English Writing

Listen to the radio announcement that told the people of Britain that their country was at war with Germany. Jot down how you think people felt when they heard this for the first time. (Please note: most families did not have television at this time so listening to the radio was how they would have found out the news.) https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/history-ks2-world-war-2-clips-the-declaration-of-war/z4qn6v4

Now watch the opening scene from Goodnight Mr Tom (from 0:00 – 2:34mins).

As you are watching, look at the different types of people who are sat in the church

(families with children, an RAF officer and his wife, elderly couples etc.) and think about how they are feeling. Write down words and phrases that could describe this scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j8awfdvxaw (PG certificate).

Now use a thesaurus or www.wordhippo.com to improve your vocabulary. For example, ‘a lady holding her husband’s hand’ may become ‘an anxious wife clutching her husband’s hand’.

Using the words and phrases you have gathered, select one from the following written outcomes.

- Write a free-verse poem (there are no rules for this type of poetry) to depict the scene you have watched.

- Write a short narrative piece based on the scene.

English Reading

They hadn’t seen each other for many years. It felt strange to be together again after so long.

They had shared so many memories; memories of fame, fortune and glamour. Together, their minds wandered back to the best times of their lives…

1. How did they feel when they were reunited? 2. Why haven’t they seen each other for so long? 3. How long have they know each other? 4. How do you think they first got into dancing? 5. Were they professionals or was it simply a hobby? (Look at the story starter to help you

with this answer).

Today, I’d like you to create a mini dictionary for this week’s spellings!

Fractions

Solve the following subtractions! 1. 78 – 53 = 6. 27 – 53 = 2. 456 – 111 = 7. 100,000 – 10,000 = 3. 100 – 0.1 = 8. 408 – 19 = 4. 4586 – 1471 = 9. 73,043 – 3000 = 5. 47,001 – 59 = 10. 80,261 – 7000 =

Maths LO: To round a number with two decimal places to one decimal place. Yesterday, we rounded to the nearest whole number. Today. We’re going to round to one decimal place. Let’s look at 7.38. First, we need to identify the two tenths numbers that 7.38 is between. Visualising this on a number line is helpful.

We then need to look at the value of the hundredths digit. In this case, the hundredths digit is 8. Using the same rule as yesterday,

7.38 rounded to one decimal place = 7.4

Now let’s look at 12.73 First, we need to identify the two tenths numbers that 12.73 is between.

We then need to look at the value of the hundredths digit, which is 3. Because it is less than 5, we round down to .7, so 12.73 rounded to one decimal place = 12.7

Finally, let’s look at 25.15.

The hundredths digit is 5. That means we round up to the next TENTH. Now, our tenths digit has changed from 1 to 2.

25.15 rounded to one decimal place = 25.2

History

LO: To write a letter in role as an evacuee from World War II.

Look at the suitcase and its contents. How old do you think the suitcase is? Who do you think the suitcase belongs to? What do you think it is to be used for? What do you know about the contents of the case? What do the contents tell us about the owner of the case? Why would the owner of the case need those items? What else might the owner want to pack in the case?

The suitcase belongs to a child, who was evacuated during World War II.

It contains clothing items, a ration book, identity card and food for the journey. Many children took other personal items like a teddy bear, a toy or comics.

Some poorer children could not afford a suitcase so they carried their belongings in a haversack or tied them up in jute instead. Some very poor children did not take any personal belongings at all.

During World War II, many people were evacuated from the cities to the countryside where it was believed they would be safer from bombing.

In total, over 3.5 million children were evacuated.

Mostly children were evacuated but other evacuees included mothers with very young children, pregnant women, disabled people, teachers and helpers to look after the children.

Evacuation happened in distinct waves with the first wave of evacuations beginning on the 1st September, 1939, which was two days before Britain officially declared war on Germany. Other waves occurred at the start of the Battle of Britain in June 1940 and at the start of the Blitz in September 1940.

At the start of the war, to many people in Britain, it seemed that not much was happening. As a result, some parents decided to bring their children home again.

Some children were evacuated overseas and lived with host families in places as far away as Australia and Canada.

Your challenge is to write a letter in role as an evacuee from World War II.

Imagine you are an evacuee from a city, who has just been billeted with a family in the countryside.

Write a letter home to your parents describing your experience so far.

Make sure you organise your letter into sensible paragraphs and that you keep related information together.
