is the time to start getting ready to go to 4-H Camp! We still have both boy and girl beds availa-
ble. Send your camp application to the 4-H office as soon as you can. Don’t forget to get your leader and school administrator to sign your applica-

We will be attending camp July 24 – 28, 2017. The theme for this year is “Catch
Your Dreams”. The letters and applications were handed out at the January club meet-
ings. All applications should be submitted through your 4-H leader at each school.
The first round of camp invitation letters was mailed to campers in late February and
the second will go out in mid March. The final alternates list, will go out in early April! Don’t delay returning your registration paperwork. We are looking forward to another fun
week at 4-H Camp. We hope you will join us.

Junior Leader Meeting It’s never too late for 8-12 graders to
join the Lafayette Parish 4-H Junior Leadership Club. The next scheduled
meeting of the Junior Leadership Club is Tuesday, March 21st at 6:00 p.m.,
here at the 4-H office. Fees are
$10.00 for all new members.
Are You Changing Schools?
If you will be moving to a new
school next year, check to see if they have 4-H at your new school. There is
a 4-H club at nearly every school in the parish. Some of the middle and high
school clubs meet either before or after
school, while some allow 4-H to meet during the school day.
If you move to a school which doesn’t have a 4-H club, but you’d
like to stay active, you have the option to join as Member-at-Large. We will mail the newsletters to
you and you can still participate in the contests,
workshops, and camps.
A Member-at-Large Club for 4th—8th
Graders meets monthly at the 4-H Office. To be eligible to join the Member-at-Large Club, you must:
1. Either live and/or go to school in the parish.
2. Attend a school where 4-H is not offered.
A home-school club is also available for students who are home-schooled.
If you attend a school where 4-H is offered you should join as a member of that club.
If you are having trouble finding a 4-H Club, give
us a call at 291-7090.
Attention 7th-8th Graders
Louisiana 4-H Outdoor Science and
Technology Camp (LOST CAMP) is available to 4-H members in 7th-8th grades. This camp will
take place July 30- August 2, 2017. Applications were mailed out to all 7th & 8th graders in mid-
February. They are to be returned to the 4-H
Office on March 8, 2017.

from all 64 parishes gather on the campus of LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY in Baton Rouge to

“Clover College”.

Last month, we highlighted how important it is to
apply youth voice, problem solving and reflection throughout the duration. This month we will discuss
the importance of meaningful service.
Service activities should be constant and over a
long period. Research suggests that a minimum of 40
hours over a school year is necessary for youth to yield positive results for students and the community.
Teachers or sponsors need to work with students in order to draw the connections between what the
students are doing and what they should be learning.
Even when service activities are conducted outside
of class, it is important that the project have clear and
specific objectives. It should have strong ties to the curriculum they are studying. The connection between
service and democratic practices, ideas, and history should be made clear. This is how students begin to
see service as a civic responsibility.
Project members should be given time to reflect on their service. That may require you to keep a journal,
or have adults lead discussions or coordinate activities that allow members to think critically about their
service. These activities need to be planned, not left to chance.
Students should be involved in leadership roles in
all phases of the project. In order to ensure that service is truly useful and strengthens community ties,
strong partnerships with community groups based on mutually agreed upon goals, roles, and responsibilities
are essential.
Next month, we will highlight the importance of evaluation.
