DC resistivity surveys and data

n  Inject current. n  Measure potentials. n  Potentials depend upon the distribution of subsurface

resistivity. n  Resistivity of geologic materials depends on:

q  rock type, q  minerals, q  porosity and fluid type.

Electrical Conductivity/Resistivity

• porosity; • hydraulic permeability, how pores are interconnected; • moisture content; • concentration of dissolved electrolytes; • temperature and phase of pore fluid; • amount and composition of colloids (clay content).

Remember: Resistivity (Ohm/m) = 1/Conductivity (S/m)

Basic Idea

Circuit Earth circuit

I current put in by the transmitter R is the resistance of the circuit V is a measured voltage (V=IR) For earth system: put the transmitter probes anywhere Measure the voltage between two other electrodes

R

All geophysical systems use four electrodes

Some important elements

n  Currents need to couple with the target

n  Charges will exist on horizontal layers as well as on buried targets

n  The voltage depends upon the location and separation of the potential electrodes.

Data acquisition: Sounding (GPG 3b) n  Current penetratation depends upon current

electrode separation

n  To estimate conductivity directly beneath a point q  expand current electrodes symmetrically q  measure potentials

n  Compute apparent resistivity (Apparent resistivity is not

the true resistivity)

Data acquisition: Sounding

n  Acquiring data symmetrically about a point is referred to as a “sounding”

Data acquisition: Profiling

n  A particular electrode geometry moved laterally is referred to as “profiling”

n  This can help see lateral changes in conductivity

Putting it all together

n  Generally we want to see in depth and laterally

n  Combine sounding and profiling

n  Create an array geometry q  expand it (sounding) q  move it (profiling)

Pseudosections can rarely be interpeted geologically

n  Remember each point in the pseudosection is the result of charges distributed in a volume

n  It is now common to invert these data

Page 21: DC Resistivity · 2017-09-07 · DC resistivity surveys and data n Inject current. n Measure potentials. n Potentials depend upon the distribution of subsurface resistivity. n Resistivity

What is Inversion?

Inversion processing

Model Inversion estimates Earth models based upon data and prior knowledge.

?

Data

Measurements over the Earth are data.

Page 22: DC Resistivity · 2017-09-07 · DC resistivity surveys and data n Inject current. n Measure potentials. n Potentials depend upon the distribution of subsurface resistivity. n Resistivity

Given: - Field observations - Error estimates - Ability to forward model - Prior knowledge

Choose a suitable misfit criterion

Design model objective function

Discretize the Earth

Perform inversion

Evaluate results Iterate

Interpret preferred model(s)
