HAPPY BIRTHDAY

MISS SHAW!

We loved

celebrating with you

& helping you eat

cake!

The Latest from Miss Shaw!

Hi everyone, what a fabulous start to the term. Our learning

has taken on a hands-on and game style approach. This

approach engages the students and appeals to their

interests which encourages more participation and

responses during lessons.

This term in science, all grades are exploring the world of

living and non-living things and their habitats.

In HASS, we (year 3-4’s) are continuing on with celebrations

and commemorations that contribute to Australia’s Identity.

We will be learning about media arts in technology and

working towards creating our advertisements for special

events in our community.

I will also be teaching HPE this term and will work our way

through many areas such as how to look after our bodies

and keep ourselves healthy – plus building our athletic skills!

We have many events this term and I am keen to work with

the students in supporting their learning.

Thank you to St Lawrence State School and the

students for a fabulous birthday on Monday.

I had such a special day.

Miss Shaw ☺

The greatest gifts you can give children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” Denis Waitley

Hi Everyone,

I’m pleased to be back for another term of supporting, encouraging and having fun with kids. I hope you all had a great Easter and school holiday break; I’m sure the kids have lots of stories to tell.

The focus for Chappy Sessions this Term will be Independence and our stories and activities will aim to develop skills that enable children to think, reflect, work and solve problems independently at an age-appropriate level. As you can appreciate, there are many parallel skills that need to be developed in order for independence to flourish such as: listening, self-control and consideration of others which will also be included in our sessions during the term. As parents you will know that the way to teach children good habits and values is to patiently repeat instructions and teaching over and over and over again. Sometimes it feels as if we are on “autoplay” but by persisting patiently, children do, over time, adopt good habits of independence, consideration and self-control. You might find the following article helpful when encouraging independence at home:

https://www.todaysparent.com/kids/teaching-kids-to-be-more-independent/

A few of the stand-out statements of the article are:

1. Forget perfection: accept that your children won’t do the task as well as you. If the milk spills, show them how to clean it up without criticism and assure them it happens to everyone. 2. Praise something: instead of pointing out that their shoes are on the wrong feet, say, “You put on your own shoes! Good job!” They’ll discover the discomfort on their own. Give positive follow-up like, “I bet you’ll get them on the right feet tomorrow.” 3. Don’t rush in to solve minor issues when they crop up: encourage your children to problem-solve by asking if they can come up with a fix. If they’re stumped, give them time to think before offering up your ideas. Obviously all of this takes time, energy and patience but the end result is so worth it when you see your child

becoming independent.

This term I will be at school every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you would like more information on Chaplaincy at St Lawrence State School or on how I can be of assistance to you and your family, please contact me

by phone (0407132183) or email: [email protected]

I’m looking forward to catching up with families and community members at the Anzac Day Service on Sunday.

Kind Regards Chappy Kari
