WHEN MAGIC HAPPENSInterior Designer Louis Shuster Channels A Latin Vibrancy ToFulfill One Couple’s Wish For Their New Estate In Boca Raton


“Art is an important part of the clients’ lives,”interior designer Louis Shuster says. Foyerworks by Brazilian painters Manabu Mabeand Gonçalo Ivo announce that aesthetic. Inthe foreground, the wood console is one of apair designed by Oscar Niemeyer, while FransKracjberg’s red wall sculpture catches theeye above a glass-topped console beyond.


INTERIOR DESIGNER LOUIS SHUSTER RECALLS ONEof the first conversations with his client. It took place after the homeowner’swife saw one of the designer’s homes featured in Florida Design and shewatched a video of Shuster describing his work.

“She has a strong intuition that you are to be the one,” the husband says.A week later, Shuster began to put together a team to transform an existingestate in the uber-exclusive enclave of St. Andrews in Boca Raton, Fla., intoa home for the Brazilian couple, their two young children and several live-instaff. While maintaining a sprawling residence in South America designed bya world-famous architect, the couple wished to bring the same Latin vibrancyand luxury to St. Andrews.

Strength and luminosity are apparent in the soaringliving room. From behind a quartz facing, a panel slidesto conceal the bar. Across the room, the 10-foot-longhigh-tech art by Carlos Cruz-Diez seems to vibratewithin its niche. Even the zigzag floor lamp fromPhillips Collection, and the custom chandelier thatdesigner Gage Hartung created by cobbling togetherLucite slatting, rock crystal and linen are works of art.

The designer’s first call was toarchitects Jay Colestock and MarkMuir. “I was totally overwhelmedby the views,” Colestock says. “Afan-shaped property set on one-and-a-half acres overlookingsweeping golf course greens … Icouldn’t wait to pick up my penciland paper.” But problems wereembedded in the 1980s-builtexisting structure. “It simply couldnot accommodate what we wantedto build,” he says. The owners’quick decision to move forwardwith a totally new home openedthe floodgates of inspiration andthe magic began.

Colestock created a thumbnailsketch of a 13,300-square-foot,two-story home situated toembrace the spectacular views. “Ikept three principles in mind,” thearchitect says. “The needs of thisparticular family and how theylike to live; the incredible viewsand setting; and the thing they arepassionate about — art. I neededto design around an importantcontemporary collection.”

As Colestock refined his blue-prints for the now cleared lot,Shuster and his lead designer,Gage Hartung began the first oftwo trips to Brazil. “Steepingoneself in the life of the peoplefor whom you are designing a

home is a wonderful privilege,” Hartung says. “Seeing the colors they love, the texturesthey treasure, how they move and relax in their spaces is invaluable.” Though selectpieces of art and furnishings from their current home were chosen for St. Andrews,the São Paulo Design Center offered most of the pieces in the exotic woods theowners loved.

Soon, builder Terry Cudmore and landscape architect Krent Wieland came aboard.“We gave ourselves a 14-month timeline,” Cudmore says. In the end, 12 months later,the owners moved in, loving everything they saw.



Throughout the home, natural woods,Ledgestone-faced columns and slabs oflimestone give the feeling of a resort.

Drama intrigues from the first moment. Against the softness of Wieland’s date palmoasis, Colestock massed blocks of rectangles, punctured walls with rectilinear shapes,and then settled the tension with a palette of soft grays for the Ledgestone columnsand concrete-tiled roof. Four individual, steel-faced walnut-paneled garages flank thehome’s central entry styled with a mighty arched trellis that feels as if the curtain isabout to go up. And indeed it does.

Just inside, Hartung positions 21-foot-high flat rosewood columns on either side ofthe entry to narrow the aperture and allow the main social area’s impact to dazzle.

And high above, the entry foyer’sfloated rosewood panel and theliving room’s 26-foot-high vaultedceiling make for the majesty of amodern cathedral.

On glowing rosewood panelsand gallery-white walls, colorsplashes from every corner. “Eachpiece of art was photographed andmeasured,” Hartung says. “We knewwhere each work would live beforeit arrived.”

Linear striations develop in theliving room, where slatted panelslining the bar and a Tai Ping arearug define the motif Hartung usesthroughout. Clad in Bergamo’s palelinen, the Berman Rossetti sofasjoin casual armchairs to center arare Amazonian wood cocktailtable designed by Ruy Ohtake thatis “shaped like the Shuster ‘S,’” theowner quips.

As if pulled from the hues in thedining room’s art, the multi-squaredarea rug from Amir Rug Gallerycontinues the color-block motif.The table’s warm caramels ofBrazilian cedar wood resonate inhue with the hand-blown glass“canoes” that suspend, mobile-like,from above.

“For me,” Hartung says, “thebiggest challenge was positioningfurniture and defining usage areasin the outdoor family room.” Withaccordion doors, a massive Vikingbarbeque, and a fireplace along oneside, Hartung floated seating anddining areas in the center of theroom. barstools pull up to a custom teak-stained bar thatallows guests to concentrate on the thick, SouthAmerican steaks grilling on the barbeque.

Opening out of the white of quartzite andwarmth of rosewood, the limestone-flooredkitchen merges with a family-sized breakfast areaand the family room beyond. A wine wall withroom for over 400 labels, hidden cabinetry and arich Calacatta marble backsplash underline theluxury in each kitchen detail.

The master suite features nearly 600 square feetof private dressing rooms, plus a private sittingroom off of the sleeping area. Beneath the steppedand coffered ceiling, the headboard wall is facedwith an embrace of red eucalyptus. A SergioRodriguez chair and ottoman in creamy leather sit

“Sometimes the chemistry is just right for all the members of the team,”Wieland says. “In this case, the homeowner, with his wonderful attention todetail, was a key player. Then for everyone — the magic just happened.”

As the homeowners now relax around the glass-tiled pool, ingeniously designed toprevent small children or dogs from inadvertent curiosity, their new American homeseems complete. With a balcony playground keeping the small ones busy, the coupleallows their mind’s eye to drift along the marble-faced blade walls of the pool andbeyond. Magic becomes tangible it seems … American-made with a samba beat.
