Smart Cities: First 20 tobe announced today

NEW DELHI, Jan 27:

The first 20 cities to bedeveloped as Smart Cities willbe announced tomorrow, UrbanDevelopment Minister MVenkaiah Naidu said today.

There are 97 cities in theSmart City Challenge, and thenames of the first 20 winners ofthe competition will beannounced tomorrow, Naidusaid.

These cities will be devel-oped to have basic infrastructurethrough assured water and powersupply, sanitation and solidwaste management, efficienturban mobility and public trans-port, IT connectivity, e-gover-nance and citizen participation.

Naidu was addressing about100 senior officers of Army,Navy, Air Force and civil serv-ice, including 25 foreign offi-cials, participating in a course on'National Security and StrategicStudies' at the National DefenceCollege here.

In the subsequent years, theGovernment will announce 40cities each to be developed asSmart Cities as per PrimeMinister Narendra Modi's planto develop 100 Smart Cities inthe country.

Speaking on challenges andthe way ahead for urban devel-opment, Naidu said perpetuation

of inequities in urban areas hasserious implications for nationalsecurity and hence, theGovernment is committed toensuring inclusive developmentunder new initiatives like AtalMission for Rejuvenation andUrban Transformation(AMRUT), Smart City Mission,Swachh Bharat and PradhanMantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

Naidu stressed on the needfor inclusive urban development,noting that "it was the need ofthe hour with 'Young India'becoming more and more aspira-tional".

He expressed concernregarding the exploitation ofurban spaces by the well-to-dosections of the society at the costof the poor and the marginalisedand stressed on inclusivity whiletaking decisions related to urbangovernance.

Emphasising on the need forsustainable urban development,Naidu said, "Cities should bewater positive through water har-vesting, recycling and reuse ofwater, energy positive with eachhousehold resorting to renewablesources of energy, and communi-ty positive facilitating interactiveneighbourhoods."(PTI)
