Lindner Center Insertion

As a small group of 4 we were assigned a building to study, measure and model to scale. My group was given the Lindner Center as our building. Lindner Center is located on the University of Cincinnati’s campus and houses the world’s longest freestanding staircase. The model was set at quarter scale and was constructed using chipboard and basswood. The final model was carefully built and put together by the four of us and it became a massive structure.

Lindner Center Insertion

After the quarter scale model was built we each had to design our own insertion into the building. With the building having the world’s largest freestanding staircase I wanted to find a way to juxtapose it. My idea was to create a nonlinear staircase by the entrance that blends in to the original staircase at the end. There are four staircases that occupy the empty atrium at the entrance of the building. The stairs are the same dimension as the original staircase but wider and at an angle. These stairs are able to rotate and have a flush connection with the top of the next staircase.

Conceptual Athenaeum

In Fall semester of 2015 our final project was an athenaeum. An athenaeum is a place of learning and gathering of the community. I based my design on different styles of roofs that were rotated on their sides and morphed together, This was the first 3D print that I had ever done and I wanted to make something that would be extremely difficult by hand. The original precedent of the building was for high-tech learning and gaming.

7 Walls Project

During this project I had to figure out what a wall was. I decided to take a different view on this and take the traditional vertical wall and make it horizontal. With stacking these walls it created a graded area with its own types of walls. My main focus was to stack layers and create a well-circulated, occupiable space with a constant grade. I have always liked the idea of a large staircase that can be used to walk on or sit on. This space does just that.

Case Study 19-20

Kimbell Art Museum Case Study

In the Fall of 2015 We were asked to do a quick study on an existing building. In this study I conducted research and created a Rhino model of the Kimbell Art Museum by Louis Kahn for its use in diagramming.

Study Wall Section

We were asked to create a diagram of a wall section as a study for class. I created an MDF base with the footing cut out, place wooden studs in the footing and then poured plaster into the base. Once the wall studs were in place I had a good foundation to build on.The wall creates interesting shadows and also reveals all of it’s structure.

Graphic Design

My main focus for the last two years has been on learning how to use the adobe creative cloud in my free time. I have found interest in digital collage and digital painting using photographs that I have taken and other stock images. Digital art has helped me learn how to abstract the real world and put it into my own perspective. I work on my skills everyday and try a wide range of techniques to find out what works best for me. My goal is to master Photoshop and be able to make flawless images.

3D Printing

While I was at my first Co-op with BHDP Architecture in Cincinnati, Ohio I became dedicated to researching 3D printing for the firm to further invest. I have just started my passion for 3D printing and have purchased my own FDM printer. The images of the building were Modeled in Rhino and printed on a SLA resin printer. I was in charge of making the model and getting it printed. The Image In the top right and on the back was my first Rhino/Grasshopper/3D Print. I used my FDM Printer to create this curved truss system.
