Welcome Back!

Educators Attend Move On When Ready Training

Move On When Ready (MOWR) is Georgia’s new dual enrollment program that

allows high school students to earn college credit while working on their high

school diplomas.

The new law streamlines the existing dual enrollment options into one program with

one funding source. By consolidating the existing programs into a single program, it

will be easier for students and parents to navigate and take advantage of the

available options to enroll in college courses while still in high school. The new

MOWR program includes provisions to help remove some of the financial barriers

that may prevent students from participating in a dual enrollment program. The new

MOWR was signed into law on April 30, 2015 and went into effect on July 1, 2015.

The new MOWR program is administered by the Georgia Student Finance

Commission.

MOWR Training was held at the Macon

Centreplex on July 30 to provide new MOWR

(Senate Bill 132/Senate Bill 2) information. All

high school counselors attended the training as

well as David McDermott, Director of CTAE

and Kathy James, Coordinator for Student

Services.

CTAE is for ALL Georgia Students!

In high school, students have access to multiple outlets for success and finally have the opportunity to decide which one is

right for them. With so many opportunities to select, Career, Technical and Agricultural Education outshines the rest due

to its ability to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for career readiness and success no matter what

trade or professional career students choose after high school graduation. CTAE courses are not just the cooking and typ-

ing classes anymore, but rather have become the largest providers of skills used in ALL of the top 10 jobs of 2020. There

is a demand for skilled, smart, and determined students and CTAE creates the path for those students to step forward and

receive the career worth working for.

Prior to my high school journey I was unsure of what my direction was, and it was such an amazing feeling to find Family

and Consumer Sciences where I “fit in” and carried me to joining Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America

(FCCLA) and pursuing an office position in high school. As a freshman in high school, you often have to wonder what

clique you fall into and what lunch table you have to worry about sitting at. Fortunately, I fell right into the CTAE clique

that encompassed passionate, driven students and was able to break boundaries by connecting with students on the local,

state, and national levels.

With my amazing CTAE pathway Nutrition and Food Science, and my amazing experiences with FCCLA, I have been

able to travel across the country, create life-long friendships, develop professionalism, and much more. FCCLA has grant-

ed me the opportunity to advocate for CTAE and its importance as local as my Board of Education and as nation wide as

in front of the United States Department of Education. Without CTAE classes, I’m pretty sure I would have just stared at

the clock for 8 hours at school. However, I was so blessed to have the opportunity to thrive in a classroom that has helped

me find a profession that I thoroughly enjoy.

As a Georgia FCCLA State Officer and now a National FCCLA Officer, I have seen firsthand that the skills for life that

CTAE classes instill in its students are lifelong and life changing. These skills for life include planning, goal setting, deci-

sion-making, and interpersonal communications that you unknowingly use in everyday life. CTAE classes also connect

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to real life scenarios and allow for students to advance their core aca-

demics in a more successful setting. Once you find a CTAE pathway that fits your individual personality, the word “job”

turns into the word “career”. With CTAE classes available to students, success becomes much more immediate and much

more achievable.

County Schools graduate, and this fall she will attend the University of Georgia.

for students by creating several

enrichment opportunities for

students. HCCA would like to

recognize and thank those of our

community members and

partners who donated their time

and wisdom to help further these

bright starts to our Healthcare

Providers of tomorrow! Joy

Knight, pictured at right, Health

Educator for Houston County

Health Department, dedicated

an entire day to talk to students about the resources available at the Houston County Health Department.

She also talked to the students candidly about her experiences working in public health. HCCA is

thankful for her time and expertise and are proud to partner with the Houston County Health Department

as a community partner and resource. This is Mrs. Knight’s second year supporting the program and

speaking to classes.

Mrs. Patti Stogner, with CAREing Paws, talked to

students about her work with therapy dogs and

brought her dog, Kaija, as a special guest! Students

were able to interact and see first-hand some the

benefits of integrating animals into healthcare and

the healing process. This is Mrs. Stogner’s second

year supporting the program and speaking to the

classes.

Dr. Jimmy Colquitt, Respiratory Therapist and Instructor

at Middle Georgia State University, visited HCCA

classes for two days bringing some of his own students

to help teach high school students about intubation and

respiratory care. Dr. Colquitt brought pig lungs to

demonstrate anatomical similarities to the human lung as

well as a simulated smoker’s lung to demonstrate the

importance of a healthy lifestyle free from smoking.

Dr. Colquitt engaged students and talked to them about

being an advisor at the college level and his

recommendations for the best path to medical school.

Dr. Colquitt has been a long standing supporter of the

Mrs. Teresa Sullivan came to talk to HCCA

students about Hospice. She discussed her role as an

RN and what is expected with Hospice care.

Students were able to ask questions about caring for

patients in a home environment and the

qualifications needed to become a Hospice patient

experience for HCCA students.

HCCA students hosted the second annual HCCA Healthcare Science Health Fair. Students prepared

various stations including: check-in with informed consent, blood pressure, pulse oxygen saturation,

height, weight, body mass index, balance, hand washing, CPR, AED, pulse with doppler ultrasound,

vision screening, reflex testing, step test, and writing cards to send to children in the hospital. There were

more than 150 volunteers at the health fair including parents, students, teachers, and members of the

Perry Chamber of Commerce. This was a great opportunity for students to practice skills they had learned

all year.

Houston County Career Academy is very proud of their students. Students were recognized in front of

peers, family, and friends on May 3 in an official HCCA Healthcare Awards Ceremony. These students

have worked hard to gain state Certified Nursing Assistant qualifications and National Medical Office

Assistant certifications. HCCA is proud to work closely with work-based learning coordinators in the

county to provide novice level positons for students, for they are the future healthcare leaders of the

community! HCCA thanks everyone for all of the support they have received and look forward to another

great year!
