2 Carrington Moss: This large area of peat bog was reclaimed in the 19th century to meet Manchester’s increasing farming and waste disposal requirements. It is one of the last remaining strongholds in Greater Manchester for corn bunting.

3 Altrincham Wastewater Treatment Works Pond: The pond attracts many wildfowl and waders in winter and on passage, including shoveler, ruddy duck, wheatear and yellow wagtail. The wildfowl can be admired swimming among the reeds and bulrushes, from the site boundary. Willow tits have been recorded nearby.

4 Firs Wood: This small mature woodland provides excellent habitat for woodland birds. It offers access to Carrington Moss and a vast network of paths and tracks, including the Trans Pennine Trail.

Suitable for off-road cyclists. Limited access for wheelchairs and prams.

WALK desCriPtIOnThis circular route explores Carrington Moss and the Trans Pennine Trail. Enjoy walking through Trafford’s Millennium Woodland and onto one of the nation’s most renowned long distance trails. Take a moment to gaze over rich open fields before continuing along the Trans Pennine Trail (west), past mature silver birch trees and grazing horses. The return loop guides people along Woodhouse Lane and Firsway towards The Brigadier pub. Walkers are encouraged to enter the woodland opposite and rejoin the Trans Pennine Trail (east) to complete the walk at Dainewell Park.

aCcESSIBILItYPaths are surfaced in areas but soft underfoot elsewhere. Some may become muddy after heavy rainfall.
