Houston County High School

On March 15th – 17th, thousands of middle and high school Family and Consumer Sciences students across the state attended the Georgia FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Students were challenged to “spy” their inner leader by engaging in leadership sessions, educational workshops, networking opportunities, and competitive events.

At the 2019 State Leadership Conference, Houston County High School FCCLA members excelled in their leadership skills and received outstanding recognition for various successes in FCCLA. Many FCCLA competitors from Houston County High School shined in competitive events, bringing home ten gold medals, six silver medals, and five bronze medals in STAR Event Competitions.

Spying Success at State for HCHS FCCLA (continued)

Katie Hampton, Sarah Mondock, and Karlyn Griggs – gold in Chapter Service Project Portfolio Occupational;

Jordan Beal and Neveah Turner – gold in Chapter Service Project Portfolio, Senior; Abby McDowell and Kennedi Rooks – silver in Illustrated Talk Occupational; Brenay Robnsion and Asia Lesane – silver in National Programs in Actions, Junior; Krish Patel and Alyssa Calvert – bronze in Chapter Service Project Display; Jada Carswell, Rachel McGhee, and Cierra Johnson – bronze in Focus on Children Occupational. Other HCHS FCCLA members that showcased their skills included Noah Mitchell and Brynley Jones who took the FCCLA Statesman Test and Henry Pham, Dakobie Garcia, and Mary DeTota who competed in the Food Science Investigation State Event. Wahome Muriuki, FCCLA State Vice President of Membership, also led FCCLA in various sessions and ended his term as a State Officer for the 2018 – 2019 year by being awarded with a Silver Level State Officer Scholarship. HCHS FCCLA was well represented at the State Leadership Conference, but the success did not end with competitive events alone. HCHS FCCLA Advisers, Brittany Tolleson and Shonda McFadden, were awarded with the Master Adviser and Adviser Mentor Awards. HCHS FCCLA also received the Career Connection National Program Award, Honor Roll with Distinction, Largest Chapter Membership for Region 7, and was once again awarded the highest honor to be bestowed upon FCCLA chapters within the state – FCCLA Chapter of the Year. Houston County High School FCCLA is proud of the hard work, dedication, and commitment of all its members who help make the local chapter a success and is looking forward to continued success in the future by continuing to engage students in “The Ultimate Leadership Experience.” FCCLA is a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since its founding in 1945. Houston County High School is located at 920 Highway 96 in Warner Robins, Georgia. Dr. Doug Rizer serves as Principal.

HCHS Students Win State Technology Awards

Houston County High School’s Technology Student Association (TSA) members competed in 19 events at the TSA State Leadership Conference held March 14 - 16 in Athens, Georgia. The students placed in the top-10 in the state in nine events. Of Houston County High’s 14 participants, more than half competed for the first time in a tough arena. Congratulations to the following students: 1st place - Technology Bowl - Hayden Merrill, Christopher Saetia and Avery Sawyer; 2nd place - Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Architecture - Christopher Saetia; 4th place - Future Technology Teacher - Christopher Saetia; 5th place - Music Production - Sonia Wei; 6th place - Architectural Design - Christopher Saetia, Sonia Wei and Slyssa Bonifacio; 6th place - Video Game Design - Tien Tran and Carter Richter; 8th place - Outstanding Student - Christopher Saetia; 9th place - Coding - Tien Tran and Carter Richter; and 10th place - On-Demand Video - Jimmy Vu, Jeffrey Ray and Crawford Bergl.

Perry High School

PHS Students Win State FCCLA Awards

Perry High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members attended the Georgia FCCLA State Leadership Conference March 15 - 17 in Atlanta, Georgia. All 22 Perry High FCCLA students won either first or second place in their category. All of the students now advance to nationals, held this summer in Anaheim, California. These students brought home five gold medals and one silver medal. Congratulations to the following students: 1st place silver medal- Chyna Lester Recycle Redesign, Junior; 1st place gold medal - Ja’la Miller Recycle Redesign, Senior; 1st place gold medal - Lauryn Cernaro and Jaylynn Sivo Food Innovations, Senior; 2nd place gold medal - Renee Hedding and Arthur Buck Sports Nutrition Occupational; 1st place gold medal - Sophia Disarli, Tionna Kendrick, Brianna Brown, Karla Arias, TyKhia

HCCA HOSA Advisers and Students Attend State Leadership Conference

HCCA HOSA Advisers supporting their fellow Advisory Board Member from Life Link of Georgia: Asha Ellen (a GAHOSA State Leadership Conference presenter). She spoke to students about the importance of being an organ and tissue donor. She addressed common fears and myths about being a donor.

HCCA SkillsUSA Students Take Home Medals at Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference

Congratulations to the Houston County Career Academy SkillsUSA Participants. Students competed in various Cosmetology, Fine Furniture, HVAC and Public Safety competitions at the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference.

Joel Fruge’, Houston County High School/ CGTC Criminal Justice Dual Enrollment student, was elected as one of the 2019-2020 SkillsUSA Georgia State Officers.

Minah Way, Perry High School, Ashanti Brown, Veterans High School, & Dee Collins, Perry High School won 1st Place in Cosmetology Nail Design Display.

Maya Webb, Houston County High School, won 2nd Place in Career Exploration Manual (Job Shadow with Houston County Sheriff’s Office/Emergency Communication Center-911).

Bryce Boutwell, Veterans High School, won 1st Place in Woodwork Display.

Ka’Diamond, Northside High School, won 1st place in Career Profile Portfolio (Job Shadow with Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Houston County Sheriff’s Office/Juvenile Division).

Dominic Joerger, Veterans High School, won 3rd Place in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning.

HCCA also had Thania Beltran, Matthew Cox, Breanna Dobin, Jaylia Green, Joshua Jones, Traiquan Jones, Tyler Longbine, Dakota Lutz, D’Nautica Mitchell, Kobe Pitts, Payne Robins, Jordan Rountree, Hunter Signer, and Chase Waters who participated in various categories who did a great job representing Houston County Schools. All students did an awesome job.

HCCA Teaching as a Profession Students Serve as Guest Readers

In conjunction with “Dr. Seuss’ Read Across America” week, the HCCA Teaching As a Profession student teacher interns were guest readers in classrooms at Russell Elementary. The Teaching As a Profession students are in their first year of the program and visit Russell Elementary every Thursday for hands-on opportunities in host classrooms. The Teaching As a Profession pathway gives high school students the opportunity to learn about the teaching field through classroom instruction and internships.

HCCA Teaching as a Profession Students Serve as Ambassadors for Houston County Events

Wednesday, February 27 – Friday, March 1, 2019, the Teaching As a Profession students from the Houston County Career Academy served as ambassadors for the 4th grade Day at the Museum and 3rd grade Market Day. These events were held at the Cary Martin Conference Center. The TAAP students greeted schools as they arrived and assisted the students and teachers throughout the day. The Teaching As a Profession pathway gives high school students the opportunity to learn about the teaching field through classroom instruction and internships.

VHS FCCLA Completes “Special Blankets” School Service Project

Veterans High School

Veterans High FCCLA members decided to do something extra special for some special friends at Veterans High School and made tie blankets for them. Each member participating chose a child and made a blanket that was unique for them. The members spent time on their projects after school and enjoyed making the blankets. The students receiving the blankets were very excited and it showed when presented with the gift. Eight FCCLA members participated in the giving project. Veterans High School is located at 340 Piney Grove Road in Kathleen, Georgia. Dr. Amy Barbour serves as Principal and Dr. Sherry Johnson is the Career Tech Supervisor. Donna Brown is the FCCLA Adviser.

VHS FCCLA Attends Georgia State Conference

Veterans High FCCLA members travelled to Atlanta, Georgia March 15-17, 2019 to attend the Georgia State FCCLA Conference and compete in STAR Events and other competitions. Hannah Schoonover and Hannah Evans competed in the STAR Event Life Event Planning Senior Category and won a silver medal. Ashley Alexander competed in the STAR Event Advocacy Senior Category and won a bronze medal. Sarah Dugger competed in the Creed Speaking competition. VHS Skills USA Students Compete at Region Competition

Veterans High School’s chapter of SkillsUSA became a “Chapter of Excellence” in February. The chapter traveled to Griffin, Georgia on February 1st to participate in the Region 5 competition. The Quiz Bowl team of Landon Kirkland, Noah Woodyard, Bryce Buchanan, Josh Thompson, and Andrew Alarcon (pictured above), placed first, which qualified them to move on to compete at the state level competition in March. Colton Romines placed third with his T-shirt design. The chapter will travel March 21-23, 2019 to compete at the State Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia International Convention Center and Atlanta Marriott Gateway. Ashley Cline is the SkillsUSA Adviser at Veterans High School.

Veterans High School Student Wins SkillsUSA State and Advances to Nationals

The Veterans High School SkillsUSA students participated in the State Leadership Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia March 21-23rd. Morgan Richardson won first place in the Customer Service contest. She now advances to the national competition held in Louisville, Kentucky this June. Veterans High students also competed in Georgia T-shirt Design, Pin Design, Promotional Bulletin Board, Audio/Radio Production, Communication Skills 9th and 10th, and Quiz Bowl. For most of these students, it was their first SkillsUSA competition. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps student excel through educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical classroom education.

NHS Wins State FCCLA Awards and Advances to Nationals

Northside High School

Northside High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students attended the Georgia FCCLA State Leadership Conference March 15 - 17 in Atlanta, Georgia. Fourteen students won either gold or silver medals and eight advanced to the national competition. Eight students received a gold medal for winning second place in the state for their Students Taking Action for Recognition (STAR) event project. They now advance to the National Leadership Conference this summer in Anaheim, California.

Congratulations to: Jared Meck, James Stephens, Riley Green - Promote and Publicize FCCLA; Dekiya Gibson and Aniyah Plummer - Chapter Service Display Occupational Division; Emma Lewis - Chapter Service Display, Senior Division; Abia Kamal - Say Yes to FCS; and Jayla Smith - Chapter in Review Display. Krina Patel is all smiles knowing that she is heading to DECA's International Career Development Conference in Orlando. Krina took the lead in creating the written entry for Northside's school-based enterprise, The Eagle Exchange, as it applied to renew its gold-level certification.

Jared Meck placed 1st in the state for his Online Proficiency test in Consumer Economics. At the opening session of the meeting, LeXandria Richardson was selected to sing the National Anthem. Nicholas Sapp was selected to participate in the State Officer Selection committee where he interviewed the candidates and was part of the selection process. NHS Wins Big at SkillsUSA State Competitions

At the SkillsUSA State Competitions this year, several students from Northside High School competed and did very well. Pictured here are Northside students Rebecca Thomas, Austin Smith, Austin Vu, and Haruto Tanaka as they showcase their medals. Rebecca won 2nd place in the Georgia Brand Design competition, which involved creating uniform designs for a t-shirt, logo, and banner. Austin Smith won 3rd place for his brochure, pictured below. Austin Vu won 2nd place for his Statesman Award Pin Design. Haruto Tanaka, won 3rd place in a 9th / 10th grade competition called Math Concepts.

Northside High FFA Students are STEM in AGtion

Northside High FFA students participated in a one-day STEM day at The University of Georgia. On March 20th FFA students traveled to the University of Georgia where they participated in STEM in AGtion hands on events designed for future agriculture engineers. The students participated in lessons on robotics, entomology, and drone technology. Northside High FFA Officers Gift Time and Resources

The Northside High FFA officer team donated their time and resources to the Georgia Association of Garden Clubs Convention. On March 22nd and 23rd the officers traveled to the Marriot Hotel in Warner Robins, Georgia, where they assisted in setting up for the event and passing out gifts to those who attended. Additionally, they served as advocates for FFA and Agriculture by talking to the adults and youth about Georgia Agriculture and benefits of being a FFA member. The convention’s purpose is to promote common agriculture that anyone can pursue and exciting local members of the community to get more involved. By assisting, they hope to contribute to this goal and get more people involved.

Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator Visits Thomson Middle School

Youth Apprenticeship

On Friday, March 16, 2019, Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator, Sandi Couillard, visited Jody Sikes’ Business and Computer Science classes at Thomson Middle School. During her visit, she spoke to students about the benefits of continuing to take Business/Computer classes into high school and the future job potential at GEICO. GEICO in Macon, Georgia currently employees five students from Houston County in a variety of well-paying jobs and has committed to continue hiring well qualified students into the future.

Perry Middle Students Win FBLA State Awards

Perry Middle School

Perry Middle School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members won six top-10 state awards at the FBLA State Leadership Conference. Eighteen students attended the conference on February 25th in Covington, Georgia. They were accompanied by their chapter Adviser, Diana Phillips.

The state award winners are as follows: Anaya Owens and Isis Swinson – 2nd place – Community Service Project (Chapter Award); Landon Morstad – 5th place – Spreadsheet; Evie Bowman – 8th place, - Multimedia and Webpage Design; Caitlynne Cox – 9th place – Spreadsheet; Anaya Owens – 9th place – Impromptu Speaking; and Carter Bobo, Zoriyah Menefee and Hayden Williamson – 9th place – Critical Thinking. The FBLA conference provides members with an opportunity to compete and network with some of the state’s best students. Georgia FBLA offers close to 100 competitive events at the region, state and national levels. The competitions include objective tests, technical skills tests, written reports, interviews and performances. Prior to the conference, the students went to the Shoppes at River Crossing and had dinner at Wild Wings Café in Macon. Perry Middle School is located at 495 Perry Parkway in Perry, Georgia. FCCLA Members at Perry Middle School Win State Awards

Perry Middle FCCLA members attended FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Gracie Svoboda and Sara Ford competed in the National Programs in Action STAR Events competition. The duo received gold and advance to the National FCCLA STAR Events competition in Anaheim, California. Lakyn Summers created a Digital Delish Dish video recipe and placed 3rd in the state. Mary Carver received silver for her Food Innovations project. Perry Middle FCCLA also received the Middle School Community Service Project State award. Huntington Middle Students Win State FCCLA Awards

Students from Huntington Middle School’s Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the FCCLA State Leadership Conference March 15-17 in Atlanta, Georgia. Huntington Middle’s students brought home two state awards from STAR Event Competitions.

Congratulations to the following students: Bryston Tharpe - 2nd place, Toys that Teach, Junior; Jazmin Heath - silver medal, 3rd place, Recycle and Redesign, Junior.
