One of the things that has transformed interactions between young people in recent times has been the rise and rise of social media; most of our students could not imagine life without Facebook, Snapchat, Snapchat Story and Instagram, nor the thought of not having a mobile phone in their pocket to access them. I would like to draw your attention to the very helpful guidance issued by the NSPCC https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping- children-safe/online-safety/ which gives parents some very useful advice on how to discuss these issues with your daughter and easy steps you can take as a family to safeguard everyone from the dangers that exist through access to the internet. In this week where we have all hugged our loved ones more tightly, grateful for the opportunity to do so, it seems appropriate to remind you of the unnecessary risks that some of our students are exposed to because of their behaviour at social gatherings at the weekends and during holidays. Our approach to this issue, which is one faced by all secondary schools, is to continue to educate our students on the potential dangers of alcohol, to encourage them to make decisions for themselves, to resist peer pressure if they feel uncomfortable in any situation, and to emphasise the need to exercise good judgement in situations where alcohol is present. There is evidence that some of our students are drinking alcohol at home before going to parties and that at some of these parties, parents are providing alcohol without, as the law requires, seeking the prior approval of the children’s parents. I think it is worth reminding you that, if you serve or provide alcohol to children under 18, you may also be liable for any resulting problems of accidents. This is known as ‘vicarious liability’. Both of these websites have some very useful information about how parents can approach this topic with your daughter: https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/check-the-facts/underage-drinking/how-to-talk-alcohol http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/index/information-and-services/parents/your-childs-health-and-safety/young-people- and-alcohol.htm We have built a highly skilled Intervention Team, led by Mrs Anderson who, in addition to our pastoral team of Heads and Deputy Heads of Year, offers a wealth of support, advice and guidance on these, and other difficult issues and who meet regularly with students to offer objective and non-judgemental support. Dear Parents and Carers, As with much of the world, the Rosebery community has taken time to reflect on the shocking atrocities in Paris on Friday evening. We have aimed to strike a careful balance between the obvious distress that discussing these terrible events can cause, with the need to reinforce the very values of tolerance, diversity, multiculturalism and freedom that the terrorists are so determined to destroy. After a week filled with desperate news stories, it was therefore even more of a pleasure to be a member of the audience for the House Shakespeare Drama Festival on Thursday evening. The talent, energy and humour in these performances were life enhancing and a joy to watch. We were also honoured to be joined by Mrs Valerie Hitchcock, mother of Ms Sally Hitchcock in whose memory we have established a new Endeavour in Drama prize, which was won by Jemima McCaffrey. Sapphire House were the overall winners for their performance of Twelfth Night. Many thanks to Mrs Evans, Mr Waight, Mrs Dever and the House Prefects for organising such a great festival. Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen @HTRosebery
