving the banquet to the Comfort Inn in Mt. Pleasant. It is very diffi cult to fi nd a banquet facility large enough for our group and able to pro-vide a high level of customer service. If you would like to check out the facility, their website is mtp-comforti nn.com.

The complete FES schedule and event informa-ti on can be found on a couple of websites – www.

d14enduro.org or mid-westenduro.com.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the races.

Aril 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 21

by Steve Beane | March 29, 2014

It turns out that James Stewart is in fact the “fastest man on the planet” … witness his seemingly effortless win at Detroit, the mind-blowing supercross clinic he put on in Toronto, and his “catch and pass” of Ryan Villipoto at St. Louis. Those three wins have allowed Stewart to catch and pass Ricky Carmichael for second place in big-bike supercross wins and notch number 50 at the same time. Nevertheless, it looks like Villipoto will bring home his fourth title – three less than McGrath, and only one less than Carmichael.

Charlie Mullins is on a tear of his own, winning both the Sandlapper and Concho national enduro events to start his season off right. Mullins’ consistency may prove to be the deciding factor in the 10 round series, as only 5 minutes and twenty seconds separated first from tenth place at the Texas round. Round 3 in Tennessee will have occurred by the time this paper hits your doorstep.

The accountants at the Beta factory in Tuscany must be high-fiving like crazy, but the forecasters missed their mark after an incredible surge in popularity of the Italian brand. American Beta has announced that not only are the 250 and 300 Racing Edition stocks limited to what dealers have on the floor, but the 250 and 300RR, and 450 and 498 Racing Editions are likewise sold-out. We’ve been fielding calls and emails from as far away as Washington State and Connecticut on the 250 and 300 Racing Edition bikes we have in stock.

Rumors continue to mount that in 2015 the Husqvarna will be just like a KTM and that the orange brand will unveil a completely new bike. Could this finally be the arrival of the oft-mentioned fuel-injected 2 stroke?

Anybody want to do an over/under on whether or not there will be (a lot of) snow at the Arbor Day Family Enduro? The last report was 36” of snow still remaining in Traverse City. As it was, the first round of the hare scrambles series was postponed until April 6 and the first enduro races were shuffled from the start of the season to November.

There are race bikes, there are Racing Edition bikes, and then there are Factory bikes. This week Beta unveiled a 350cc 4T Factory edition bike, replete with an all-new four-stroke engine, stainless-steel FMF powerbomb exhaust, and those fabulous red-legged Marzocchi forks. Call quickly if you want one …

How about that ice-racing season! No one can complain about the lack of races in District 14, and even Motocross Action got in the act by racing a 3hr endurance event in Wisconsin.

Sherco has started to ship 250 and 300cc 2Ts to go along with their 300cc 4Ts. Trailrider magazine and enduro360.com are just two media outlets to review the French bikes.

If you were holding off ordering a 2014 GasGas because of the Reiger shock, you’re missing out on a great motorcycle with a very well-finished suspension … even if the shock is purple.

It’s possible, but highly unlikely that winter will continue much longer. That means the PlusOnePerformance crew will be back on the tracks and trails that comprise Michigan’s great riding network and the District 14 race series. Catch us there or at afterhourscycle.com

NingXia Nitro’s unique formula of pure essenti al oils and powerful cogniti ve enhanc-ers help support mental acuity and enhances physical performance. These cogniti ve enhancers include not only well-known B vitamins, green tea extract, and ginseng; but they also include a proprietary Nitro Alert™ oil blend consisti ng of vanilla and chocolate oils, yerba mate, spearmint, peppermint, nutmeg, black pepper, wolfb erry seed oil, and ribose.

Ribose is a fi ve-carbon sugar that is naturally produced in every cell and is the back-bone of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a fundamental energy compound that drives nearly all chemical reacti ons in human cells. Although it is a sugar, it is metabolized diff erently than sucrose or glucose and is absorbed instantly into the bloodstream. Unlike other sugars, excess ribose isn’t converted into fat by the body; instead, it is saved for use in ATP energy producti on. This vital diff erence is key to the importance of supplementi ng; and doing so supports cellular energy levels, energy recovery, and energy reserves. It also supports healthy energy levels in the heart and muscles.

By uti lizing Bioenergy Ribose®, Young Living delivers ribose that is: 1. non-GMO; 2. naturally occurring; and 3. Kosher and Halal certi fi ed

If that isn’t enough to convince you of the power of this product, Bioenergy Ribose®

is currently part of the training regimens of many Olympic athletes. These athletes not only undergo extreme physical stress, but they are also limited to natural supple-ments and subjected to extensive testi ng. If ribose can help top athletes support their energy levels, just think of what it can do for you.
