Speaker Professor Robert (Bob) Gilbert

Awarded the RACI 2007 Leighton Memorial Medal In recognition of eminent services to chemistry in Australia

• Professor Robert G (Bob) Gilbert is Research Professor in the Centre for Nutrition and Food

Science, University of Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and of the RACI, is author of 340 papers, 4 patents, and 2 books (on unimolecular reactions and on emulsion polymerisation). His research interests cover a wide range of polymer science, with recent emphasis on starch as a polymer.

Abstract

• For a polymer scientist, starch presents a challenge: while a simple homopolymer of glucose, it is highly branched, and one can identifying has six levels of structural complexity, from nm to mm. Starch comprises half our food energy, and structure-property relations are needed to improve our nutrition with regard to diabetes and obesity, now reaching epidemic levels. This talk will be on research to stop this evening's dinner killing you.

Registration Forms are available from the Qld Branch Office. Please return completed forms, with payment, to Ruth Meaney (RACI Qld Branch Coordinator) by email, fax, or mail by THURSDAY 12TH JUNE 2008 for catering purposes. Website of the Week This is a new section of the newsletter where we will review a useful or interesting website that one of our members will have recommended. (Opinions expressed in this article are not those of the RACI as a whole, rather the author of the article)

This week we look at

This is quite a fun, and innovative website – yet at the same time quite informative. The Naked Scientists are a media-savvy group of physicians and researchers from Cambridge University who use radio, live lectures, and the Internet to strip science down to its bare essentials, and promote it to the general public. The first attracted a wide UK audience over the Radio Waves - but it has been their interactive website and great use of pod casting that has seen then gain an international audience. Pods casts include chemistry related projects such as pods run on lemons or growing crystals on string. There are over more general science related articles – I enjoyed the ballistics investigation – how much fat would a belly require to stop a bullet hitting your vital organs- (at least 72cm apparently!). Very interesting indeed Edwina Hine (NSW Branch Coordinator)

When: Tuesday 27th May 2008 Venue: University of Western Sydney

Campbelltown Campus (CR 5, Building 22) Programme: 6.00 Wine & Cheese 6.30 Special Guest Speaker: Professor Thomas Maschmeyer

(University of Sydney) The world is standing at the technological threshold of a revolution that is driven by the need for truly sustainable (industrial) processes, both in the production of chemicals as well as in the generation of fuels and power. At current rates of resource usage, if a world population were to operate with Australian standards of living, it would require between 4 – 6 planets. In addition, concomitant greenhouse gas emissions would have a dramatic impact on the world’s climate. This talk will outline how one might be able to address some of the basic problems associated with these issues from a chemical perspective. The talk will not only be directed at a general audience and canvas aspects of ‘the bigger picture’, but it will also cover very recent research results from our group in the area of photocatalytic splitting of water with sunlight to create hydrogen, 200 litres/(hour.m2). Everyone is welcome to join the speaker and committee for dinner at a local restaurant after the presentation at their own expense. For additional information please contact:

The RACI 3D at the Cove- Drug Discovery & Development, 13-17 July at Couran Cove Island Resort, Queensland

Please register online at http://www.3datthecove.org/?page=8 It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us at ‘3D at the Cove’, the 2008 follow-on meeting from the very successful ‘Drug Design Amongst the Vines 2006’. This drug discovery and development conference is organised by the Biomolecular Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and held at Couran Cove Resort from 13 July to 17 July 2008. At this meeting you will be able to hear the latest developments on all medicinal chemistry topics, such as drug discovery targets and modes of action (GPCRs, Kinases, Ion Channels and proteases), indications (antibacterials, pain, Oncology, Inflammation, CNS disorders), as well as a dedicated session on the Australian Biotech Industry. It is especially exciting to have this meeting on one of Queensland’s secluded Island resorts, allowing ample opportunity to interact and really get to know all delegates (this year limited to 160) and plenary speakers. It is the quality of the talks and the warm interaction that make these meetings a very memorable experience. Couran Cove offers the best Australian beaches and rainforest in our Sunshine state and will provide a wonderful setting for our scientific meeting.
