Our Stainless Is On the Job. . . . . .in diesel exhaust fluid environments. Starting in 2010, new EPA regulations will mandate reductions in nitrogen oxide from diesel exhaust. Many diesel engine designers are

using an automotive-grade, urea-based diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to achieve these higher emissions standards. One problem; urea is highly corrosive to carbon steel and non-ferrous alloys—making stainless steel the logical choice for engine designers and the builders of DEF storage tank systems (which will require stainless steel plate, pipe, and sheet). Outokumpu’s duplex grades—like LDX 2101®—are ideal for DEF applications, providing superior corrosion resistance and nearly twice the strength of standard

stainless (which means thinner wall construction and no stiffeners required). At Outokumpu, helping to reduce emissions is something to smile about.

Duplex Approved for ANSI/NSF Standard 61: Municipal Drinking Water SystemsThree grades of duplex stainless steel produced by Outokumpu— including two proprietary grades—have been approved for drinking water applications by the NSF. The Duplex grades join Outokumpu stainless steel types 304, 304L, 316 and 316L, which had previously been accepted under Standard 61 Municipal Drinking Water Systems, the United States standard for safe potable water. The duplex grades are:

Lean Duplex LDX 2101®

2205 Code Plus Two®

Lean Duplex Outokumpu 2304

In approving the duplex stainless steels, the NSF analyzed water samples for a wide range of contaminants that could dissolve from stainless steel and, thus, mix with drinking water. Test results on the Outokumpu duplex grades showed that contaminants were far below the allowable concentrations, in fact barely measurable.

Stainless steels, and particularly duplex grades, are gaining attention as water-related infrastructures in the U.S. begin to reach the end of their life cycles. “The older technologies used over the past century—from cast carbon steel to concrete to plastic polycarbonates—are now approaching the end of their life,” explained Mike Stateczny, Senior VP, Plate Products for Outokumpu. “We’re showing people that duplex stainless steel is the material that should be used

when municipalities rebuild their infrastructures. Once a community has installed duplex grades of stainless steel, they likely won’t have to replace their water distribution network for another 100 years,” he added.

For more than 35 years Outokumpu duplex alloys have made breakthroughs in many industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, as well as the material thickness reductions they provide. Outokumpu’s duplex stainless steels offer the right ferrite-austenite balance for the most challenging desalination industry applications.

Motiva Expansion Includes Outokumpu’s 2205 Code Plus Two® StainlessWhen expansion of the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery in Texas is complete in 2012, the facility will include 2,500 tons of stainless pipe from Outokumpu, including the mill’s proprietary duplex grade 2205 Code Plus Two®. Outokumpu—a leading producer of stainless steel—has supplied pipe, plate, coil, fittings, structural hollow sections, and heat exchanger tubing in both standard and proprietary grades for many of the world’s refinery construction and/or expansion projects. For the Motiva project (the largest U.S. refinery expansion project in more than 30 years), over 2,500 tons of pipe in various sizes and grades was supplied from one Outokumpu mill. The pipe order, which included large diameter heavy wall pipe, ranged from 1” to 36” in diameter and was fulfilled by Outokumpu’s pipe operations in Wildwood, Florida. “Outokumpu’s ability to take the steel from melt to finished pipe and to make the complete size and alloy range required for the project was very important,” noted Joe Avento, Outokumpu’s Key Account Manager, Pipe. A number of standard grades of stainless were provided by Outokumpu including 304L, 316L, 321, 347, some nickel alloys and Outokumpu’s duplex 2205 Code Plus Two. This duplex grade is particularly effective in refinery applications because of the grade’s strength and corrosion characteristics. Outokumpu’s duplex 2205 Code Plus Two demonstrates the producer’s commitment to not only meet the requirements of the original 2205 (or UNS S31803) as established in ASTM and ASME, but also to achieve two additional requirements thus transforming the grade to the superior UNS S32205. The two requirements are:

Achieve 25-30% Savings Using LDX 2101® over 304LBecause of the higher yield strength of Outokumpu’s new lean duplex stainless steel LDX 2101®, structural engineers and fabricators in the biofuels and biomass industry can now reduce wall thickness in tanks and vessels. This reduction in wall thickness means significant savings—not only in material weight and cost, but also in supporting structures for tanks as well as in the handling and welding process during construction.

The newly developed grade of stainless steel, LDX 2101, boasts two important chemical composition adjustments (from 304L) that help the grade achieve mechanical strength twice that of 304L while still offering comparable corrosion-resistance, along with ease and stability of welding and machining.

LDX 2101 gets its corrosion resistance from its high chromium content. As Elisabeth Torsner, Outokumpu’s VP Market Development recently wrote in a paper for Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology, “Stainless steel relies on its invisible, exceedingly thin, passive film of chromium oxide to protect its surface against the onset of corrosion. Chromium is the basis for all corrosion resistance, by definition at least 10.5% Cr, the more chromium the higher corrosion resistance.” LDX 2101 contains 21.5% chromium compared to 18.1% chromium in 304L. Not only is LDX 2101 heavy on chromium, it is light on nickel. LDX 2101 was initially developed to address the volatile cost of nickel while offering an alternative in corrosion resistance to 304L. LDX 2101 contains 1.5% nickel compared with nickel content of 8.2% in 304L. The reduction in nickel content offers better price stability to the purchaser, when he/she has to consider several purchases over a longer period of time and it adds confidence in budgeted material prices vs. actual purchase prices. Table 1 shows the typical chemical compositions of some stainless steel grades, including many of the duplex grades proprietary to Outokumpu.

Helping Our Service Center Marketing Partners Activate Their Ideas in Stainless

In this issuen Meet Poul-Erik Arnvig 2n Elisabeth Torsner Retires 3n Q & A with Elisabeth Torsner 4n Outokumpu makes Dow Jones Index 5n Leadership Changes at Pipe 5n New Corrosion Handbooks 6

Market Development Plays Key Role In Growth of Stainless Outokumpu is recognized as an

industry leader in the development of new grades for specific applications. Such game-changing

grades as PRODEC®, developed nearly 30 years ago in bar and plate form to improve PRODuction EConomy for machining and tooling is one such example. More recently, Outokumpu’s lean duplex LDX 2101®, gave end-users a grade with pitting resistance similar to 316L, but with far better stress corrosion cracking resistance and twice the

mechanical strength of the commodity grade. Countless hours are spent in Outokumpu’s metallurgy laboratories to perfect the company’s

new grades.

But what many may not realize is the amount of effort that goes into identifying the end-user’s initial needs and ultimately establishing an end-user industry standard that legitimizes the use of a unique grade for a specific application. In essence the identification, specification, and standards acceptance of specific grades

is the responsibility of the Market Development team at Outokumpu.

Market Development is a Marathon, Not a SprintThis month Outokumpu loses a valuable member of the Market Development team in North America, Elisabeth Torsner, who retired November 30 from her post as VP Market Development after more than ten years in the position and more than 42 years in the industry (see related article on page 3). Since February, Torsner has been working closely with Poul-Erik Arnvig, North America’s new VP Market Development to help ensure a seamless transition after her retirement. (‘Get to Know’ Poul-Erik on page 2.) Together, Torsner and Arnvig have lead the way in developing new market opportunities for stainless steel, and specifically for Outokumpu’s special grades of stainless.

Market development starts in the trenches, with the market development team engaging end-users to establish their needs. These initial contacts with end-users can occur at tradeshows, industry conferences, and association gatherings. So it is important that the market development team serves as active members of end-user professional organizations. Some of the many professional associations that

Members of Outokumpu’s market development team like Ralph Davison (of TMR) and Madonna Ashbrook, attend industry tradeshows and conferences to engage end-users in their needs for stainless steel.

Avant Gardens is an eco-friendly development of 103 acres designed with you and Mother Nature in mind. The vision for Avant Gardens was simple: develop a small, distinctive community where homes overlook a prairie of native grasses rather than neighbors. Where the backyard views are of forests and ravines rather than swing-sets and swimming pools. And where families share the land with deer, hawks, and pheasants. The result: a community of twenty homesites, surrounded by a private 60-acre Wildlife and Forest Preserve. Lots range from 1.3 acres to 2.7 acres, starting at $155,000.

logo Work

The Juniper Group logo has two boxes representing the two parts of the business: marketing and employee communications. The swash extending outside of the box represents our creativity in thinking “outside the box.”

The Sculptours logo is made to represent elements of sculptures. Sculptours was a tour of outdoor sculpture in Rome, Italy. The Roman numerals were the date of the tour.

The Seared logo is a very clean logo for a residential developer with highly customized interiors. We put a line over the “E” to reinforce the notion of a “brand.”

The Bachelor Pads logo is designed to look like a brick wall in a loft. The logo is designed to look masculine and edgy. Bachelor Pads is a real estate service geared toward single, successful men.

The Avant Gardens logo is for a development of modern homes. The extended “D” in gardens represents the tall, wooded surrounding of the homes. We removed the line in “A” and “G” for a modern and minimal look. The background is similar to a Mondrian pattern popular with the modern era of architecture.
