Distributed Acoustics for High-social Value Applications – develop principles and technology for distributed acoustic sensing with focus on applications that provide clear value:

• An Comprehensive Intelligent Acoustic Solution that supports a complete and profound understanding of the sensing system to enable an adequate acoustic acquisition and processing for the specific targeted application;

• Use of Intelligent Acoustics for high-value situational awareness by providing perception of environmental elements with respect to time and/or space and the comprehension of their meaning based on acoustics.

2. Intelligent Acoustic Solutions for large-scale Sensor Networks – Experiment and enhance intelligent acoustic solutions on view of large-scale real-life FIRE sensing environments:

• Explore the combined power of acoustics processing with existing IoT technologies for providing distributed intelligence and acoustic sensing;

• An Intelligent Acoustic Solution for large-scale installations supporting the wide scale of the environments using some approach that performs well for (near-to) real-time execution (e.g. distributed system).

3. Qualified FIRE Acoustic IoT Installations for Applications – Taking FIRE test-beds and qualifying those for acoustic delivery in view of the specific applications targeted by EAR-IT:

• A test-bed qualification scheme which guarantees that an acoustic sensor network installation is adequate and capable for the sensing purpose of the designated application targeted by EAR-IT;

• A set of qualified FIRE test-beds which ensures that EAR-IT experiment runs over a suitable acoustic sensing test-bed for the envisioned applications;

• A benchmarking of test-beds in which one could reproduce / replicate the EAR-IT experiments for alternate environments and different conditions.

4. User- and Market-accepted adoption of EAR-IT research and technologies – user- and market-acceptance for the Intelligent Acoustics Solutions research and technologies of the EAR-IT experiment:

• Research and technologies accepted by users, where users are engaged in a large-scale to perceive and agree with the high social value of the applications versus e.g. acoustic sensing privacy concerns;

• Solutions and technologies accepted by markets, where market conditions for EAR-IT is carefully inspected by engaging the socio-economics of the technologies and solutions.

APPLICATIONS

EAR-IT intelligent acoustic solution provides with an outstanding situational awareness. The features of acoustic mass flows maps provides with awareness to flows of masses using acoustics in a given environment made available as a real-time monitoring of mass flows.

This can be monitoring crowds’ flows (masses of people, not individuals alone) in buildings/cities to create these “acoustic images” of flow patterns of people for [HobNet] supporting Energy Efficiency solutions (e.g. advanced air-conditioning control, energy efficiency scoring, etc.); and [SmartSantander] supporting city operations, e.g. security/emergency planning and grading in public areas of cities. And, the acoustic events detector feature provides with awareness to exceptional situations that take place in the environment. This can detect outstanding (much relevant) events via real-time collection and processing of on-site audio streams for [HobNet] supporting energy efficiency (door and windows closed/opened, air conditioning on/off, etc.) and an indoor warning system for people in situations of emergency (person falling/screaming/in-distress, etc.); and [SmartSantander] e.g. for supporting an outdoor warning system for citizens in situations of emergency (car crash → persons screaming/crying → agglomeration of people in one area, etc. etc.).

Together, they provided with some comprehensive and vast awareness to situations in target environments that can support very interesting and novel applications. EAR-IT will explore their combined use for realising high social value applications of experimenting situational awareness provided by intelligent acoustics.

RESEARCH

There are two main themes subject to S/T research in EAR-IT:

Intelligent Acoustic Solutions on large-scale ‘real-life’ test-beds

A first challenge here is to be able to deal with many different sensing environments by providing with a distributed acoustics service backbone that assures seamless interface to the acoustic sensor network and providing with full knowledge of the sensing conditions, i.e. providing with situational awareness of sensing. Then, a second challenge is about providing with awareness to situations on interest in a target application environment using intelligent acoustics. This entails the ability to map flows of masses (crowds, traffic) and capacity to perceive acoustic events of interest (person fallen, car crash, door/window opening/closing, etc.) using acoustic processing

Qualified FIRE Acoustic IoT Installations for Applications

Taking the selected FIRE test-beds (Hobnet and SmartSantander) and qualifying those for acoustic delivery in view of specific applications targeted by EAR-IT. The challenges are to qualify first the network to assess under which conditions we can get the audio data without “losing the applications”. Secondly once the conditions are known and described, it will be important to provide “benchmarks” in order to ensure qualification of a test bed or particular environment to meet the requirements and therefore ensure reproducibility and reproducibility

Acoustic Tracking (using IoT Motes) demo at IoT-Week 2013 Wednesday, June 19, 2013 EAR-IT performed once again the Acoustic Tracking (using IoT Motes) demonstration now at the 'IoT-Week 2013' in Helsinki from 17-20 June 2013.

The audience was specifically focused on Internet-of-Things and those that saw the demo were very pleased. We heard comments such as: “demo is really performing well”, “nice idea”, “interesting application” or “good work you’ve done here”.

Some people asked about if we were thinking to use such technology underwater. In fact, we had already thought about that, true. And now, that a new FIRE project is dealing with underwater WSN, maybe we will get in contact with them to discuss and see about how to exploit EAR-IT in underwater domains.

Take a look at the video from the demo at: http://www.ear-it.eu/node/76.

PS: By the way, EAR-IT also won a prize at the IoT-Week. You might want to look at: http://www.ear-it.eu/node/73. Publications
