DCWW IGLOO:

Overview

Over the last 3 years, Welsh Water have been on a journey of BIM development. As part of this journey, Welsh Water have invested in a collaborative office space. A completely wraparound system that has provided a facility for virtual site visits and design development. The technology has also aided the company in the effective delivery of its capital program.

Key Benefits Found to Date

Reduction of site visits reducing Health & Safety risks and providing notable cost savings. Better visualisation of capital works and reduction in the need for rework. Virtual pipe route assessment and traffic management planning. Improved ALM’s, HAZOP’s and HAZCON’s.

In contrast to Virtual Reality headsets. The Igloo enables entire teams to work collaboratively with everyone viewing the same thing at the same time.


• Unity 3D – This was the initial platform used. Platform primarily used for game creation. Allows interactive visualisations of building constructions in 3D.

• Revizto – Now the preferred platform. Revizto provides a simple process allowing the easy exporting and sharing of Project Models and Federated BIM Models into the Igloo. Enables all 3D models, object data & linked files to be projected to the wider team.

• Navisworks – Enables the Capital Delivery Alliance Partners to view Integrated Models & Data with key stakeholders for better project outcomes.

• Revit – Specialist BIM software enabling the production of data rich project models.

• Civil 3D – 3D modelling software used primarily for the creation of Infrastructure Project Models.

• Dwr Cymru are continuing to develop their use of BIM.

• ISO 55000 Asset Management Accredited & working to integrate BIM processes.

• DCWW EIR’s & AIR’s being developed in conjunction with AMP 6 Alliance Partner’s –Expected to be ready for use in AMP 7.

Digital by Default

• 95% of projects are being developed using Revit.

• 2D & 3D information stored within the project model – The Single Source of Truth.

• Digital Workflows developed for Markups, Checking & Approval of project deliverables.

• Greater involvement of construction teams and Client Operatives in the design process provides design efficiencies.

• Constructing directly from the project model now being trialed – Reducing the need for 2D deliverable production.



The Switch – Better Technology for Better Designs

• MMB initiative to move towards the use of more advanced design & visualization tools.

• MMB look to reap the benefits of using these advanced tools.

• Project teams delivering on more advanced and standard tools will realize the efficiencies in delivering projects.

• MMB will be better able to collaborate within our global teams and partner organizations.

• Upskilling MMB staff on these tools is preparing us for working in a more data and information centric environment unlocking future benefits.



Data Exchange

• Project CDE workflows developed to align with BS:1192.

• Synchronized Model & Database form a basic ‘Digital Twin’ of the Asset allowing for the development of intelligent infrastructure.



Data Exchange

• Data Rich project models, synchronization of IP&ID and commissioning data into the Revit model – Models can then form the As Built for the next AMP period, thus providing efficiencies and cost savings.



Project Collaboration

• Revizto exports used for regular Design Team Reviews, Access Lifting & Maintenance Reviews (ALM’s), coupled with early site operative feedback into the design process.

• Revizto also being trialed for collaborative issue tracking between site and design teams during construction.



Site Operations Early Design Input

• MMB Wales using simple 3D model exports into immersive technology to allow early input into the design development from Client site operatives.

• Early site input allows an informed, buildable and fit for operation design to be developed more efficiently.



Project Animus VR Experience

• Project Animus – Mott MacDonald initiative that aims to bridge the gap between simple add-in solutions and highly functional, bespoke crafted experiences delivering high value immersive applications.


Standard Content Service:

Replacing the DCC – Expected by 2019

• The Standard Content Service (SCS) is a foundational service for standardised technical delivery across Mott MacDonald, supporting time and cost efficiencies, as well as improved quality.

• The SCS is a key means to capitalise on the digital knowledge generated as our primary output, enabling us to deliver better services to our clients.

• The SCS is built on three fundamental elements:

• Governance – all guidance and procedures related to management of the SCS.

• Content – the knowledge assets curated and served up through the SCS.

• Technology – the various technologies used to implement the SCS.



SCS Technology

• Ease-of-use is the primary consideration for the SCS technology.

• Technology is an enabler of the SCS, not a definer. It will be technology agnostic, choosing the right tools for the job.

• The SCS will constantly seek to improve the technology platform used to deliver the service. The technology architecture will deliver short-term benefits while paving the way for longer-term sophistication.

• Interoperability is key, allowing for replacement of technology building blocks as and when required, and to interface with other Mott MacDonald systems.



Structure and Collaboration

• Delivery of the SCS requires collaboration across the following groups:

• The SCS team, who undertake the day-to-day running of the SCS.

• The Group Practices, the members of which are the key users of the service.

• The SCS Advisory group, including nominated members of the BIM, GIS and Data Science practices, who provide steering to the SCS management team.

• Mott MacDonald IT, who will provide support for the technology platform.
