New Facilities Construction Continues

New Library , Krannert Head List • • .

By SALLY WAGNER Daily lllini Staff Writer In the past construction on campus has been directed towards housing ,

with the recent construction of Illinois Street Residence , the Florida and Pennsylvania Residences . But the more recent

projects have been educational facilities , thus expanding the University s resources as well . The new undergraduate

library will provide an extension of undergraduate study areas and stacks . The underground library , a $ 4 . 5 million

project , is slated for completion in September 1968 . The project is somewhat behind , how

ever , because of bad weather conditions requiring the contractor , McCarthy - Hathman Construction Co ., to spend extra

time pumping the water out of the hole . The upper level of the two-story building will house the card catalog , the

reference and periodical collection , a browsing collection , part of the general book collection , staff offices and a

listening center . The latter consists of a control room and 106 listening stations designed to make available to students

audio materials of all kinds as required to supplement course lectures or for recreational purposes . A microfilm reader

room accommodating 30 flanks the control room , separated from it in part by glass panels for visual supervision . The

lower level will house the major part of the general book collection , as well as the reserve books , and provides 18 typing

carrels . Copying machines will be available on both levels .

The surface area will be an attractively landscaped and lighted plaza providing bench-type seating for those who wish to

read outside in fair weather , and the central court is designed to serve a similar purpose . The two pavilions not only

provide cover for the stairways , elevators , dumbwaiter and certain needs of the mechanical system , but are designed to

heighten the esthetic effect of the plaza treatment . Ground recently has been broken for the $ 5 . 5 million project of the

psychology building , scheduled for completion in August 1969 . An

eight-story building , it will provide laboratory and classroom facilities . Half the space on each floor will be devoted to

teaching and research laboratories and the other half devoted to research laboratories . The Krannert . Center for the

Performing Arts , to be used to expand facilities for drama , the choruses , orchestras and bands of the UI , will be

completed in the early fall of 1968 . The $ 18 . 4 million center is the first facility to be built for the performing arts since

the Band Building was completeed in 1915 . The press box will be a $ 550 , 000 addition to Memorial Stadium , with

seating capacity for 330 persons from all the news media . Architect for the project is Holabird & Associates , Chicago ,

who also designed the Stadium .

Target date for the press box originally was set for Aug . 18 , 1967 , but had to be moved up to Sept . 15 , 1967 , because

of a steelworkers strike . It is likely the box will not be completeed on the Sept . 15 date because of a cement finishers

strike which has delayed all construction at least two weeks . The newly completed Materials Research Laboratory has

been occupied . Funding was received from the Atomic Energy Commission , Advanced Planning Research Agency and

UI Foundation grants . It is to be used as research facilities for graduates and faculty in physics , electrical engineering ,

metals , ceramics and chemical engineering . - Research is on solid materials in relation to atomic energy — how

these materials react . The lab will be directly connected to the atomic reactor . To protect workers from radioactivity the

building provides a 2-foot concrete and lead shielding . Part of the new Coordinated Sciences Building is occupied . This

$ 1 . 1 million project received its funds from the National Aeronautical Space Administration and University funds .

Completion date was scheduled for Aug . 1 , 1967 . The Civil Engineering Building also is substantially complete . This $

3 million project will provide additional research facilities and office space for the engineering department . Funding

came from the National Science Foundation , National Institute of Health and the Illinois Building Authority .

Much of the construction on campus depends on appropriations from the state . If enough of the requested appropriations

are granted we can look to a future of even more construction on the everexpanding campus .

Ul To Finish Construction

Of Four Campus Prefects • • •

By LEITH ADAMS Daily Illini Staff Writer Four campus projects now are under construction and are expected to reach

completion within the next two years . Most noticeable is the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts which will cover

two blocks and is scheduled to be completed by August 1968 . Construction on the project was ! relayed briefly this

summer when union members struck following an accident which injured three men . Workers returned to their jobs soon

, and union officials reported they have settled differences with the company and consider the incident closed . The center

will be an educational facility for students in the performing arts and will be composed of four separate auditoriums . A

concert hall will seat 2 , 220 , a drama auditorium 700 , a music auditorium 1 , 000 and an experimental theater 250 . In

addition , an outside seating capacity of 1 , 200 will be made available by the arrangement

of the buildings . Includes Underground Parking The center also will provide rehearsal areas for choruses , opera and

dramatic groups , two floors of classrooms , offices , workshops and parking space for 650 cars . The parking area also

will serve as faculty-staff underground parking . The actual project cost is $ 13 . 4 million , with five contracts awarded

for acoustics , mechanical equipment , heating , stage equipment and stage lighting . An additional $ 5 million was paid

for land and for utility extension such as steam , water and electricity . More than half of the $ 18 . 4 million was donated

by Mr . and Mrs . Herman C . Krannert of Indianaor olis who also contributed a . sizeable amout to the Krannert Art

Center . • - ¦ - - ¦ .. > The new undergraduate library is being built between the Library and Morrow Plots and is

expected to be completed by Sept . 15 , 1968 . The unusual aspect of this twostory building is that it will be built

completely underground . This underground structure was planned

so the open appearance of a major north-south mall would be kept and to prevent shading of the Morrow Plots , which

have provided valuable agricultural research data continuously since 1876 . Provision for future additions is made both on

the north and the south . The library will consist of two floors approximately 217 feet by 241 feet with a 72-foot square

central court . Seating will be provided for 1905 persons and shelving for 125 , 000 volumes , including approximately 10

, 000 reserve books . I The upper level will house the

card catalog , the reference and periodical collection , a browsing collection , part of the general book collection , staff

offices and a listening center . The listening center will consist of a control room and 106 listening stations designed to

make available to students audio materials of all kinds as required to supplement course lectures or for recreational

purposes . A microfilm reader room accommodating 30 will flank the control room , separated in part by glass panels for

visual supervision . The major part of the general

book collection will be housed , as on the lower level , as well as the reserve books . There also will be four separate

rooms on this level which can be used by the blind and their readers . Copying machines will be available on both levels .

Some of the electrical features of the library will include a public address system to be used for paging in case of

emergency , a chime system instead of the usual bell system for classes , fire alarm and smoke detection systems , and

strategically placed house phones for

the convenience of students seeking help from a staff member if one is not in the area . An amazing fact is that even

before being constructed . the building has won an award . On the basis of the architect s plans and model the library was

given a first honor award last summer in a program conducted by the Department of Health , Education and Welfare in

joint sponsorship with the American Institute of Architects . On the corner of Sixth and Dan

iel Streets , Champaign , an eight * story psychology building is being constructed . This air conditioned building will

house laboratories , departmental of f ices and 10 classrooms . The classrooms will be situated on the ground floor which

will extend beyond the north face of the building under a terrace . This terrace will contain trees and outdoor benches for

use during fair weather .
