Dear Padre February 17, 2019 Why does the Church righully celebrate marriage, family, and religious life but neglect the equally important celibate single life? Perhaps if this vocaon got the respect and aenon it deserves, we’d have fewer people rushing into bad relaonships and weak marriages. Our vocaon in life is a giſt from God to become a living response to God’s love. God invites people to holiness and service through marriage, the single life, the priesthood, the diaconate or the religious life. Lest the single life be overlooked, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “We must also remember the great number of single persons who…are especially close to Jesus’ heart and therefore deserve the special affecon and acve solicitude of the Church, especially of pastors” ( CCC 1658). It adds that the doors of homes “and of the great family which is the Church must be open to all of them.” Like the giſt of one’s vocaon, celibacy also is a giſt from God that’s offered back to the Church. Jesus himself chose celibacy, not because he disapproved of marriage or family life, but for the sake of the kingdom. He was wedded to his mission in bringing about a universal family that follows God’s will. To be celibate, then—whether as a single person or in consecrat- ed life—isn’t upheld in and of itself, but for the reign of God. Whatever the vocaon and however it’s lived out, “all cooperate in the building up of the Body of Christ” in a spirit of equality and dignity according “to each one’s own condion and funcon” (Canon 208). —Fr. Dear Padre February 17, 2019

Why does the Church rightfully celebrate marriage, family, and religious life but neglect the equally important celibate single life? Perhaps if this vocation

got the respect and attention it deserves, we’d have fewer people rushing into bad relationships and weak marriages.

Our vocation in life is a gift from God to become a living response to God’s love. God invites people to holiness and service through marriage, the single life, the priesthood, the diaconate or the religious life. Lest the single life be overlooked, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “We must also remember the great number of single persons who…are especially close to Jesus’ heart and therefore deserve the special affection and active solicitude of the Church, especially of pastors” (CCC 1658). It adds that the doors of homes “and of the great family which is the Church must be open to all of them.” Like the gift of one’s vocation, celibacy also is a gift from God that’s offered back to the Church. Jesus himself chose celibacy, not because he disapproved of marriage or family life, but for the sake of the kingdom. He was wedded to his mission in bringing about a universal family that follows God’s will. I love the story that is told of a factory that was having problems with employees stealing. The company hired a security firm to help with the problem. They had guards posted at all exits and they were to check each employee as they left for the day. They searched their clothing and lunch boxes to make sure they were not taking anything out. Every day one guy came by with a wheelbarrow full of junk. Every day they stopped him and plowed through all of the junk and garbage that was in the wheelbarrow. It took several minutes every day to search through the junk. Every day the same thing - nothing but junk in the wheelbarrow. Finally, the security person said, "Look, fellow, I know something is going on. Every day you come through here and all we find in the wheelbarrow is junk. If you promise to tell me exactly what is going on, I promise not to turn you in. Tell me what is going on." The fellow grinned and said, "I'm stealing wheelbarrows."

That story has two truths for us: 1) Things may not always be what they seem to be, at least on the outside, and 2) Don't go looking in junk and garbage for the most obvious answer to the meaning and essence of life. It's found in God's Word. It's found in your heart. As you give your heart and life to Jesus Christ, as you center your entire existence around him, you will have the blissful joy and happiness, the beatitudes Jesus promised. Let us get beyond the junk and negative influences in our lives and fill our hearts with the love which Jesus showed us. Our lives will be happier and a greater witness to the Love our God has for us. Peace,

Prayer is a time of charity.
