Personal Goods brought to school at own riskThe Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools, and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. Student accident insurance/ambulance cover policies are available from some commercial insurers, and can be obtained by parents/guardians for individual students. Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any re-sponsibility for any loss or damage. Students are discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school. SHINMINATO 2016Cultural Exchange Visit to Shinminato Sister School

It has been a few years since Noble Park Students have visited our Sister School, but 2016 is the year that we hope to go back. After such a successful visit from Shinminato Senior High, a number of our students have been itching to get the chance to return the visit.

Our visit is planned for the last week of Term 3 next year. We will visit Shinminato from September 12th to 16th. At this stage we are planning for one week homestay followed by another week travelling around Japan including Kyoto and Tokyo. There are two main options; the cheapest is for a ten-day stay, which will cost just under $2,500. A two week tour, including a seven-day rail pass and a stay in a traditional Japanese inn has been quoted as $2,900. Prices include accommodation, some meals (but not all), Tokyo Disneyland Passport, most train fares (not subways or buses), and travel insurance. When travelling, students will need to purchase their own lunch and some other meals. Of course, students will need their own money for souvenirs.

During the homestay, our students will be staying with some of the families who visited Noble Park in July this year. We will be able to practice our Japanese with our Host Families. For more information, please contact Russell Turnbull.

FAQ

• Can any student go? Yes. Any student from the school is eligible to apply.

• Does it matter if I cannot speak Japanese? Of course, the more Japanese you can speak, the better. Our Japanese students, particularly senior students, will be able to speak quite a lot. But it doesn’t matter if you speak no Japa-nese. You will come back speaking more Japanese than you knew when you left!

• Why Shinminato? Our first student to visit Shinminato was back in the late 1980s through Rotary. Almost twenty years ago, we became Sister Schools.

• Is there anything we can do to help raise money to assist? We will have some school activities to help raise funds. We will also seek sponsorship.

There will be a meeting of all students who are interested in visiting Japan and their families early in 2016. Please fill in the form and return it to the school.

I am interested in travelling to Japan with NPSC Shinminato cultural exchange in 2016.

School Council Elections 2016

What is a School Council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, School Council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the School Council?

For most school councils, there are two main categories of membership:• A mandated elected Parent category – more than one third of the total members must be from this category.

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employers can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school.

• A mandated elected DEECD employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school elections. Please Note: If positions remain unfilled, it may be a decision of Council after the election process, to co-opt person/s to a vacant position.

An optional Community Member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experience. DEECD employees are not eligible to be a Community Member.

Why is Parent Membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

How can you become involved?

The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider

• Standing for election as a member of the school council• Encouraging another person to stand for election

Do I need special experience to be on School Council?

No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

School Council Elections – Information for Parents

What do you need to do to stand for election?

The Principal will issue a Notice of Elections and call for Nominees following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March, unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category.DEECD employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council at that school.Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the Principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election.Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.

Remember

• Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do.• Consider standing for elections to council this year.• Be sure to vote in the elections.

Contact the Principal for further information.
