It promises to be an exciting and action-packed one for the children and our staff as we have events like Athletics Carnivals; Canberra Trips; Eisteddfods, and class camps spaced around our normal daily class routines. I look forward to sharing the journey with you as the term progresses. Welcome to New (& Old) Staff On behalf of our school community, I would like to welcome Tony Barron who this week took up the position of Acting Assistant Principal for the rest of the year. Tony replaces Kevin Larkin who has commenced a 12 month period of Study Leave. Prior to joining our staff, Tony has been the Assistant to the Principal & Religious Education Co-Ordinator at St Joseph‘s School at Beenleigh. This role saw Tony also involved in the leading of many of that school‘s leadership responsibilities. Tony has taught in schools in both the Brisbane and Toowoomba diocese. I am sure that you will make him feel welcome in our school and be supportive of him as he settles in. Welcome back as well this week to Jennifer Campbell (Yr 2GC) and Angela Lane (Yr 6PL) who both return from Maternity Leave. They will be working in a Job Share arrangement with Trudy Grimsey (Mon Wed) and Mary Petersen (Mon Wed) respectively. Our thanks again goes to Deanne Krueger and Helen Boyes for filling these contract positions for the first part of the year. Finally we welcome Vanessa Munro to Yr 5JH for the term. Vanessa is replacing Jo-Anne Henderson who has taken this time off on Long Service Leave. Vanessa has already taught Year 5 this year as she filled a short term contract during Term 1. Your Prayers Please Your prayers are requested for the Marais and Pomroy families following the sad passing of one of our Prep teachers, Jan Marais‘ father, Murray Pomroy, over the weekend. Jan will be absent from school for this week as her family prepares to celebrate Murray‘s life at a funeral celebration on Friday. I am sure that Jan and her family would appreciate your prayers and support during this sad time. Athletics Carnival Changes for this Friday Our athletics Track Carnival will be held this Friday, 16 July, on the College oval for children who are turning 8 to 13 years this year. Included with this newsletter is the program which has significant changes to the normal routine of past years. Please take the time to check through this program as the children will not be on the oval for the whole day. I also ask that you pay particular attention to the flyer distributed yesterday which details the pre-order system and menus available for the day. Specificially, all order are to be placed and paid for by tomorrow. The tuckshop will not be open for any other purchases on Friday. Parents are still most welcome to come along and support the children for the carnival. Here‘s hoping for clear skies and a fast track. July Parents’ and Friends’ Association Meeting – Monday, 19 July Please be advised that our next P & F meeting is set down for this coming Monday with a start of 7.00pm. The meeting will be held in the school Staff Room and should go no longer than 8.30pm. Marymount Combined Schools’ Art Show Meeting – Tonight 6.00pm Our next Art Show meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6.00pm in the College Board Room. The committee would love any extra help if you can provide your time. Already they have much of the co-ordination of the weekend event in hand but your support would not go unwanted. The meetings usually only go for just over the hour. College Finish Change Wednesdays Only The College have informed us that they will be finishing school at 2.55pm every Wednesday for this term as they trial some timetable changes. This will mean that their finish time coincides with ours on this day. This may cause some issues with the traffic around the schools and as such I would ask for you extra patience on this day as the new system comes into play. Just a short note to introduce myself. My name is Tony Barron, and I have taken over from Kev Larkin as Assistant Principal for the rest of the school year. I have spent the last 3 and a half years as Assistant Principal at St Joseph‘s Beenleigh, where in my role I was responsible for Religious Education, Administration issues, ICT and Behaviour Management. I also have many interests in Music and Sport, and in particular Rugby League. This year I will be travelling to Adelaide in August as the Manager of the Queensland Primary Schools Rugby League side. I look forward to meeting many new parents and students, and working with the staff in my new role. I know that this will be an exciting and challenging role, and one that I am looking forward to. Tony Barron

Welcome back to our second semester this year and I hope you enjoyed the break with your beautiful children. As usual, they have retuned full of enthusiasm and energy and it‘s always a pleasure to see their smiles and hear their laughter. One of my favourite duties each week is to supervise the internal road crossing after school. Unlike other parts of my ―usual‖ day, it is rather predictable. It brings to mind the most positive and the most frustrating or challenging of behaviours. The uplifting part is that most children appear to be happy and content. The energy levels and smiles clearly suggest they are content with happenings at school. I find it so refreshing and motivating when so many children offer a spontaneous greeting. They proudly display their daily creations or excitedly retell one of their daily school activities. This signals a high level of commitment and care by our staff. It‘s just as refreshing to see and hear of the children‘s plans for the afternoon or night. The children regularly skip past, calling out their plans and hopes as they go. This shows that the children can well adjust from the routines of school to those of home, and are growing in their sense of commitment and organisation. What really strikes me is the respect and manners displayed by both parents and children. The vast majority of adults and children offer a nod or some form of greeting, and I am constantly quite amazed at the number of people who actually say, ―Thanks,‖ as they cross the road. This signals a very healthy school climate. I feel privileged to be part of a community that acknowledges and offers respect to those around them. The modeling offered by parents, by way of both road safety and human interaction, is immeasurable and on behalf of the children, I offer thanks. The frustrating part of the duty lies in the fact that a small percentage of our community consistently challenge the rules and offer very poor modeling to the children. I refer to those who park in the ―No Parking‖ areas and who insist on collecting children without any special needs, from the Internal Road. I find it frustrating because these children involved are then being denied the opportunity to know the importance of following rules. More concerning is the fact that this situation endangers the lives of others, and despite numerous requests for compliance with the rules, the behaviour continues on a daily basis. Children who are collected from the Internal Road are also singled out as if they are exempt from some school policies and practices. I consider it a privilege to be healthy enough to walk a short distance to a carpark in a designated area and I believe it is not too much to expect those physically able to do so. I will continue to relish the positives of the Crossing duty, confident in the knowledge that the positives far outweigh the negatives. On the other hand, I implore those who are not complying with our policies to recon-sider the impact of their choice in light of the modeling provided to their children, and in the interests and safety for all those in our community.

More Great news We have received notification that Marymount has won ―The most Successful School‖ award from the Queensland All Schools Cross Country which was held last month. In the letter of recognition it states that we ―won a number of individual and team medals, out-classing over 200 other schools‖. This was once again an outstanding performance from our children and sincere thanks must go to the parents who made the trek across Brisbane for the occasion. We can thank our head coach, Jackson Elliott; Paul Hill (P.E. co-ordinator) and our band of kids and supporters for the prize of $100 we now have added to our Sport budget, and for the most memorable occasion that was enjoyed by all those present. Have a great week Annette O’Shea
