Dear Parents,
Thank you for your help in the afternoons with traffic patterns for carpool lines and
walkers. We are trying to ensure efficient and, above all, safe systems. I want to make
sure our morning drop-off process goes smoothly and safely as well. Before 8:00 am we
have some students who are dropped off for morning tutoring and some who wait in the
car until 8:00. If you are dropping off your child before 8:00 am, please pull into the left
lane and we can make that a through-lane; if you are waiting until 8:00 am with your
child, please pull into the right lane. Please avoid cutting through the teacher section of
the parking lot to drop off children.
A few calendar items to be aware of: this Wednesday, October 9 is a teacher workday so
there will be no school for students. The following Wednesday, October 16 will be a
3-hour early release day and students will be released at 12:30 pm.

Our Box Tops fundraiser is an easy way to earn extra funds
for our school while shopping for our favorite brands. Each Box
Tops submitted equals .10cents for our school. It all adds up
when we all pitch in. This year we are able to double up on our
earnings. Box Tops for Education has developed an App which
allows customers to electronically upload the receipt and
automatically tallies how
much $$ has been earned
towards our school on that
purchase. Please follow the
easy steps to register and link
your account to our school.
And if those items on your
receipt have the actual Box
Tops coupon you can still clip
and send them in to our Box
Tops mailbox for submission
and earn extra $$. Please make
sure to send your clipped Box
Tops coupons with your
student by Friday, Oct. 25th.

While anxiety is a normal feeling that all of us experience at
some point, not all of us will have a panic attack. Panic
attacks are characterized by their abrupt onset and often have
symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, shaking, sweating, and
difficulty breathing. While panic attacks are rare, they can be
especially frightening to a young student who does not know
what they are experiencing. If your child has suffered from a
panic attack, we encourage you to tell both your pediatrician, outside counselor if you have one, and your school
counselor so that we can be on the lookout for any reoccurrence. However, if you are with your child when they
are having a panic attack you may want to utilize the below techniques that we use in our counseling office.
When we have a student who is actively having a panic attack, the goal is to calm them down and get them to focus
on breathing and regulating their body. We do this in our offices in a variety of ways. We often have them deep
breath or do a breathing exercise. An example of this would be the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Ask your child to
empty their lungs of all air, and then breathe in through their nose for 4 seconds. Hold their breath for 7 seconds
and breathe out for 8 seconds. By counting and breathing, it often calms them down enough to pull them out of the
panic attack. Another technique is called grounding. Ask your child to name 5 things they see, 4 things they feel, 3
things they hear, 2 things they smell, and 1 thing they taste. As with the deep breathing, the goal is to get them to
focus on their body and senses rather than their anxiety and panic.
Our hope is to teach our students how to self-manage feelings of anxiety. However, panic attacks can sometimes be
random and unexpected. Trying to focus on the body and calming the mind can help your child come back from a
panic attack.

Field hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in Charlotte. Did you know SCMS has a club Field Hockey team open to 6th-8th graders?
We are so proud of our Lady Shockers! After 6 games, they are undefeated with 5 wins and 1 tie! No opponent has yet scored a goal on them. There are only 3 games left in the season and they hope to
end strong. If you are interested in learning more about our field hockey program, contact Cathy Kirkland at [email protected].
We would like to thank the following SCMS volunteers who helped throughout the day on September 23rd, our Fall Picture Day. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Naomi McRary who organized the volunteers for the day. We appreciate each and every one of you.

Online School Payments (OSP) - CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept
payments for school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a
fee (4%), and allows you to pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also
relieves our teachers from the time taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in
money or checks. Teachers will continue to take cash and checks as they always have.
Just sign in to: osp.osmsinc.com/CMS
Choose your student’s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment.
The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. Through the year, events will be
added including field trips, textbooks, fees, and other payments.
