Main uses:

– data source for preparing the publication „Bilans zasobów kopalin i wód podziemnych w Polsce” (only in Polish) – translated as „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater Resources in Poland”;

– basis for the publication „Mineral Resources of Poland”(issued every five years since 1996, only in English);

– data source for local and government administration

Page 15: Database on Polish mineral raw material deposits (the ... data on mine water ... Midas database – mine water quantity and ... holders and sent to the Economic Geology Department;

The formal base to prepare the „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater

Resources in Poland”:

- The Mining and Geological Act (in Polish: „Prawo geologiczne i górnicze”) states that the Ministry of the Environment is one of the geological administration authorities in Poland;

- one of the tasks entrusted to the Ministry of the Environment is balancing of mineral raw materials;

- according to the Act mentioned above PGI-NRI fulfils the role of the State Geological Survey and prepares (by Economic Geology Department) „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater Resources in Poland” in order of the Ministry of the Environment (Department of Geology and Geological Concessions);

- the „Annual Report …” is financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

MINISTRY OFTHE ENVIRONMENT

• the first paper issued in 1953• issued annually – it is 55th

edition• prepared on the basis of the

System of Management and Protecting of Polish Mineral Raw Materials – MIDASsince 1988

• the 2009 edition (as of 31.12.2008) contains data on 10,347 deposits

Page 17: Database on Polish mineral raw material deposits (the ... data on mine water ... Midas database – mine water quantity and ... holders and sent to the Economic Geology Department;

The stages of preparing „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and

Groundwater Resources in Poland”:

• First step is to collect data on every deposit under exploitation, according to the special forms which are filled in by the concession holders and sent to the Economic Geology Department;

• Data are input into the database MIDAS and elaborated according to the standards of „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater Resources in Poland”;

• The chapters referring to the particular commodities are prepared by specialists from the Economic Geology Department;

• The publication has to be approved by Department of Geology and Geological Concessions (Ministry of the Environment) and then can be issued (usually in October).

Page 18: Database on Polish mineral raw material deposits (the ... data on mine water ... Midas database – mine water quantity and ... holders and sent to the Economic Geology Department;

The structure of the „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and

Groundwater Resources in Poland”:

• Mineral raw materials are presented within four main groups:- Fuels- Metals- Chemical raw materials- Rock raw materials• There are detached chapters connected with: export and import

of mineral raw materials; groundwater resources; wastes produced during the exploitation and processing of mineral raw materials; maps of the mineral raw materials deposits occurrence;

• There are usually three types of table presented in every chapter: type 1. presents the magnitude of mineral raw material resources and state of their identification and management (for the whole country); type 2. presents the list of the deposits occurring in Poland (in regional or administrative order) jointly with the resources/reserves base, output and location respectively; type 3. presents the volume and the directions of mineral raw material export and import;

• For selected raw materials such as natural gas and crude oil there is also a table which presents the output in regional order.

Export and import of mineral raw materials in Poland

• Information on the trade turnover in exports and imports of mineral raw materials in Poland are prepared according to Combined Nomenclature (CN), which is deeply connected with the international classification system named Harmonized System – HS.

• Data are gained from the Custom Service (Polish name: Centrum Analityczne Administracji Celnej) and collected in the database PRICESMIN. In 2009 database was incorporated into the modernized MIDAS system as one of its modules (the name has changed into the Mineral Raw Materials Management).

• The information are elaborated according to the needs of „Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater Resources in Poland”. The criterion for including the particular raw material in the report is the volume of its import and export, which has to reach the minimum value of PLN 10,000 thousand.

„Annual Report of Mineral Reserves/Resources and Groundwater Resources in Poland” also includes information on:

• Wastes produced during the exploitation of mineral raw material, are divided into two categories:

1. mining wastes produced in the act of exctracting mineral raw material from the deposit;

2. wastes produced during the processing of the commodity which has been already extracted.

There is a table presenting the amount of wastes which were produced and utilized – depending on the mineral raw material and from particular deposits.

• Groundwater resources, with two main types of groundwater:1. Drinking and industrial water There are admissible volumes of exctracted groundwater and disposable

resources (presented in administrative and regional order respectively) on the basis of the data obtained from PGI-NRI and Department of Geology and Geological Concessions.

2. Mineral water – brines, therapeutic water and termal water (qualified to the mineral raw materials)

There are two lists of deposits and wells (arranged in regional and administrative order respectively) jointly with the resources base, water withdrawal and location. The data are obtained from MIDAS and Hydro Bank databases.

Terminology and classification of the resources used in this paper is an attempt to adapt the national classification to

the United Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC).

The adaptation of Polish terminology to the UNFC has been carried out for years and – thanks to the efforts made by M. Piwocki, S. Przeniosło and M. Nieć – the substantial

progress was made.Current Workshop is an occasion to present the results of

these attempts.

The structure of the „Mineral Resources of Poland”:

• Mineral raw materials are presented in alphabetical order;

• There is a table placed in every chapter – it presents the magnitude of mineral raw material resources and state of their identification and management (for the whole country);In the next edition resources will be shown according to the UNFC

• For most of the mineral raw materials there is a graph presented in the chapter, which shows the resource base and the output of particular mineral raw material in a representative period of time;

• Similarly to the Polish version of the publication, there is a table presenting the volume and the directions of mineral raw material export and import;

• There is a chapter connected with export and import of mineral raw materials and the glossary, where all definitions of the terms used in the publication can be found.

Future works

• there will be necessary to make calculations allowing to presentthe resources of all of mineral raw materials according to the UNFC;

• they will be included in the next edition of „Mineral Resources of Poland” which should be prepared and published by the end of the year (on the basis of the approved Polish edition);

• „Mineral Resources of Poland” will be available on the PGI-NRI website: www.pgi.gov.pl;

• in the MIDAS system - also available on the PGI-NRI website -the section named „ KM” (International Classification) is being prepared. It will enable to obtain simple reports demonstrating the magnitude of mineral raw materials resources according to the UNFC.
