The Great Vegie Crunch

On Thursday, 12th of September Hyden Primary School participated

enthusiastically in the Great Vegie Crunch. Every student and our staff

participated and had a lot of fun eating, naming and exploring differ-

ent, nutritious vegetables. We also used the Crunch and Sip app to rec-

ord our eating sounds on the Crunch-o-meter, which was funny and

we managed a ‘crocodile’ crunch. Thank you to Mrs Ditchburn, Miss

Burns and Miss Mortimer for cutting up the yummy vegetable platters.

It’s not ok to be away—Attendance Data

2019 National School Opinion Survey

Thank you to the staff, parents and students who completed the National School Opinion Survey. Each

question was given a score out of 5. When analysing the data, the staff and I felt that anything above 4.0

was a strength area and anything below became a focus area. I am pleased to state that all areas either

remained at the same score or showed an improvement since last year’s survey. Particular areas of strength

from all three stakeholders were: students and parents can talk to teachers, students like being at this

school, teachers at this school are good teachers and teachers at Hyden care about the students. It was

pleasing to see that ‘behaviour is well managed’ was a growth area for students, improving by 0.6. The

main focus area continues to be about the maintenance of the school, and will be a focus in our new Busi-

ness Plan.

Interschool Carnival

Last Friday, Hyden Primary School participated in an Interschool Athletics Carnival in Newdegate. We

competed against Newdegate, Lake King, Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun. The students showed courage, de-

termination, enthusiasm and a large amount of sportsmanship. I was very proud of their efforts and am very

pleased to announce that we came second in the competition. Congratulations to James Kittyea for being

Intermediate Champion Boy, Sari Baker for being Sub-junior Runner-up Champion Girl, Paige Biglin for

being Senior Runner-up Champion Girl and Alastair Nield for being Senior Runner-up Champion Boy.

Thank you to all the parents and staff who assisted on the day. If you were at the carnival, and would like

to provide feedback about the day, please contact the office by email or phone.

When we use the Key Links books we complete guided reading rotations. We read a rotation twice (once to

Miss Hewett and once to Mrs A), complete a worksheet based on our book independently and have a treat

of Reading Eggs. We have got so independent with our learning and love reading our awesome range of

books!

Last Thursday, the Year 5/6 students were educated by physiotherapist, Maddy Petchell about how their back and spine works and how to look after them so they have healthy backs in their future. The presenter gave them 2 biscuits and a marshmallow each and they moved these in different ways to simulate how their back vertebrae works and is cushioned. They also practised sitting and standing with good posture and were also shown why it's important to wear school bags properly. BOTH straps should be worn and fitted proper-ly so students can carry the heavier items close to their backs and any irregular items need to go at the top or in the outer compartments of bags. This will protect your backs and help prevent scoliosis. Lastly the stu-dents were shown how to lift heavy loads and how important it is to use our legs and stomach, which have large muscles, rather than our backs, which can't cope with heavy loads. The students could practice on a wooden aide/puppet, which showed them the difference and they could also feel it as well, which was a very effective exercise. Hopefully next time they lift a load they will remember this! Spinal injury and the effect screen time has on their posture and backs was also discussed. Well done Year 5's and 6's on your attentive listening and great participation!

Assembly and Grandparents Day

HY DE N PRI MAR Y S CHOOL Page 8

Grandparents are grand, wonderful and magnificent and play such an important role in our young chil-dren’s lives. It is fitting that we at Hyden Primary School honour our grandparents who help children be-come aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.

At our school assembly last Thursday the children from Kindy – Year 6 recited the poem ‘What are Grand-parents Made Of?’ by Teri Harrison. Following the assembly, grandparents were invited into the class-rooms to view their grandchildren’s work and then share in an afternoon tea in the undercover area. We thank the number of grandparents who travelled far and wide who attend the assembly; it was wonderful to see so many grandparents in the audience.
