Davidson In Review This Week at Davidson (October 10th through October 14th)… PTA Box Tops Classroom Collection Thank you for collecting your Box Tops for Education!! The classroom competition ran from October 3rd through October 14th. The top class in each grade level will receive a popsicle party and an extra recess. Those classroom teachers will also receive a giant spirit stick to display on their door for bragging rights! Winners will be announced in the near future. College Spirit Day Wednesday, October 12th! KDE held the second Da- vidson College Spirit Day on Wednesday, October 12th. Students and staff wore their favorite college spirit wear in support for higher education. This week Mrs. Tang and Mrs. Cowan wore their burnt orange and white and proud- ly shared some interesting facts about the University of Texas. During the an- nouncements they told stu- dents about “Bevo” the Longhorn mascot, demonstrated how to make the UT Hook ‘em Horns, had a little UT Cheerleader and Mrs. Cowan even played the UT alma mater “Eyes of Texas” on her flute!. Thank you for a fun and interesting glimpse into the University of Texas. End of 1st Grading Cycle

Friday, October 14th was the end of the 1st grading cycle. The

2nd grading cycle will begin on Monday, October 17th.

Watch My Scarecrow Grow

Kindergarten students are participating in the li-

brary reading incentive program, “Watch My

Scarecrow Grow” which began on October 11th.

The primary objective of this program is to pro-

mote reading and a love for books. To complete

this program, each child must read or have read to

him/her a total of 6 books. Each time your child

reads a book or has a book read to him/her, par-

ents will fill out a ticket that will be sent home in

Tuesday folders. Have your child give the tickets

to the library staff. In return, the student will be given the corre-

sponding picture to place on his/her scarecrow in the Kindergar-

ten classroom. When their scarecrows are complete, the student

will receive a “Watch My Scarecrow Grow” spirit stick. Read-

ing tickets will be accepted through Tuesday, November 22nd.

PTA Spirit Night at Spring Creek BBQ

PTA hosted October Spirit Night at Spring Creek BBQ on Octo-

ber 5th. Congratulations to Ms. Williamson’s class, Ms. Noch-

lin’s class and Ms. Dostal’s class for having the highest percent-

age of participants! Each student in these classes will receive a

free t-shirt, cup and gift card! Spring Creek BBQ generously

donates a portion of the evenings profits back to KDE. THANK

YOU Spring Creek Barbeque!!

PTA Cookie Dough Fundraiser Kick Off!

Davidson PTA kicked off their fall fundraiser on Friday, Octo-

ber 7th with an energetic assembly. Afterwards, fundraiser

packets, including catalogs, were sent home with students. Or-

dering is easy and there are so many great products to choose

from. It’s the perfect opportunity to pick-up some delicious

treats and gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Students have

the opportunity to win some fun prizes and profits made through

this fundraiser directly benefit the students and staff at KDE.

Little Free Library in Memory of Angela Iliescu

Opening Soon!

Mrs. Matovich, our KDE Librarian, is excited to announce that

the Little Free Library that was built in memory of Angela

Iliescu (A former student at KDE) is finally complete! Mrs.

Fortenberry, our KDE Art Teacher, did a fabulous job painting

the library with a few of Angela’s favorite things like butter-

flies and cats. This library will be placed outside of the play-

ground at the Pine Mill Ranch Clubhouse across the street

from KDE. Stay tuned for the date of the grand opening cele-

bration and dedication. If you would like to donate any good

used or new children’s books to be added to the Little Free

Library, you may bring them to the KDE Library. You can

learn more about Little Free Libraries on the website

What’s Happening at Davidson

Week of October 17th to October 21st…

Library Pumpkin Patch Begins

The KDE

Library is

hosting a

“Pumpkin

Patch” for our

KDE families from October 17th through October 21st. Why

the Library? It is a “Book Character” pumpkin patch! That’s

right! We want to see what you can do with a little paint, a

little fabric, or other craft supplies to transform an ordinary

orange pumpkin into your favorite character from a book! For

example: use a little red paint to make Clifford or some yellow

yarn to make Goldilocks. We’re looking for pumpkins that are

created, not carved or punctured. The pumpkin characters will

be on display in the library. Stop by and check out all the

pumpkin creations! Have fun and happy decorating! Every

one who enters is a winner!!!

Early Release Day Friday, October

21st

Friday, October 21st is an early release day for

Katy ISD. Davidson students will be dismissed from KDE at

12:40PM. No lunch visitors are permitted at KDE on early

release days since all lunch tables are in use for classes.

ESL Orientation Night: Thursday, October 20th

Everything you need to know about English as a Second Lan-

guage! The ESL teachers would like to invite all parents of

ESL students to attend our Orientation. Join us on Thursday,

October 20th from 5:00PM—6:00PM at Davidson Elementary.

We will be explaining our ESL program and sharing resources

for helping your child at home. Also we will explain the ESL

placement and exit procedures, in addition to other common

questions: How is a student’s English pro-

gress measured? Can an ESL student also

be in GT classes? What are accommoda-

tions for ESL students? We hope to see

you there!

First Ever KDE Mother & Son Night Out Friday,

October 21st

The KDE PTA is proud to host the first Mother/Son Game Night

at Inflatable Katy on Friday, October 21st. There will be pizza,

drinks, dessert, unlimited jumping, putt-putt, air hockey and more!

The deadline to purchase tickets is Monday, October 17th. To

register go to www.kdepta.org/shop. This will be a closed event;

meaning only sons that currently attend KDE and their mothers

are invited. All dads, sisters, and little dragons will not be admit-

ted. If mom is not available, grandmas, aunts, or any female rela-

GT/Challenge Services (1st to 4th Grades)

Parent letters will go home to all 1st – 4th grade students in Tues-

day folders on November 8th. Parent Checklists will be due by

December 9th. There will be a GT awareness meeting for grades

1st-4th at the Educational Support Complex in room 1200 from

7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on November 14, 2016.

Katy ISD Maker Faire Saturday, November 5th

Katy ISD is holding a Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, November

5th from 9:00AM –12:00PM, at the Robert R. Shaw Center for

STEAM for students in grades 4-8. This is a family friendly

event to MAKE, build, learn, tinker, connect, craft, play, invent

and be inspired! It is a come and go event with many activities

to choose from including: Straw rockets,

coding, blanket making, green screen video,

origami and more! See the attached flyer

Davidson PTA has begun the sale of the 2016-2017 KDE Year-

Book Character Dress Up Day and Parade coming

Monday, October 31st

We are excited to announce that KDE will have our 3rd Annual

Book Character Dress-Up Day on Monday, October 31st. On this

date, students will come to school dressed up as a character from a

favorite book. The character will be from a book your child has

read by themselves or with an adult. Students will participate in a

school-wide character parade and an in-class share activity. Par-

ents are invited to come to the gym to view the school-wide pa-

rade. Raptor badges are not required for parents coming to only

watch the parade because parents will ENTER and EXIT

through the gym at the end of the parade. Parents will be pro-

vided a place in the gym to view all classes as the students parade

in their book character costumes through the building. We will

begin the parade at 8:45AM. We look forward to an exciting

day!! Please see the attached flyers for more details.

Katy Robotics Academy Begins

Wednesday, October 25th After School Katy Robotics Academy Fall session begins at KDE

on Wednesday, October 25th. We are excited to announce that

our 1st through 5th grade students will have a wonderful oppor-

tunity to learn computer programming through LEGO robotics this

year! There will be two 6-week sessions, one in the Fall and one in

the Spring.

PTA Fall Parties Schedule Monday, October 31st

Parents are welcome to attend the KDE Fall Parties on Monday,

October 31st. Each grade level party will be held in the Gym

this year. The party schedule is as follows:

5th Grade: 10:00AM—10:45AM

4th Grade: 10:50AM—11:35AM

1st Grade: 12:10PM—12:55PM

Kinder: 1:00PM—1:45PM

2nd Grade 1:50 PM—2:35PM

3rd Grade 2:40PM—3:25PM

Visitors will be required to have a Raptor badge for this

event. In order to pre-Raptor for the party click on:

ument and a Raptor badge will be pre-printed and awaiting your

arrival allowing you to skip the long lines! Parents that have

past and wish to attend the party, we encourage you to stop by

any day of the week from 8:00AM until 4:25 PM to have your

driver’s license scanned into the Raptor Visitor system so that

you may be pre-Raptored for future events. (*Note- If you have

had your driver’s license scanned as a VOLUNTEER, you will

need to have it re-scanned into the VISITOR part of the system.)

No Lunch Visitors Monday, October 31st Due to the increased activity in the building for fall party day

and limited parking space there will be no lunch visitors permit-

ted on Monday, October 31st.

KDE Fall Carnival Saturday, November 5th!

The KDE PTA invites you to the second annual Fall Carnival on

Saturday, November 5th from 2:00PM-6:00PM at Davidson

Elementary. They have lots of activities planned including doz-

ens of games, inflatables, activities, and more. The entire com-

munity is welcome to attend. You may purchase a wristband for

unlimited play on all of the inflatables as well as individual

game & activity tickets that can be redeemed to play carnival

games and win fun

prizes from the

prize booth. Wrist-

bands and tickets

will be available

for purchase at the

carnival.

A View Into Elementary Instruction

A new link for parents of elementary students has been added to

the new District Parents site (http://www.katyisd.org/parents/)

under the tab titled “CURRICULUM.” The title of the link is A

VIEW INTO ELEMENTARY INSTRUCTION and contains videos

describing balanced mathematics and balanced literacy, Pre-K

through Grade Five mathematical instructional videos on a variety

of topics, a sample Intermediate Word Study Lesson sequence,

parent resources for Word Study and Fine Motor Skills/

Handwriting, and access to Elementary Coordinators for parent

questions regarding instructional videos. We’re excited to share

that many of the videos are direct from our own KDE webpage!

TIP: Technology Information for Parents Instructional Technology has created an informational site for

parents, called T.I.P. This site contains instructional videos for

parents on a variety of KISD applications such as Canvas,

MyKaty Cloud, Office 365, technology outages as well as infor-

mation on Digital Responsibility to name a few. The Division of

Technology as well as other departments will continue to add

information to this site to inform parents of the digital tools that

KDE Absence Reporting Form

Davidson Elementary offers the opportunity for parents/guardians

to report their child’s absence via the campus webpage on the

district website. Visit: http://www.katyisd.org/campus/KDE/

Pages/ABSENCE-REPORTING.aspx. You will be able to fill out

the form indicating your child’s absence for that day’s absence

and submit it with a few clicks of your mouse. The information

Celebrate Your Child’s Birthday on

KDE’s Marquee Would you like to celebrate your child’s birthday on the KDE

Marquee? You may now purchase a week of special birthday

wishes for your child! Due to space, a maximum of ten birthdays

each week will be displayed on a first come, first serve basis. The

week will run from Friday to Friday. Pick up a Birthday Marquee

Request Form, choose your week, and send it in to school with

your child.
