Background
• Education:- Georgia Tech- Electrical Engineering- Rising Senior
• Position:- Electromagnetic Compatibility Intern- NASA ES45- Sub-element Lead: Tom Perry- Skill Lead: Rick Houston- Mentor: Mike Crane
3
ES45 – Who are we?
• Telemetry• Electromagnetic Environmental Effects
(E3)• Lightning, Solar Flares, ESD, HIRF, EMP• Supporting ISS and SLS• Interference testing
4
What is Electromagnetic Compatibility?
• A branch of electrical engineering concerned with mitigating the unwanted generation, propagation, or reception of electromagnetic signals and effects
• Helps to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) as well as possible damage to operational equipment
5
Parallel Wire Coupling
• Coupling refers to the transfer of energy between circuit mediums
• ‘Crosstalk’ specifically refers to capacitive and inductive coupling (due to electric and magnetic fields)
• Want to be able to predict voltages on one wire due to nearby voltage-induced wires
• Attempting to validate a Boeing Matlab model
6
The Setup
7
Shielded Victim Wire
Culprit Wire
Voltage Probes
Signal Generator
RF Power Amplifier
Can The Coupling Be Predicted?
8
What We Found
• Coupling measurements much higher than those predicted by the model
• Most of the coupling was inductive• Proper shielding procedures cannot be
neglected
9
Other Projects
• NSI Fuse Testing• Antenna Design• Power Supply Controller Soldering
10
Acknowledgments
• Clint Patton• Tom Perry• Rick Houston• Jacobs Recruiting Team and Human
Resources• The other interns!
