Every year winter comes and the winter goes but what stays is the memories,
knowledge and the learning which your child acquires within a time frame of three
months which he entirely spends out with his family. So family is the first social
institution wherein a child is shaped out. This winter make a best use of the holidays
to furnish your child‟s capabilities and follow the assignments and tasks stated below
as a winter work for your child.
Language development:
Language is partly innate and partly learned as children interact with other
people and environment. Help your children to learn better language by
following methods:
THE LEGENDS SCHOOL OF EDUCATION WINTER HOME ASSIGNMENT FOR THE SESSION 2014-2015
Book-work to be done with the help of parents. Paste or draw relevant pictures against the answers. WHA 2014-2015
Improve their listening skills:
Initiate a conversation with your child taking up any topic in the
surroundings.
Explain some stories like Greedy dog, thirsty crow, the hen that laid
golden eggs, unity is strength etc and evaluate their morals.
Ask questions at the end of the story telling phase to judge his presence of
mind while listening to it.
Improve their speaking skills
Give your child an environment where he can put his feelings into
correct words. Some children tend to develop language and speak in
spurts while others show more slow and steady growth. So make your
child acquaint with the following words, explain their meaning and ask
him to speak them out whenever required.
Action words: eat, drink, go, stop, run, walk, catch, blow, cry, throw,
swing, colour, draw, smile, dance
Location words: up, down, hot, cold, loud, quiet, dirty, clean, wet, soft,
tasty, boring
In addition to these focus on the most widely spoken words like more, please, thank you,
hi/help, bye, again, sorry, yes, no, okay, good-bye. Give your child a flexible and humorous
environment where he would speak with ease without stammering.
Improve their reading skills
Recognition of words is an important aspect of language learning.
Make your child to read the words and alphabets from the daily
newspapers, candy wrappers, eatable packagings etc so as to visualize
his reading skills.
Writing skills
Handwriting is an important part of writing skill. A good handwriting is an
asset which a child acquires after practicing. Make your child to write one
page daily.

time to play and watch out cartoons and good movies which will add to
his knowledge of quest and learning.
Maintain a sketch book and ask your child to draw a simple object
daily and colour it.
Other important guidelines and assignments

values of respect, unity and harmony. Ask your child to
develop a habit of greeting people with „Asalamualaikum‟ and
good morning/afternoon/evening/night at the appropriate times.

hemisphere.
2. Answer the following questions:
a. What is the shape of the earth?
i. The earth is spherical in shape.
b. How many continents and oceans are there in all? Name them.
i. There are seven continents and four oceans in all. The seven continents
are :
1. Asia
2. Africa
3. North America
4. South America
5. Europe
6. Antarctica
7. Australia
ii. The four oceans are
1. Pacific ocean
2. Indian ocean
3. Atlantic ocean
4. Arctic ocean
c. How is globe useful?
i. A globe is a model of the earth. It gives an accurate picture of the
earth‟s surface as it is a spherical representation.
d. List the properties of longitudes.
i. The properties of longitudes are:
1. They are equal in length.
2. All of them cross the latitudes at 900.
3. The distance between any two longitudes decreases as one
moves from the equator towards the poles.
e. What do you understand by grid? How is it helpful?
i. A grid is formed when lines of latitude and the lines of longitude
intersect each other. It is useful in locating a place on a globe or map.

Topic: Maps---Our guides
1. Define a map.
a. A map is a two dimensional representation of the whole or a part of a
geographical area of the Earth‟s surface.
2. What are the advantages of a map over a globe?
a. The advantages of a map over a globe can be summed up as under:
i. Maps can be folded and carried easily from one place to another.
ii. Maps give us detailed information which is not possible on a
small globe.
iii. Maps can help us to locate cities, towns, plains etc.
3. What do you understand by a scale of a map?
a. The ratio between the distances of the map to the distance on the ground is
called the scale in a map. All maps have a scale in one corner. The scale
helps to measure actual distance between any two places.
4. How are physical maps different from political maps?
a. Physical maps show physical features like mountains, plains, plateaus,
rivers etc. On the other hand political maps show the political boundaries
of different countries their capitals along with other states in the countries.
5. How is a key in a map useful?
a. The key in a map is very useful. The key tells the meaning of the colour,
the symbols used in the map. By looking at the key, we can easily tell the
type of feature shown in a particular area.
Topic: Climatic Variations
1. Define the following terms:
a. Weather: The condition of the atmosphere over a short period of time.
b. Climate: The average of weather conditions of a place over a long period of
time.
c. Altitude: The height of a place above the sea level.

2. Altitude or height of a place above the sea level.
3. Distance from the sea.
4. Humidity.
5. Ocean currents.
b. What are the three zones into which the Earth‟s surface is divided?
i. The three zones into which the Earth‟s surface is divided are:
1. Torrid zone
2. Temperate zone
3. Frigid zone
c. Why is there a decrease in temperature with increase in distance from the
equator? Explain.
i. There is a decrease in temperature with the increase in distance from
the equator because the rays of the sun fall directly on the equator and
are spread over a smaller area. This direct heat near the equator makes
the region the hottest in the world. But as we move away from the
equator towards the poles, the sun‟s rays become slanting spreading
over a wider area. These areas are therefore cooler.
d. How does distance from the sea decide the climate of a place?
i. The distance from the sea decides the climate of a place. Places near
the sea have moderate climate but places far away from the sea are
very cold in winter and very hot in summer. This is because land gets
heated faster and loses heat faster than water.
e. What is an ocean current? Give an example to explain the effect of ocean
currents on a place.
i. An ocean current is a continuous directed movement of ocean water
caused due to forces acting upon the water such as the earth‟s rotation,
wind, temperature etc. The Gulf stream is a warm ocean current which
makes north-west Europe much more temperate than any other region
at the same latitude.
f. What is global warming?
i. Global warming is an average increase in the earth‟s temperature,
which is the cause of changes in climate. It is a result of the Green

a. Sugar and salt are the two solids, milk and alcohol are the two liquids and
oxygen and nitrogen are the two gases that can dissolve in water.
5. Why do solids have a fixed shape?
a. Solids have a fixed shape because the molecules are closely packed together.
They always attract each other with great force.
6. Why do liquids flow?
a. In liquids, the molecules are less closely packed and the attraction between
molecules is less. Therefore the molecules can move freely and thus flow.

1. Why do we say that soil is foundation of the life?
a. Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth. It supports plants which provide food
to all living beings on this planet. Thus we say the soil is foundation of the
life.
2. How was soil formed from rocks?
a. When earth was formed, there were only hard rocks, water and air. The sun
heated the rocks, the rain made them cook and the wind blew over them. As a
result, the rocks broke into small pieces. They were carried around by wind
and water and got rubbed against each other and became tiny fine particles.
These tiny particles finally changed into the loose material known as soil.

This makes the soil unfit for cultivation. In this way water causes soil erosion.
4. Why do some rivers change their course?
a. A river coming down the hills carries a lot of mud with it. Upon reaching the
plains the flow of river slows down. It leaves part of the soil on its way. Over
a period of time, soil accumulates and makes the river to change their course.
5. How is man responsible for soil erosion?
a. The human factors that are responsible for soil erosion are:
i. Deforestation ‟ploughing of hill slopes
ii. Overgrazing of cattle
6. List three ways by which soil can be conserved?
