    Daniel Hewitt

Daniel Hewitt is based in London where he uses his knowledge in Geology to aid himin taking some of the best current architecture photos around. There are manyreasons why his work has inspired me to use some aspects of his photography in myown work.

One if the main things that I see, especially in his Geometry + Geology series, is hisuse of high contrast black and white. In this image he uses this technique to

personify an urban and run down feeling. You can really see the highlights andshadows pop to show of the age in thebuilding. The composition of this shot alsomakes the area look very unwelcoming, especially with the graffiti in the righthand corner and the empty recreationalarea, which makes the estate lookdeserted.

Its also intere sting to see that hisprojects don t feature much symmetry, but introduce scale instead. In this projectHewitt explores how the architecture ofbuildings resembles some aspects ofnatural landscape.

By looking at the picture on the right youcan see that the rock formation takes anon-symmetrical approach to show off the

irregularities in the landscape. In contrast, the non-symmetrical approach to hiscityscapes resembles the uneven terrain ofa mountainous landscape. By comparingthese two photographs you also notice thatthe colours and textures between the rockyhillside and the urban building share similarlooks to one another. The high contrasttones in both images show off theweathered, erosive appearance that Hewitt

appears to share throughout this series ofphotos. In this image the clarity really

brings out the detailing in the rock, which emphasizes its rough edges.

Daniel Hewitts exploration into scale also continues into his other work as well. Hestarted the Shard project back in 2010, which concentrates on its construction overtwo years.

By looking at the first picture in hisproject, Hewitts photograph of theLondon skyline looks dwarfed comparedto the enclosing cloud formation. With thehelp from the dark, high contrast imageHewitt really captures a polluted smalllooking London.

On the other hand, the first stage of theShard construction creates a real sense ofdominance as the peak of the structuredisappears into the clouds. This iseffective through his ground level positionrather than the Ariel shot of the London. In essence this makes the scale of theShard seem monolithic compared to thesmaller buildings in the foreground. Thephotograph also connotes rich and poor.

The lower, darker buildings look derelict
