Read the journal. Follow the directions.

A Sleepy Animal by Rosa Gomez

Today I saw a funny-looking animal. It was an armadillo. An armadillo has plates made of bone on most of its body. This animal has small eyes and a long, pointed nose. An armadillo does not see well, so it uses its sense of smell to find food. With its large, sharp claws, an armadillo can dig for ants and other insects. An armadillo also uses its claws to dig a hole for sleeping. It sleeps for almost 16 hours a day. That is a very long time!

1. Write the author’s name.

2. Underline the sentence that describes an armadillo’s body.

3. Circle the word below that tells what an armadillo uses to find food.

eyes nose

4. Circle the words in the story that tell why an armadillo digs.

5. Write a sentence that tells why you think the author wrote this story.

Home Activity Your child read a journal entry about the armadillo and told why the author wrote it. Ask your child to choose a special day or event in his or her life and write about it. Then have your child tell why he or she chose to write about that day or event.

Comprehension Compare and Contrast DVD•107

Read each story. Answer the questions to compare and contrast the stories.

Rainbow Crow (Native American tale) Long ago, Rainbow Crow had feathers of beautiful colors. It was very cold and the animals were freezing. So Rainbow Crow flew up to Sky Spirit to ask him to make it warm and save the animals. Sky Spirit gave Rainbow Crow a stick of fire. Rainbow Crow headed home with the stick. But on the way, the fire burned his feathers, and the smoke hurt his throat. He gave the people fire and it kept them warm. But now he had black feathers and a harsh caw.

Papagayo: The Mischief Maker (South American tale) A parrot named Papagayo lived in the jungle. It was very hot, and many animals wanted to sleep during the day. Papagayo made noise all day long. His loud caws bothered the sleeping animals. These night animals used moonlight to look for food. One night, a mean creature started to eat the moon. Papagayo stopped the creature. From then on, the animals no longer cared that their friend was noisy.

1. What character trait describes both Rainbow Crow and

Papagayo?

2. How are the actions of both Rainbow Crow and Papagayo alike?

3. How is the setting for “Rainbow Crow” different from the setting for “Papagayo”?

Home Activity Your child compared and contrasted two folk tales. With your child, write a description of two animal characters from favorite stories. Ask your child to tell how the characters are alike and different.
