District 59
Continental Europe
It’s all about people
A First Good Step
District 95 is a brand new District. Many challenges will be present-ed, however, you are ready!
Being smaller than the “old” D59 allows the District Core team to focus more on current clubs and geography. Clubs that will be part of D95 are mostly good clubs where Toastmasters International val-ues and standards are applied. These clubs have a wealth of knowledge and a good support system to further help each other improve. District 95 has that “powerful tool” to ensure all clubs do even better.
Situated in Central Europe, including Nordic countries, District 95 has the opportunity to expand beyond its boundaries just as we did last year when we expanded to Romania. If you decide to accept other countries you will be helping others experience the benefits of the Toastmasters Program.
I have worked with many people within the new District 95. I can assure you that they have excellent leaders, good entrepreneurs and, most importantly, wonderful people. The new District Officers whom I present to you in this newsletter are just that – Excellent! Each one has vast experience and knowledge – the fundamentals to be great leaders.
One of the main concerns at the beginning of the new Toastmas-ters year is not getting to know/meet the new District Officers. As outgoing District Governor, I wish to safeguard against this… I thus present the great Team that will lead District 95 from 1 July 2014 onwards.
I wish all of you much fun and success!
Good Luck, District 95.

João de Mendonça
District Governor 2013-14
D59 Continental Europe
DISTRICT GOVERNOR
Experience:
He joined Toastmasters in April 2000 in New Zealand and took on the role of VP Education in 2001.
He has held officer roles ever since. In 2008 he was a finalist in the District International Speech
Contest.
On the leadership front, he stepped up to District level in 2011 as a Division Governor and in 2012
as Lt. Governor Marketing for which he received the Excellence in Marketing Award from Toast-
masters International, for helping to guide the District to President Distinguished status and No.1 in
the world. In 2013-2014, he was elected Lt. Governor Education and Training.
He is a ACG and ALB and has completed all the requirements for the ALS, except for the HPL. He
is working on this project at the moment and hopes to reach DTM status before the Fall Conference
2014. He has been a trainer/facilitator at countless Officer Training and ordinary educational ses-
sions
In 2005-2006 he took a break from Toastmasters to travel around the world non-stop for a year, vis-
iting over 25 countries in four continents. This trip of a lifetime has given him a very humble feeling
about the human race and opened up his heart to listen to others regardless of their culture. This
experience has helped him greatly in carrying out his many different roles within the Toastmasters
environment.
Goals
“Help fellow Toastmasters discover the richness
inside themselves in the field of communication
and leadership and share this richness with fellow
Toastmasters so as to help each one make pro-
gress, no matter how small the steps are. .
Say what you mean, mean what you say. Apply
transparency. Forge a team. Discuss a vision for
the next five years.”
Kees Broos

He was hooked, became enthusiastic and was elected President of Hanseredner.
“As a member of an English speaking club and German speaking club, I want to maintain the friendly atmosphere in both, help members to get to know each other better and encourage them to hold joint events with clubs from the other language.”

Every time Toastmasters has presented him with a new opportunity to

From a regular member presenting seeches and competing in Division
contests to being VPM and VPE at two different clubs, as well a co-
ach at another club, he finally reached the position of Division D Go-

Goals for 2014-15
“There are two goals I would like to pursue this year in our Division
and both of them will be quite challenging:
1) to make sure there is always VALUE in workshops, training and
conferences that we provide to our members. It might seem like an
obvious thing, but from my experience the reality is far from this goal.
2) to grow rapidly in number of clubs - it is time we spread the To-
astmasters concept to corporations in our Division and thanks to the
Brno Corporate Summit we might have the recipe on how to accom-
plish this.
If we succeed in reaching both of these goals, Division D will be one

“My goals are:
1) Achieve ACS, ALB and ALS;
2) Get 20 members to launch speakers loft club which is currently prospective;
3) Advancing the clubs in my area to get more experienced speakers (more than CC).”
Peter Smith
He is a Toastmasters since 2008 and has reached ACB and CL level. He was Club President of Esprit de Corps in 2009-10 and Area Governor in 2013-14. He was a contestant in the 2010 and 2012 District 59 Humorous Speech Contest.
“The overall goal is to strengthen the clubs in my Area.”
Martin Sturm
Toastmasters has given him the key to develop as a human being and as a professional. He works with clients, and he applies what he has learnt at Toastmasters on a daily basis. He used to be rather shy and insecure when among people; today, he can truly say that he feels very much at ease, has more fun, and is more spontaneous. His club officer positions as VPE and President of Mannheim Int'l Toastmasters Club showed him he had the ability to motivate his team, be a part of something bigger than himself, and also increased self-confidence.
“My goals are: (1) Continue to support the Clubs in the Area and help them gain their respecti-ve DCP awards; (2) Help with the transition to the new District 95; (3) Organise Area Contests and jump in if help is needed for the Division Contests; (4) be available answer all questions members might have; (5) help to promote the Revitalized Education Program.”
Alan Heaton
