Friday 1 May 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

Nerves are more in evidence this week as we come to the crucial part of the year for so many of our students.

Practical and oral exams at GCSE and A Level have taken place in PE, French, Spanish and Drama this week,

and next week students will take their Art, IGCSE English and Drama exams. Controlled assessments and

coursework deadlines loom and students and staff are working incredibly hard under considerable pressure.

As Years 11, 12 and 13 come to the end of their courses, Year 9 students have been selecting the GCSE

options that they wish to embark on next year. It has been a pleasure to interview so many thoughtful,

articulate and aspirational students and to take the opportunity to congratulate them on their hard work,

positive work ethic and contribution to the school.

New school uniform

I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the new school uniform rules for next year. We are introducing

a new blazer and new navy jumper which will be compulsory for Year 7 students. If any current student

would like to wear a blazer next year, and we hope that many of them will, they can do so from Lester

Bowden, and there is no requirement to buy a new jumper as well. If they do not want a new blazer but

require a new jumper then you can just purchase a jumper. The new jumper has been introduced in response

to parental complaints about the quality and cost of the current jumper. The new one is cheaper (and the

price of skirts has also been reduced) and we have adjusted the colour slightly to match more closely the

colour of the skirt and blazer. In time we hope that all our students’ outer garment will be the blazer and

not the jumper as we believe it is smarter, more hard-wearing and practical.

Internet safety

We are becoming increasingly concerned about the risks our students face when they are online, particularly

as almost all of them now have a computer in their pocket via their mobile phone. On average, teenagers

look at their phone 110 times a day, and in the hour after school this is as frequently as every 6 seconds. The

NSPCC advocate the following approach:

1. Have the conversation about internet use early and often.

2. Explore online together. Are the games they are playing allowing them access to an online

community?

3. Know who your child is talking to online. Who do they know? Are they just online friends? What do

they talk about?

4. Set rules and agree boundaries. Is your daughter allowed to take her phone into her bedroom

overnight? What are they sharing about themselves online? Is the wifi left on all night?

5. Make sure the content is age-appropriate. Do you know what the apps she has on her phone are for?

6. Use parental controls to filter, restrict, monitor or to report content.

7. Check they know how to use privacy settings and reporting tools. Is she aware that employers will

now search internet profiles of job applicants? What is she doing to protect herself online?

Below are a couple of very helpful websites which give parents advice about how to help your daughter use

the internet safely.

We will shortly be organising a workshop on this issue for parents.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Student Success with Team GB Rifle Squad

In September last year, Emma O’Neill 10DX was invited by Team GB to join their Rifle Squad (she featured on page 7 of Rosebery News on 3 October). Since that time, she has spent several weekends training with them and in the last inter-squad competition in December she finished second. She was subsequently invited to be part of the squad that represents Great Britain at the major international championships in Oldenburg, Germany in April. Emma has just returned from her shooting competition – delighted and exhausted in equal measure! Although she didn’t medal, she scored three new personal bests and contributed well to the overall team event – which GB won!

Student Raises Money for BEAT Charity

Jessica Pascal in 8RX raised £110 for Beat, the charity

which supports anyone with an eating disorder. Jessica wore silly socks for the day as part of the charity’s ‘Sock it to Eating Disorders’ Campaign. Her email below explains more about her amazing achievement. Well Done! Mr Harvey, Head of Year 8

Erin Southey 10RX Royal Day Out On Sunday Erin Southey was fortunate to be invited to play at the St George’s Day Parade of Queen Scouts at Windsor Castle. Erin has been a member of The First Claygate Scout and Guide Band for approximately six years and they have worked hard to become an A grade band. After a lengthy audition process, the band were chosen to play in front of the Duchess of Gloucester and Bear Grylls at the castle. They performed five formation pieces in the Quadrangle as well as playing during the ceremony. It took a lot of extra rehearsals and commitment but was a very rewarding day. Erin is looking forward to their next big performance which will be the New Year’s Day parade in Paris. Congratulations Erin. Miss Nicholson, Head of Year 10

Hi everybody

I've counted up all the money you sponsored me when I wore silly socks and I raised £110 for Beat, a fantastic achievement beyond what I could have imagined, so thank you all for being so generous and sponsoring me while I was wearing my silly socks, every donation makes such a huge difference, and I'm really grateful. Also, I recently received a letter from Beat saying that people all over the UK taking part in Sock it to eating disorders raised £14,000! In case you were wondering, for every pound spent: 1.8p is spent running Beat 16.1p is spent on getting income for the charity, and

82.1p goes to helping people suffering from eating disorders

Thanks again, it means a lot. Jess

GCE & GCSE Summer 2015 Examinations

As we approach the summer exam season, students are reminded to check that all the information on their

Examination Timetable is correct. If you have withdrawn from an exam or have dropped a subject

completely, you should have received a new Examination Timetable reflecting these changes. If any student

requires a copy of their timetable, please come to the Exams Office to collect one.

Year 11 Form Tutors read out a reminder of Exam Day Procedures to Year 11 students this week during form

time and an exam assembly was held for Year 10 students today. Public Exams begin on Monday 11 May

until Tuesday 23 June. Morning exams start at 8.45am and afternoon exams 1.30pm. Students must arrive

at least 15 minutes before the start of their exam. If you are absent or late for an exam, please telephone

Reception or the Exams Office by 8.30am and leave a message.

Please ensure you bring the correct equipment to every exam. Pencil cases must be transparent and water

bottles clear; juice is not allowed. Please make sure you leave your bag in your locker and do not bring your

mobile phone into an exam room; the penalties can be severe.

Students are reminded to read the JCQ Regulation Notices and Rosebery School Exam Guidelines. These can

be found on the Exam page of the school website. Students are asked to read the notices carefully to ensure

that they are aware of the regulations and expectations regarding these formal assessments.

If you have any examination queries at all, please do not hesitate to contact the Exams Office at [email protected].

Two local youth Jazz Bands now open to new members!

The Epsom Youth Jazz Ensemble & Epsom Youth Big Band are now recruiting new members and are on the lookout for enthusiastic young musicians to join. Both bands run outside of school hours on a Tuesday afternoon/evening at Stamford Green School in Epsom and are run and directed by respected local musician & teacher, Ben Tompsett. Ben is primarily a Jazz Saxophonist & Pianist, with nearly 20 years of experience working as a musician, teacher and composer. The Junior Jazz Ensemble has no age or grade restrictions and is open to most instruments. The Big Band is more suitable for those approaching year 9 and above with a playing level of Grade 4-8. The bands are now entering their 5th year and continue to grow in strength and number, playing a variety of Jazz, Funk and Contemporary styles including vocal numbers and music from TV & Film. Please email Ben for more details. [email protected]
