New Pastor Named:
If you had not heard, Pastor Steve Bird is retiring at the end of June. Virginia UM Con-ference Bishop Young Jin Cho has announced that Rev. Bruce Carper will be coming to DUMC in July.
Bruce is presently serving his sixth appointment and is in his 26th year in ministry as an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church. For the past four years he has served as pastor of Main Street United Methodist in Emporia.
He grew up all over the state of Virginia being the son of a Methodist preacher. His fa-ther served Mount Jackson Charge in the 1950’s. Educated at UVA , Bruce worked as a chemist/technical director for 17 years in the Tidewater area.
Before returning to his Methodist roots, Bruce was active for eight years and served as a Deacon in a large independent church in Virginia Beach. From there he answered the call to preach and attended Oral Roberts University, then an approved UMC seminary. He and his wife Debby, who is retired from Verizon, have five grown children and three grand-children between them. They enjoy the beach, beach music, and shag dancing.
-Terry Stockner, Chairman
Staff/Parish Relations Committee
Rev. Bruce Carper &
his wife, Debby, will
come to Dayton in
early July.

Sunday School & Bible Study
Women's Bible Study will meet April 12th at 7:00 pm in the home of Libby Lambert, 275 Westview Street. All ladies are invited to join us for fellowship and faith-learning as we discuss another chapter in the book, “The Gospel Ac-cording to Dr. Seuss” by James W. Kemp. This
month is "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" and "The Sneetches". Suter’s Bible Class is beginning a new study: "Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn't Say" by Adam Hamilton.
A synopsis of “Half Truths”: Everything happens for a reason. God helps those who help themselves. God won’t give you more than you can handle. God said it, I believe it, that settles it. Love the sinner, hate the sin.
They are simple phrases. They sound Christian—like something you might find in the Bible. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join in searching for the whole truth by comparing common Christian clichés to the message and ministry of Jesus.

Dear Dayton Family,
It has taken me a while to get to where I felt I could write this letter to you, our church family.
I want to thank you for so many things. About 9 years ago now my mom, Nancy Lickey, decided
that she was going to move from a city where she had grown up and raised her family to live clos-
er to her grandchildren. Ray and I were trying to move from Staunton to the Harrisonburg area
and my brother had just obtained a position at Bridgewater College.
I was incredibly surprised by this because although dad had passed away several years before
and she had sold their animal hospital, she still had family, a strong church family, and some very
strong friendships in the area. But I guess I will understand more when I am a Grandma. In hind-
sight I am so glad that she came, she knew then like I know now that time with family is precious.
She also knew her close friends would stay close and that she would find new ones wherever she
went. One place she went looking for friends was where she had always found them in her past,
she went to church. She visited many United Methodist Churches in the area before she came to
Dayton. But once she came to Dayton, she found people who were welcoming and willing to let
her in and be a part of their church family. Mom enjoyed the many friendships she made here
and her ability to be a part of the ministry of this church. Thank you all for being a welcoming
community.
Mom had an incredible faith and an ability to always look for the positive in every day and
everyone. She always encouraged her children and grandchildren to always look for heart happy
moments in every day, I hope that each of you will also take this message and share it with your
own families.
Thank you to all of you for your love, prayers, cards, food and encouragement during mom’s
battle against cancer and following her passing. I also want to thank all of you who helped during
her service, in the parking lot, and especially in the kitchen where she loved to be helping (and
leading).
Love in Christ,
Stephanie Lilly and Family
For 46 years, we have celebrated Earth
Day on April 22. The movement gives
voice to an emerging consciousness,
channeling human energy toward envi-
ronmental issues.
Earth Day is worth celebrating as people of faith. Our
United Methodist Social Principles draw attention to
our relationship with God’s creation. “All creation is
the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in
which we use and abuse it.”
The General Board of Church and Society challenges
us to put our faith into action, especially as responsible
stewards of creation. In many ways, we can take re-
sponsibility for how we live in God’s world and en-
courage the people of The United Methodist Church to
act on issues that have an environmental impact.
The Earth Day website invites us: “This Earth Day,
let’s get really big stuff done for our planet. What are
we waiting for? The time is now.”
Our apportioned gifts to the World Service Fund help
the General Board of Church and Society inspire us to
care for God’s creation.
Every. Single. Day.
-Pastor Steve
In April, while many of us are whining about paying taxes, take time to remember and pray for those that are unemployed.
