NLOS FOR SMALL CELL BACKHAUL

WHAT WE HEAR:

“Unlicensed Bands are not good”

“You can’t predict how NLOS will operate”

“I cant afford to have multiple crews install the site infrastructure”

“I need XX capacity with latency targets and NLOS can’t give that reliably”

WHAT HAVE WE SEEN IN THE FIELD?

DE-BUNKING THE MYTHS UNLICENSED OPERATION

MYTH: -  Can’t use unlicensed because of interference

REALITY: -  5.8G NLOS successfully deployed in NYC and SF

-  Unlicensed works in congested areas

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED: -  The use of the following techniques help

interference migration in NLOS radios: -  Automatic Adaptive Rate

-  Forward Error Correction (FEC)

-  Advanced Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ)

-  Automatic Channel Selection (ACS)

-  Beam Forming and Smart Antenna

DE-BUNKING THE MYTHS PREDICTABLITY

MYTH: -  NLOS is un-predictable

REALITY: -  Results from a recent NYC deployment show

NLOS performance can be predicted with good accuracy

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED: -  Proper mapping and planning tools are

essential to achieving accurate results

DE-BUNKING THE MYTHS DEPLOYMENT CHALLENGES

MYTH: -  NLOS systems are difficult to install and align

properly

REALITY: -  Today’s NLOS Systems are designed to provide

easy installation, done by a single team for both the small cell and backhaul

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED: -  Smart and Beam Forming antennas make

installation easy

-  Power Over Ethernet on the small cell or router allow powering of the NLOS radio without another external device to hang on pole or mount on wall

DE-BUNKING THE MYTHS PERFORMANCE

MYTH: -  NLOS Systems cannot meet LTE Small Cell

performance requirements

REALITY: -  Today’s NLOS systems can provide over 250Mbps

of capacity with acceptable latency

-  Tier 1 MNOs have started deployment for LTE applications

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED: -  MNOs require ~100Mbps of capacity

-  New NLOS radios capable of ~1G of capacity -  Capacity & latency determined to be acceptable

in customer trials
