HOSPITAL chiefs moved toreassure anxious Christchurchresidents and community leadersabout the future of Christchurchhospital at a meeting on Mondaynight.

Chief executive of Bournemouthand Christchurch HospitalsTrust, Tony Spotswood, andmedical director Dr Mary Armit-age, chaired a public meeting atChristchurch council on theirlatest consultation document.

The annual plan while outliningproposals for the whole hospitalover the next year also providesdetails of how Christchurchhospital might be

utilised.A 6,000-name petition set up by

resident Sue Ellis was handed toMr Spotswood to demonstrate thestrength of support for thethreatened hospital from the localcommunity.

She told the packed meeting, which included many boroughand county councillors andChristchurch MP Chris Chope, that the hefty stack of signatureshad been compiled in just threeweeks.

“Please do not underestimatethe strength of feeling. People justcame up to us in Sainsbury’s onFriday when we were there withthe petition and wanted to signbecause it is important to them”,she said.

“They are very concerned thattheir hospital will just be left halfempty and then closed because itisn’t possible to run a half emptysite.”

Other concerns focused uponhow the site would be used, themulti-million pound savings thatneeded to be made, the parkingsituation at BournemouthHospital as well as the position of

Dorset Primary Care Trust insupporting the outlinedproposals.

Mr Spotswood issued a veryclear message to residents thatplans for the hospital did notinclude closure.

After investing £1 million in thefacility over the past two years,he said this should give anindication of their commitment to

the site.He added: “There are no plans

to close Christchurch hospital. That is not our intention. Whatwe are trying to do is look at whatto do with the site going forward.

“It is really important that weare looking at how we use the sitepositively.”

The consultation ends on April23.

Cash for Schools

Corporate responsibility is increasingly at the heart of our business. It is about how we conduct business; how we choose to be profi table and not just how we make our social investment. The best businesses in the world recognise the imperative to behave responsibly.

Our community investment programme is a crucial part of the way we fulfi l our responsibilities as a business.

In the UK our priority is to support local charities and voluntary sector organisations that are able to involve our employees in their work. The ‘Cash for Schools Initiative’ is a fantastic way of supporting the local community and education and particularly for Barclays helping raise the awareness and the importance of fi nancial literacy.

Lance King, Barclays area director for retail banking in Dorset, said: “Investing in the community is an important part of Barclays

sustainability strategy and this competition embraces every element of our community giving programme.

We aim to give every school in the Dorset area the opportunity to bid for some much needed funds to make a real and lasting difference to their school and pupils.

Winners will be able spend the cash on whatever projects they choose whether it be fi nancial literacy, creating and developing a sensory garden, replenish sports equipment or buy new books for libraries, just some great examples of how Barclays in conjunction with The Daily Echo hope to reach out in the community and benefi t local school children living in the Dorset area.”

Rules * All normal Daily Echo rules apply, available on request. Barclays has a community investment exclusions policy, which identifi es types of initiatives and causes that we do not fund. The data will only be used for the administration of this campaign and will not be passed on to any third parties.
