BACKGROUND AND CALL TO MINISTRY

I was six years old when I first accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior. I do not wholly remember the night with

great detail. I remember talking with my pastor in my home and being asked questions about what I understood and

whether I knew what it all really meant. I was soon after baptized. I was very young when this occurred and did not have

much of a profound story with my initial conversion. I do know that as I got older I began to just become lukewarm in my

spiritual life. I grew up in a Christian home and went to a Christian school, so I guess I thought I had it covered, but even

though I knew and had experienced God I just did not seem to want to make my relationship with Him the main priority in

my life. As a result when I went off to college I allowed a door to open for sin to enter. I began drinking and even was

arrested one night while I was blackout drunk. During this time there were several occasions I felt God pulling me back to

Him, which is I why I feel I could never cut ties with that relationship. I got into a motorcycle wreck, but even that eye

opening as it was not enough to have me surrender to God. After that wreck a pastor/mentor said to me, "God let you live

for a reason. What was that reason?" I struggled with this question for a semester, and during the Christmas break

December of 2010, God intervened in my life. I was reading the Bible and the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan, and I felt

God burden me with the way I had been living my life. I was by myself in my living room and could not stop crying and

knelt and prayed. I could not go on without having Him as the head of my life and seeking a relationship with Him that I

had let falter for so long. There was an immediate impact and could no longer drink or smoke or do things or hangout with

the same people I used to want to. I have since been seeking the Lord and growing in this relationship never wanting to

become lukewarm or rebelling toward Him again. As I look back on it and sometimes want to determine at which point I

was saved or converted I struggle with that school of thought. I remember in high school and middle school having more

of a relationship and would have definitely called myself a Christian. Then some might ask how I could have lived in

rebellion the way I did if I had been converted at the age of six. I believe I was saved and converted when I was six. I also

believe that my level and depth of understanding was that of a six year old and grew to some extent as I did, but not

where it needed to be when I went to college. In 2010 when I was 21 I felt I reached that deeper level of understanding

about how my relationship with God was supposed to be. Though I regret the path I took to come to this understanding I

believe God was watching over me and sought to bring me back closer to Him.

I had several times in my life that I felt a call to ministry leadership and because of the state of rebellion I was in I

ignored those times. Once was through a pastor at a college ministry. I talked to him briefly after a sermon he had

preached and he got my number. He later left me a voicemail message explaining how he felt God was going to use me

and had something in store for me to do. I ignored this and wanted to keep on living my way. After a motorcycle wreck I

had a local pastor whom had been a mentor to me in high school came to me and asked questions about how I should

have died and God let me live, why was this and what for? These questions though I tried to ignore them really stuck with

me. After God intervened in my life to draw me closer to Him in 2010, in the winter of 2011 with a semester left to

graduate I felt an impression from God that I should go into ministry leadership. I wrestled with this intently and talked to

many pastors about what I felt was God calling me into ministry. After graduating with a degree in I.T. in May of 2012, I

went to my home church and began an internship and also fulfilled the role of middle school pastor under the youth

pastor. I have felt that this call has been affirmed many times and the youth pastor has given me opportunities to lead and

fulfill that calling such as leading retreats and preaching at different opportunities. I cannot describe the joy and fulfillment I

fill in this role and feel this has affirmed my call. On a mission trip to Uganda during the summer of 2012 my pastor gave

me the opportunity to preach the Gospel to the village. I felt unprepared and was very nervous, but God led me to a

passage to preach from and a passage of comfort and promise to alleviate much of the fear I had. I recognize a call has

many different meanings, but “divine call” I would define as being an impression from God that changes the

circumstances of your life and only another “divine call” should change it. I have not come to this conclusion on my own

but through reading several books on how God calls as I was afraid and confused I had misunderstood my call. Through

my conversations with pastors and the opportunity I’ve had at my church and through school I feel God has affirmed my

call many times.
