The International Association of Lions Clubs started as a dream in the mind of a young Chicago Insurance Agent - MELVIN JONES. That dream was the consolidation of several independent clubs already in existence in to one strong influential unit for Service to Humanity, and was presented to leaders of various independent groups at a meeting in Chicago Illinois on June 7th 1917. From that meeting came a call for the Association's Annual Convention held on October 8th-10th 1917 in Dallas Texas, with twenty-three clubs participating.

Thus was conceived and founded the world's largest, most active and most representative service club organisation.

Lions believe in Club meetings where good fellowship and harmony prevail, in developing projects and activities geared to needs of their communities, by participating in an International programme of brotherhood and fellowship, based upon Service wherever a need exists, without personal reward - in Service to humanity without thought to race, creed, nationality, religion, or politics - in the ultimate leadership of Lionism, but not at the expense of or in conflict with programmes of other organisations using different methods to seek the same goal of Unselfish Service to Mankind.

HISTORY OF LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL

1917 The Association was Founded in Chicago Illinois, USA on June 7th by Insurance Agent Melvin Jones.

1920 The Association became International with formation of a first Lions club in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

1945 The Association assisted in framing non-Government Sections of the United Nations Charter, with continued UN support.

1947 A First Club in Australia was formed at Lismore on July 1st, largely through the efforts of William Tresise.

1948 First European Club was chartered at Stockholm Sweden, then 1953 saw the first Clubs in Asia and Africa chartered.

1959 The Lions Club of Dalby was formed on 14th February 1959 and received its Charter on 7th April 1959.

1987 Lions became the first International Service Organisation to admit Female Members.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION of LIONS CLUBS

OFFICIAL NAME:

Official name of the Association is The International Association of Lions Clubs, or put simply Lions Clubs International.

MOTTO:

After being selected out of more than six thousand suggestions from members worldwide, the Lions motto of WE SERVE was adopted at the 1954 International Convention.

SLOGAN:

Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safety - was adopted at the International Convention in 1919.

OFFICIAL COLOURS:Purple and Gold were chosen when the association was founded in 1917. Purple represents loyalty to country, friends, to one's self and to the integrity of mind and heart. It is the colour of strength, courage and dedication to a cause. Gold symbolises sincerity of purpose, liberality in judgement, purity in life and generosity in mind, heart and commitment to mankind.

OFFICIAL EMBLEM:Lions worldwide are recognised by the Lion emblem logo which became our official emblem on December 31st 1921 and consists of the gold letter L on a circular purple or blue field. Bordering this is a circular gold area with two Lion profiles facing the past and future - showing both a pride of heritage and confidence in the future. The word LIONS appears at the top and INTERNATIONAL at the bottom. The emblem appears on lapels of men and women of all classes, colour and creeds, on every continent and in every Nation. From leaders of nations to leaders of industry and to community leaders, this simple badge bridges all for it knows no boundaries.

Lions - wear your badge with the pride it deserves. It means that you are an honoured member of a world fellowship which has joined hands and hearts in the service of humanity. By wearing this simple badge YOU are charged with the care of humanity -

To put something into life rather than taking something from it.

MISSION STATEMENT:To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs, by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP AND UNDERSTANDING:It may appear that the language barrier could make this almost impossible, however International Understanding and Friendship is a matter of spirit rather than of language. Lions throughout the world communicate with one another through club activities that create and foster a spirit of understanding between peoples of the world and share fellowship through the pin of service that we all wear.

STRUCTURE OF THE ASSOCIATION

The International Association of Lions Clubs is an incorporated, non-profit organisation. The International Board of Directors, elected by official delegates in secret ballot at the International Convention is composed of an International President, Immediate Past President, first and second Vice-Presidents and Directors from various countries of the world.

The individual Lions Club is a most important unit of your association. As an individual you belong to a club and it is the club that belongs to the Association. This means that when it comes time to elect International Officers and Directors, or to amend or change the International Constitution and By-laws it is the club that casts the necessary votes through its authorised delegates.

Every Lions Club in good standing is entitled to at least one delegate or alternate to vote at the International Convention. Most clubs however are entitled to more than one vote, since the constitution provides for one delegate and one alternate for each twenty-five members or greater fraction thereof. Delegates and Alternates are elected by the club membership and at all Lion conventions they elect officers who will act for them during the fiscal year - July 1st to June 30th.

LIONS CODE OF ETHICS

TO SHOW faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

The principal word here is REPUTATION : In a career, occupation or calling, to gain exemplary status for excellence of service - OR If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well.

TO SEEK success and demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken, or because of questionable acts on my part.

MORAL GAIN : Everyone has the right to fair pay or profit, but it must come honestly and not at the cost of dignity or standard of conduct, or by unethical means. Success and profit, but not at "all" costs.

TO REMEMBER that in building up my own business it is not necessary to tear down another's, to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. Here we have a DUTY OF HONOUR : To gain success in a business or profession, but not at the cost of another. To be loyal and true in business and to myself.

WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action toward others to resolve such doubt against myself.Be VIRTUOUS: and remember the proverb - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP : The value of true friendship is unconditional, complete and not to be broken.

ALWAYS bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and means.

CIVIC DUTY : No one has the right to say "Let somebody else do it for me". Each person belongs to or is a part of a community. If something is expected of that community, then it is up that person to give to the community. There is no such thing as a conscientious objector when it comes to civic duties. That is in repayment for our right to be a part of the community.

TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak and my substance to the needy.COMPASSION : I shall pass this way but once. Any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise, to build up and not destroy.MORAL DIPLOMACY : "Judge not, that ye be not judged.." Praise in public, censure in private. For all the good in the best of us, For all the bad in the worst of us, It ill behoves any one of us, To find fault with the rest of us.

INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS located in Oak Brook, Illinois USA serves as the Association's central administrative and information source with a staff of approximately two hundred and seventy full time professional staff members.

Eleven operating divisions divide the administrative responsibilities at International Headquarters - Club Supplies and Distribution, Convention, District and Club Administration, Extension and Membership, Finance, Information Technology, Service Activities, Leadership, Legal, Lions Clubs International Foundation, Public Relations and Communication.

MULTIPLE DISTRICT 201 AUSTRALIA As a district becomes too large it is sub-divided along national, state or provincial boundaries to form two or more sub-districts. Each sub-district is identified by it's own letter and / or number. When there is more than one sub-district in a defined area, these districts form a Multiple District.Australia consists of nineteen such sub-districts, whilst OUR District is named 201 Q3.

In area our Multiple District of Australia is the second largest in the world, next to Brazil.

Each Multiple District has its own constitution based on the Standard Form of Constitution as provided by Lions Clubs International. These constitutions may be amended by a vote of delegates to the Multiple District Convention, provided that they do not conflict with provisions of the International Constitution or International Board Policies.

Each District has its own Executive Officer - The DISTRICT GOVERNOR - elected at the annual convention of the District and directly responsible to the International Board. Governors of sub-districts together form a COUNCIL of GOVERNORS, which has the responsibility to administer all Multiple District affairs and may choose officers, hold meetings, administer funds and authorise expenditures as provided in the Multiple District Constitution and By-laws. The District Governors use this council as a forum for mutual understanding and co-operation. The chairman - an Immediate Past District Governor is selected by Governors elect at their first meeting.

MULTIPLE DISTRICT 201 COUNCIL comprises :

The Executive : NINETEEN DISTRICT GOVERNORS and a COUNCIL CHAIRMAN. EXECUTIVE OFFICER, LEGAL OFFICER and TREASURER.

The Multiple District Council meet three times during the Lions year, generally twice in Sydney and once at an International or Multiple District Convention venue.

These meetings determine policy, consider national projects and events, receive reports from the national committee managers and deal with any business arising from district and multiple district conventions.

NATIONAL OFFICE The executive officer and staff of six manage the national office situated in Newcastle, New South Wales. All Club Supplies, Directories, Lion Magazines, Mints, Cakes and Administration Matters are coordinated through this office.

AT DISTRICT LEVEL Within Australia Lions Clubs form part of a district, which constitutionally comprises a minimum of thirty-five clubs with a combined total of twelve hundred and fifty members or more.

Our Q3 District consisting of seventy-one Lion Clubs, fifteen Lioness Clubs and eleven Leo Clubs encompasses an area bounded by - Ipswich, Clifton, Millmerran, Cunnamulla, Quilpie, Charleville, Roma, Taroom, Jandowae, Kilcoy, Maleny, Caloundra and greater Brisbane area north of the Brisbane River.

District Governor: The District Governor serves as chief administrative officer of the district. At the district convention he or she is elected to serve a one-year term and assumes office at closure of the International convention. The District Governor's responsibilities include representing the association in our district, supervising district officers, representing district on the Council of Governors, supervising the organisation of new Lion clubs and presiding over district meetings. The District Governor, or the 1st or 2nd Vice District Governor, will generally visit each club of the district at least once during the District Governor’s term of office between July and December.

To assist in these endeavours a number of assistants are elected or appointed, each with a specific responsibility and many with specialist roles. They are called DISTRICT OFFICERS and form the DISTRICT CABINET. This cabinet is the deliberative and assisting body to the District Governor in the formulation of administrative plans and policies affecting welfare of Lion clubs within the district and serves in an advisory and administrative capacity only.

Vice District Governors: Two Vice District Governors serve as chief administrative assistants to the Governor. Specific responsibilities include becoming familiar with the duties of Governor and to perform those duties during the Governors absence.Vice Governors also participate in district meetings, supervise district committees at request of the Governor and may serve as chairmen of the district Membership, Extension, Retention and Leadership teams.

Cabinet Secretary: The cabinet (or District) secretary is elected at a special general meeting of the district to assist with day-to-day district administration. Tasks include keeping records of membership, status of clubs, collating information on each club's activities from their monthly reports, also handling district correspondence plus numerous other administrative and recording duties.

Cabinet Treasurer: The cabinet (or District) treasurer in conjunction with a Finance Committee prepares district budgets for Administrative and Activity expenditures for the fiscal year, manages all accounting and financial matters and maintains the district books of account with an annual audit to comply with the district constitution.

Region Chairmen (or Area Managers) : Region chairmen (if appointed) supervise zone chairmen and district committees and assist clubs with membership, extension and district projects of Youth of the Year judging and inter-club meetings.

Zone Chairmen: The district is apportioned by the District Governor into Zones, each with a Zone Chairman who is chairman of the Advisory Committee of that Zone. The President, Secretary and Membership Chairmen of all Lions Clubs within each zone, by virtue of their respective offices constitute with the zone chairman - A District Governor's Advisory Committee - the most important link that members and clubs have with the organisation. Reports from clubs and zone chairmen are presented to the District Governor and to District Cabinet.

Zone Chairmen are usually appointed from immediate past club presidents who have demonstrated leadership and have a desire to become more involved. They are required to visit clubs of their zone and provide assistance on all Lion matters. As members of district cabinet they are required to chair regular zone meetings of the district governor's advisory committee.

District Chairmen comprise the balance of a district cabinet and are appointed by the district governor to supervise and maintain multiple district, district and club projects, with assistance from region and zone chairmen. The number of district chairmen is dependent on various activities and projects carried out in the district. These officers may be called upon as guest speakers at club meetings and to assist with various club activities.

How does one become a District Officer?District Officers generally are members well versed in Lionism and selected by the District Governor to help administer the district and assist clubs to become more effective. So to become a District Officer one must gain experience and offer service primarily at club level, usually serving as club President or Secretary before being asked to serve at district level.

The district Q3 cabinet chart below shows how various officers interact and complement business of the district and its clubs.

There are two general classification of club committees - Administrative and Activity based. The chairmen of each committee will call periodic meetings to plan and coordinate club functions and projects. They are supervised by club directors and may often attend board meetings to report progress and make recommendations.

New members will be appointed to various committees according to their interest and talent. This ensures their involvement in club projects, activities and programs whilst bringing new ideas to the club. Committee meetings may be held before or after regular business meetings or on other occasions at club meeting rooms or members’ home.

CLUB OFFICER ROLES

A Lions Club is governed by a Board of Directors, normally consisting of a president as its chief executive officer, immediate past president, two vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, Lion tamer, tail twister, four or more directors, bulletin editor and a membership director. Officers are elected annually with exception of those directors who are elected for a two year term. The process begins with nominations of club officers and directors in March. The president appoints a nominations committee to interview prospective candidates for club office, however club members have the final say as nominations are made from the floor.

Elections are held annually in April and the successful candidates’ term of office commences on July 1st. Meetings of the board are usually held once per month, but their actions must be ratified by the full membership.

President: As club Chief Executive Officer the President presides at all meetings of the club and board of directors, issues a call for regular and special meetings in accordance with the club Constitution and By-Laws or procedures, plans the agenda and ensures that the status of each committee activity is reported. It is also the president's responsibility to ensure that regular elections are duly called, noticed and held. The President is an active member of the District Governor's advisory committee of the Zone.

Immediate Past President: The immediate past President assists and offers guidance to the current President. Along with other past Presidents they serve as official greeters of members and their guests at club meetings and represent the club in welcoming new people to the community.

Vice-Presidents: Should a president be unable to perform duties of office, the vice-President next in rank occupies the position to perform such duties with same authority as the president. Each vice-President under direction of the president oversees the functioning of various club committees.

Secretary: Under supervision and direction of the President and Board of Directors, the Secretary acts as a liaison officer between the club, district and International headquarters. Responsibilities include submitting reports and maintaining club records.

Treasurer: The treasurer is responsible for all club financial matters. Duties include receiving all monies and settling club obligations, maintaining financial records, preparing financial statements and submitting regular financial reports.

Lion Tamer: The Lion Tamer serves as custodian of all club property, serving as sergeant-at-arms and distributing materials at meetings.

Tail Twister: The Tail Twister serves to promote harmony, good fellowship and enthusiasm at club meetings through judicious imposition of fines on members and with games and stunts to make meetings more enjoyable.

Membership Director: Responsibilities of the membership director include development of a membership growth program, recruitment and retention strategies, plus the preparation and conduct of orientation sessions for new members.

LION MEMBERSHIP

Lion members are men and women dedicated to serving, whether in their own community or around the world. Membership provides an opportunity to meet and work with other individuals in a sprit of fellowship, whilst striving toward a common goal of helping those in need. Through their mutual concern for others, members have an opportunity to improve both their local and world communities and develop valuable personal and professional skills. Members are expected to give freely of their time and energy whenever possible. They are expected to attend club meetings regularly, be available for committee assignments, be knowledgeable about the Aims and Purposes of Lions and support their club officers.

New members are the lifeblood of every club. Equally important as lending a hand to club service activities is participating in the growth of your Lions club. Someone offered you the privilege of serving your fellow man and it is your responsibility to share that privilege. Recruiting new members to your club ensures a continual influx of enthusiastic members to share the load of serving those in need.

No Lion may benefit financially from their membership in a Lions Club. There are however many personal rewards from membership in a well-managed Lion, Lioness or Leo Club. You become part of a close knit group of like-minded citizens who enjoy fellowship and have opportunities to learn leadership skills, make friends all over the country and gain satisfaction of accomplishing humanitarian assistance to the needy that could not be achieved as an individual. Your lapel badge can open many doors whilst travelling anywhere in Australia or overseas. Fellow Lion family members are willing to assist in times of need or can welcome you into their homes or to club meetings. Many long-term personal relationships between strangers have started simply because we share the affinity of our badge of service.

No club can be complacent about membership, for a continual flow of new members is necessary to replace the inevitable transfer losses, increased business commitments, ill health, retirement or demise -To spread the work load over a larger group -To bring fresh enthusiasm, new ideas, new talents and new friends -To guard against stagnation or getting caught in a rut -To keep the club active and growing with younger members to take over -To enable the club to keep pace with growing community needs -To provide and train future office bearers for the club and district and -To give more citizens an opportunity to share in Fellowship and Service.

Membership of a Lions Club is by invitation only, even in the case of transfer members - with age of legal majority and being of good moral character and reputation in the community. It is important that members are compatible, but this does not mean that members must all come from the same economic or ethnic background. It does mean however that all members must be able to mix together and afford the time and cost of membership. Any Lion is entitled to nominate a prospective member to their club or to another club, subject to the prescribed procedure, investigation and approval.

CLASSES of LION MEMBERSHIP

ACTIVE - An Active member is entitled to all rights and privileges, including eligibility to seek any office in the club, district or International Association and a right to vote on all matters. Obligations shall include regular attendance, prompt payment of dues, participation in club activities and conduct reflecting a favourable image of a Lions club in the community.

HONORARY - Honorary Membership may be granted to a non-member whom the club desires to confer special distinction, after having performed outstanding service to the club or community. The club shall pay normal dues for such person who may attend meetings, but is not entitled to privileges of active membership.

PRIVILEGED - A club member who has been a Lion for fifteen or more years and because of illness, infirmity, advanced age or other legitimate reason must relinquish his or her active status may become a Privileged Member. The member shall pay dues, have the right to vote and be entitled to all other privileges of membership except the right to hold Club, District or International office.

LION AT LARGE - A special leave of absence can only be extended to members who because of health or work commitment are unable to attend meetings. This classification is only extended for good reason and is reviewed every six months. The member shall pay club, district and international association dues but shall not be eligible to hold office or to vote at convention. Members who have moved away permanently and do not take steps of transfer to another Lions Club may be dropped from membership.

LIFE MEMBER - A club member who has maintained active membership for twenty or more years and has rendered outstanding service to the club or association, or one who is critically ill may be granted Life Membership upon recommendation by the club to the International Board of Directors, with payment by the club in lieu of all future dues to the International Association. The life member who desires to relocate and receives an invitation to join another Lions club shall automatically become a life member of that club and retain all privileges of active membership.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER is one who holds primary membership in another Lions club, but maintains a residence or is employed in the community served by our club. This status may be conferred by the board of directors and reviewed annually. The club shall not report an associate member on its membership and activities report. An associate member may vote on club matters, but may not represent the club as a delegate at convention. The club may assess such dues as deemed proper, however International, district and multiple district dues shall not be assessed on an associate member.

AFFILIATE MEMBER status may be conferred by the club board of directors to a quality individual who is unable to fully participate as an active member, but who desires to be affiliated with the club and support its community service initiatives. The member is required to pay normal dues and may vote on club matters, but may not represent the club as a delegate at conventions, nor be eligible to hold club, district, multiple district or international office.

LIONS INFORMATION

Proper indoctrination of new members is absolutely essential to future club growth. Statistics indicate that the lack of proper indoctrination is a major cause of membership dropout. Lionism offers a lifetime involvement of continually changing and expanding opportunities for friendship and service. It is an exciting and satisfying way of life, yet many Lions seem to miss some of the excitement and satisfaction of Lionism - perhaps because they never receive the message!

A well-informed membership makes for effective leadership for Knowledge is the basis of Leadership. Usually a Lion's first move toward leadership in the club is a committee chairman appointment. At the beginning of each Lions year the incoming President appoints chairmen to the various committees - those dedicated Lions who are willing to accept both the honour and duties of chairmanship. As new members are inducted they must also be assigned to a committee.

There are many sources of Lions Information:Websites : www.lionsclubs.org (International). www.lionsclubs.org.au (Australia). www.lionsq3.org.au (District Q3) and our Club https://dalby.qld.lions.org.au/.A vast wealth of Lions Information is available in THE LION magazine and from the Administrative and Constitutional Manual. The Multiple District Australian Lions Directory is issued to Lion Club members either in hard copy or compact disk form and paid by your annual dues. Listed therein are contact details of district and multiple district officers and Lion clubs. Brochures, posters and information on all the various multiple district projects and Lion activities is available from the Australian office and your district chairmen are only a phone call or e-mail away and very willing to assist with queries.

LION EDUCATION

The definition of Education as a preparation for complete living must not be construed as having scholastic application only, for the process of education is never ending. As Lions, we undergo this period of education by forming an acquaintance with our Constitution, Ethics and Purposes, by absorbing information made available to us and by becoming familiar with the many facets of Club, District and International administration.

It is the duty of every Lion to further his or her knowledge of Lionism and to seek new information on the workings of Lions Clubs International throughout the world.

If Lions are not educated in the ways of Lionism, how can they be expected to remain committed or support an organisation when they know so little of its operation ? Lion meetings to them become just a social gathering.

The enrichment and nurturing of our membership depends upon members being given the interesting details of our fascinating world-wide organisation. Various District Chairmen should be invited regularly as guest speakers to Club meetings, for these dedicated Lions are eager to share their specialised information about Lionism.

A well informed membership makes for effective Leadership, forKnowledge is the basis for Leadership, but Leadership in Lionism is sometimes lacking ! If Leadership is lacking, then Lionism and our community are the loser.

LION ATTENDANCE

Members are required to regularly attend club meetings and participate in club activities, bearing in mind that family and work commitments take first priority. If for any reason you cannot attend a forthcoming meeting, it is your responsibility to tender an early apology with the club secretary.

SERVICE HOURS

Each month all club secretaries must report to Lions Clubs International - total Service Hours, type of Activities completed and Monies donated by their club. This report eventually forms a total of Service, Donations and type of Service performed by Lions throughout the world.

At dinner meetings it is normal for each member to list their Service Hours for the previous monthly period. Should a correction be necessary it is ok to include same at the next meeting, but check first that which you added for the previous period. Include any service hours completed in the name of the club by yourself and family members :-

Assistance to persons, families and the elderly. Blood Bank. Bulletin preparation. Catering. Christmas Cakes. Clean up Australia. Collections. Convention. Golf Charity Days. Highway Signs. Hospital Visitations. Lions Information. Lion Mints. Used Spectacle collection . Cemetery Maintenance Youth Exchange. Youth of the Year, Children of Courage Peace and Fire Poster!

Once a project gains club approval it is ok to include Administration hours spent by the President, Secretary, Treasurer and Project Chairmen etc. Do not include hours spent at club meetings, social functions and project planning.

OUR LIONS CLUB OF DALBY INC HISTORY

Each new Lions club must have a sponsoring Lions club. The sponsor club seeks suitable prospective members in a community, and with assistance of the district extension chairman arranges for twenty or more prospective members to assume various club officer positions, then to conduct a formation meeting.

To ensure that a new club functions according to the Lion clubs constitution, it begins to carry out service and activity projects under the watchful eye of a Guiding Lion from the sponsor club. Usually three to four months after formation at a formal dinner attended by the sponsor club and many Lions from other clubs of the district and beyond, the new club is presented with it's Charter Certificate by the District Governor. Members of the new club are designated as Charter Members.

After nearly sixty years’ service our club has one charter members remaining, John Perry, and other Lions with their fifty year membership. John has maintained an ongoing history of the club which he will hopefully update for our 60 th Anniversary in February 2019. Our club will celebrate its sixtieth Charter Anniversary with a special dinner on 14th February 2019

The club banner has various patches and badges such as Best Bulletin Award, Convention Host, District Governor Home Club, or New Club Sponsor etc. etc. These were awarded by our District or by Lions Clubs International for outstanding club achievements.

It is important that you know all about your clubs history and activities so you can inform your friends, members of the public and any prospective members you may meet. You may notice many of your fellow members wearing different badges and award pins on special occasions. Ask them about these pins and how they are awarded.

LIONESS and LEO CLUBS

Prior to 1975 almost all Lion clubs enlisted support of their Ladies to assist with Lion projects, and raise funds to support the Lions club. The Ladies could not however have sole control over use of those funds.

LIONESS CLUBS were introduced as a project of their Lions club and are able to invite other persons to join. They are also able to run their own Administration and Activity bank accounts and disperse funds to needy causes of their choosing. Lioness Clubs must operate under the Constitution of Lions Clubs International with their motto being - We Serve Too. The Tara Lioness Club was sponsored by Dalby Lions Club.

LEO CLUBS are the project of a sponsoring Lions club and provide an opportunity for young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-eight to become better citizens, to run projects and activities for community service and to build their character through fellowship and social gatherings. L-E-O stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. Leo Clubs may be formed in the Community or within Secondary Schools, Colleges and Church Groups.

FACTS and FIGURES Where does my Membership dollar go ?

Membership in a Lions club is not expensive when compared to other groups, sporting clubs and the like. It relates to little more than $2 to $3 per week. Naturally this does not include meal or drink costs at dinner meetings and social events, but there is no requirement that members must eat or drink at these functions.

Our Lions Club of Dalby does not charge the normal joining fee to cover the International Fee for new members, new member kit and dinner badge etc. An annual subscription – presently $100.00 payable $50.00 half-yearly - covers International and Multiple District dues which include Public Liability Insurance, Australian Lion magazine, Multiple District Directory etc. District dues include administration expenses - postage, newsletter, district convention administration, district officer manuals etc and Club administration dues cover printing and postage, fidelity bonding for the treasurer and club officers, club newsletter, regalia etc.

Each club is billed for dues according to its number of members and the amount levied by multiple district and district is directly related to the overall number of Lions in respective areas. Therefore with more Lions, follows cheaper per capita charge, so -

Let us all seek out more members to keep our dues down!

Members who are not financial cost us all and may be dropped from membership. Other expenses such as fund raising equipment, insurance, voluntary levies for international, multiple district and district projects are usually met from the club's activity account. Each club must have at least two accounts - an Administration account funded by members’ dues and by subsidies from club social events and an Activity/Community Service account funded by public money or government grants.

On no account can Activity/Community Service monies be used for the benefit of members!

OBLIGATION of MEMBERSHIP

MORAL - Lionism is a way of Life. A Lion must be prepared to pursue Lions Club Purposes and to live by the Code of Ethics in daily life. Each Lion should be aware of Lion Constitutions and obligations to them.A Lions club is a SERVICE Club and each Lion must be ready to give of time, labour and means in Service to the Community.

FINANCIAL commitment includes semi-annual dues, dining fees, Ladies nights, charter and installation nights, attendance at projects and convention plus other special functions.

SOCIAL commitment includes attendance at all meetings of the club and committee to which appointed and club projects.Partners Nights play an important part in club social life and partners are cordially invited to participate. Visits to other clubs and official functions are encouraged wherever possible. Attendance at annual conventions is desirable although not obligatory, but will allow one to appreciate the real meaning of International Lionism.

AWARDS of LIONISM

Lions may qualify for various awards, as recognition for a successfully performed service.100% President, 100% Secretary, 100% Treasurer, President's Appreciation Award, Key Membership, Appreciation Certificates.Membership keys are awarded to Lions who introduce new members to the Club and are issued after the new member has remained in the club for one year and a day. Keys are numbered 2, 5, 10, 15, etc in increments of five. These prestigious awards recognise key people of our organisation - those committed to building our clubs. The Key is an instrument to open a closed door and because of this significance is presented to Key Lions who have accepted a challenge to strengthen our club and the Association.

LION CONVENTIONS

Three Lion conventions of particular interest are held annually and these offer a great opportunity to meet other Lions, exchange ideas and witness the policies and programs being discussed and formulated. Certain Officers are elected for the ensuing year, with social functions and fellowship making attendance a great experience.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION is held annually in June or early July as an Annual General Meeting of the Association at a world capital venue where voting is taken on constitutional amendments, election of board members, seminars, and business sessions. The parade of nations is a march of Lions and delegates from all over the world, being a truly great experience to witness colourful displays and uniforms.

MULTIPLE DISTRICT CONVENTION is conducted over four days during April or May each year in a capital or major provincial city of Australia. The event includes the changeover of District Governors and election of a Council Chairman together with seminars, forums and social events. It is the venue where many lasting friendships are made with Lions from all over Australia.

DISTRICT CONVENTION is the chief deliberative body of our 201Q3 district. The District Governor, Vice District Governors, Cabinet Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Cabinet Treasurer, and Constitution and By-Laws Chairman are elected and the next Convention City is named. Action is taken on matters pertaining to the district which are consistent with the constitution and by-laws of Lions Clubs International. Each club should be represented by its full quota of delegates and because it is not always possible for all clubs to be represented at the International convention - as many Lions as possible should attend the district convention where they will gain a broad vision of the association and mingle in first-class fellowship with fellow Lions.

Held over a weekend in late September/early October each year, elections take place, district projects and activities are discussed and awards are made to clubs. Usually this convention begins Friday evening with a flag raising ceremony, opening ceremony, entertainment and an informal reception where everyone meet to renew friendships and make new friends. The Saturday procession, business session, forum and lunch is followed by a keynote speaker, with a ladies tour and dinner dance or ball in the evening. Sunday remembrance ceremony, business sessions and reports, guest speaker and presentation is followed by a wind up barbeque lunch and goodbyes.
