    Why are you running?

I would like to continue serving Denton through my work on the City Council. Myrecord on the Council shows that I have experience, that I am effective, and that I am notstuck in the status quo. During my four years on Council we have added over 50% to the

road repair budget, attracted and kept business in Denton accounting for over 1,500 jobs, and made our streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. We placed stricter regulationson gas well drillers, and strengthened our smoking ordinance to improve the health andsafety of workers and customers. We have improved opportunities for citizens tocommunicate with the city and worked to protect neighborhoods. I am asking the votersto allow me to continue the work illustrated by my record.

Describe your professional experience and how it qualifies you for office.

I am retired after 38 years in public education. Most of my experience has been as apublic school principal in the Denton. As a principal I worked with the public and within

the school district organization to solve problems and carry out our objectives. As a CityCouncilman I work with the public and with staff in the city to solve problems andachieve our objectives. I also have 18 years of experience serving on city boards andcommittees and almost four years on the Council. That experience has helped me to bemore effective in representing the citizens of Denton.

What capital project is most needed for Denton and how would you pay for it?

Our most immediate and pressing need is to repair and rebuild our streets. When I got oncouncil the city was spending $ 4.3 million a year on street repairs when we needed toinvest $ 10 million. We have increased our road repair budget by over 50% and have aplan to grow that budget even more until we reach our goal. In addition, we askedcitizens to approve a $ 21 million bond program to rebuild streets in the worst condition.Other projects are planned for our water, wastewater, and electric utilities. These areneeded due to our continued growth and aging infrastructure.

In what areas do you see waste in your government and what would you do aboutit?

There are always areas where we can become more efficient but I dont see waste in ourcity government. During the economic downturn the staff worked very hard to savemoney and operate more efficiently and cutting internal costs by close to one million peryear. During the toughest economic period in the last 60 years we have been able tocontinue city operations with no major disruptions to the services received by ourresidents.

What do you think is the most pressing issue for the city right now and why?

Growth is our most pressing issue. In 2012, Denton was the seventh fastest growing cityin the United States! We have ranked in the top ten fastest growing cities during most of

the last ten years. Growth is an issue because we must be smart in how we manage ourgrowth. The decisions we make now will have an impact lasting 50 to 100 years. If wedo it right, we can grow in a way that preserves many of the characteristics that makeDenton unique and attracted our residents and businesses to move or stay here. We needto add jobs and diversify our tax base, while also providing parks and libraries that

improve the quality of life. Our goal is to make Denton a great place to live, work, learn, play, and do business.
