BERRY COLLEGE 2 FINE ARTS EVENTS

Dear Patrons of the Arts,

Welcome to another great year of fine arts events at Berry

College! The arts are essential for our flourishing as individuals

and as communities. The events in this calendar are a great

contribution of Berry College to northwest Georgia. Again this

year our fine arts faculty have planned for the Berry community,

and the larger community of Rome and Floyd County, a series of

performances and events to edify, stimulate and delight us.

Thank you for your interest and support of the arts. We look

forward to seeing you at one of our concerts or shows and to

partnering with you to encourage and enjoy the arts.

Dr. Thomas D. Kennedy, Dean

August 21 – September 21, 2017Bad, Bold, Wiser (solo exhibition)Kelly StevensonMoon Gallery, M–F, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.Reception September 18 at 5 p.m.

Bad, Bold, Wiser showcases the latest creations by ceramic sculptor Kelly Stevenson. This body of work builds upon Ms. Stevenson’s investment in the human figure and her subjective response to place, which are realized in clay and mixed media. She has exhibited in a range of venues including most recently a site-specific installation on the Yellowstone River, and at invitational and juried exhibitions in art centers, commercial galleries, and academic settings, such as Auburn University, Abernathy Arts Center near Atlanta, and the Clay Studio in Philadelphia.

Kelly Stevenson was born and raised in Livingston, Montana. She received her BFA from Montana State University in Bozeman (while there she studied abroad in Italy), a post baccalaureate from the University of Montana in Missoula and her MFA from Georgia State University in Atlanta. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Art Program/Department of Fine Arts at Berry College.

August 28, 2017Christina A. West, Artist’s talk and receptionMoon Gallery, 5 p.m.

Coinciding with the current Moon Gallery show, Bad, Bold, Wiser, Professor Christina West will give a talk about her work that involves creating detailed representations of the human body either as busts or whole figures that are made using a range of painted materials including clay and resins. This work hints at stories but engages with the complexity and mystery of our bodies often with a dark sense of humor. Ms. West earned a BFA from Sienna Heights University in Michigan (when she also studied abroad in Italy), in addition to a post baccalaureate and MFA from Alfred University in Western New York. She has been awarded several artist residencies around the United States including Archie Bray in Montana and Bemis in Omaha. West also has an extensive exhibition record including recent solo shows in commercial galleries in Kansas City, Nashville and Miami, as well as university venues at Virginia Commonwealth and the University of Georgia. Kelly Stevenson was her student at Georgia State University where she is an associate professor at the Welch School of Art and Design.

September 25 – October 26, 2017Imagination (Un)Bound (invitational group exhibition)Brian Barr, Andy Cunningham, Al Denyer, Katie Hargrave, Travis Head, Clive King, Ross McClain, Jeff Morton, Ty Smith, Chuck Tomlins and Christina Renfer VogelMoon Gallery, M–F, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Tulsa-born Modernist Margo Hoff referred to her sketchbook as a “constant companion” that was used to capture her ever-changing surroundings. Later these notational drawings became the basis for prints and paintings, or as she referred to them, the “final form.” Imagination (Un)Bound is an invitational group exhibition that features works by artists that have strong investment, like Hoff, in the process of creating their work. Their sketches or other types of preparatory work will be displayed alongside the “final form,” or the more fully resolved piece they reference. (Un)Bound is intended to provide a glimpse into the creative process and procedures by artists, from different generations and experiences, working with a range of media and imagery. The exhibition grew out a of a conference presentation that was prompted in part by several recent museum exhibitions featuring sketches by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat (“Unknown Notebooks”) at the High Museum of Art. The five conference presenters (Denyer, Head, King, Tomlins and Vogel) are exhibiting work in addition to several other artists that are part of their community.

October 2, 2017Jeff Morton, Artist’s talk and receptionMoon Gallery, 5 p.m.

the kudzu-invaded landscape of his adopted home in Signal Mountain, Tennessee in his paintings. He will discuss these paintings and detail the often arduous process of creating sources for this work that provides the viewer not with documents of what is seen, but, in the words of the artist, with “a relationship of things experienced.” Jeff Morton is Professor of Art and Department Chair at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Recent exhibitions include, The Anxious Landscape, at Pellossippi State College in Knoxville and the Hunter International III at the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga. Professor Morton earned a MFA from Yale University and BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. He is also the 2015-16 recipient of the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee State Arts Commission.

October 9, 2017Ross McClain, Artist’s talk and receptionMoon Gallery, 5 p.m.

Professor Ross McClain, whose work is in the current Moon Gallery exhibition Imagination (Un)Bound, will discuss his work as a designer and educator. His professional practice includes identity design, branding and web design that is motivated by empathy or, in his words, “responding to human feelings and concerns that allows one to create designs that are truly powerful, useful and meaningful to people and society.”

Ross McClain earned a BA in Advertising and Graphic Design from Western Kentucky University and a MA/MFA in Design from the University of Iowa. He is currently an associate professor and chair of the art department at Furman University in Greenville, SC.

October 23, 2017Brian Barr, Artist’s talk and receptionMoon Gallery, 5 p.m.

Brian Barr also has work in Imagination (Un)Bound and will discuss his work as an artist, illustrator and educator. In addition to his painting and drawings made for gallery display, Professor Barr will also discuss his graphic novel, Jackdaw, that has been serialized on-line since 2013. He will also talk about his work illustrating books for children including Martin the Guitar, that was written by Berry Senior Lecturer Emeritus Harry Musselwhite. Their second book, Martin the Guitar: On the Road, will be published this year.

Brian Barr earned a BFA in Drawing from the University of Central Florida and a MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art. In addition to his teaching duties as a full professor at Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Barr regularly offers classes at Berry as an adjunct instructor of art.

September 14, 2017Stepháne Wremble Band

Ford Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.

He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film, Midnight in Paris, and he performed live during this year’s Oscars telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer Stepháne Wrembel, who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside, has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. His band includes Thor Robert Jensen, guitar; Ari Folman-Cohen, bass; and Nick Anderson, drums.

We are delighted to have the Stepháne Wremble Band open our 2017-18 Concert Season.

January 8 - February 8, 2018Travis Head, Journals and Reading Lists (solo exhibition)Moon Gallery, M–F, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.Artist’s talk/reception January 8 at 5 p.m.

Journals and Reading Lists features recent work by Professor Travis Head that is autobiographical and utilizes drawing that is, in the words of the artist, “mediated by technology and entertainment.” This blending of the personal with the narrative and digital conventions of video games, for example, are contained within bound journals covering a period of months or years. His Reading Lists function as journals but not in the sequential pages of a book but as accumulations of experiences on a single page such as his Quilt Squares project. Started in November of 2015, the drawings reference the barn quilts that Travis Head sees driving country roads around his home in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The recipient of numerous artist residencies and a recent fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Mr. Head has a considerable exhibition record including recent shows at the University of Kentucky, Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Gift is a juried art exhibition that features work made from across the United States in painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, graphic design, and both sculptural and functional ceramics (the primary disciplines taught at Berry). The title of the show borrows from issues discussed in Lewis Hyde’s book, The Gift, in which he compares the reception of an artwork to that of a gift that is received. As such, the artwork plays a unique and privileged role in society and one that fosters community and dialogue.

Our juror, Dr. Jordan Amirkhani, is an art historian who wrote her dissertation on the French painter Francis Picabia at the University of Kent (UK). In addition to her

Ellen’s thesis will combine her studies in psychology with clay, a medium she has worked with since she was ten. Lauren will focus on landscape painting and the representation of serenity. These concerns connect with her position as garden assistant at Oak Hill. Ellen has made many contributions to the Art Program including serving as an assistant in the Moon Gallery’s ceramics studio since her sophomore year.
