We are very pleased to welcome Bishop Terry Brown as our guest preacher

this morning. Bishop Terry is the Priest-in-Charge at the Church of the Ascen-sion, and the retired Bishop of Malaita. Originally from the US, Bishop Terry

served for several years in the national office of the Anglican Church of Can-ada, and then was subsequently elected Bishop of the Diocese of Malaita, in

the Province of Melanesia. He served the church in the southwest pacific with

distinction, and is held in the greatest esteem and affection by the church in the Solomon Islands. We are very blessed to have Bishop Terry in our Dio-

cese and in our city. We are privileged to have him with us in the Cathedral today.

Thank you to all those who took names for the Jamesville Children’s Centre toy drive. Please ensure that all gifts are to be wrapped, with a tag attached and returned to the Ca-thedral no later than TODAY. Please observe the $20.00 spending limit. As always thank you for helping to provide a gift for a child in the day-care.

CHRIST’S CHURCH CATHEDRAL

A Place of Community, Com-

passion, and Hope

This bulletin insert is the eleventh in our Fall/Winter series about who we are, and what we do.

Have you ever wondered about our tag line? It’s from a seminar I attended several years ago. “People are looking for community, compassion and hope”, said Dr. Kennon Callahan, Presbyterian pastor, researcher, professor, and church consult-ant. The author of 15 books, Callahan also ob-served that “people are motivated by a theology of service, not a theology of survival.” His funda-mental message is therefore: be a place of com-passion, community and hope; and focus on mis-sion and service. Learning from the experts Have you noticed that hospitals and universities have their own messages of compassion, commu-nity and hope, and they’re especially aware of their mission and service? They promote, inspire, and advance their causes continually. They project enthusiasm and excellence in their public cam-paigns. The results are evident. They are highly respected and their fundraising thrives. Hardly a week goes by without a major gift of a million dol-lars or much more to McMaster, the University of Toronto, The Hospital for Sick Children, or some other

educational or health care institution. They may or may not know about Callahan, but they utilize a Callahan-like approach supported by expertise in public relations, marketing, and advocacy. P. R. and Marketing . . . in church? There’s a role for public relations in every parish – “this is who we are, and what we do” web sites, ads, signs, posters, flyers, and it’s where your published parish story and narrative budget pay off big time. And there’s a big role for marketing in every parish too: “how can we change to be aligned better with what people want and need.” But we must go further. Advocacy Parish advocates enhance awareness, appreciation and support through relationships and partner-ships in their communities. Some parish advocates tell stories, such as their own early childhood memories that encourage new families to get in-volved. Others create displays of parish history. Some make posters of current outreach ministries to confirm and promote parish identity. Advocates respect the views and priorities of oth-ers. They give generously and are positive about the future. In all things they model the vision of their parish as strong, viable, and valuable. They are willing and able to make a difference; and they take our message of mission and service to the community and the world. Barriers to Advocacy There are barriers to advocacy, of course. Some may say – that’s someone else’s job; or it should-n’t be necessary. Others will think it’s too commer-cial, too flashy, and just not acceptable for a church. And we’re much too busy, too powerless, and unskilled. But none of these statements is ac-curate. Advocacy is the responsibility of all leaders, and by definition, all of us. Every one of us can learn to be a better advocate, and every parish can be a place of community, compassion and hope. Jim Newman, Chair, Stewardship Committee

A PLACE OF COMMUNITY, COMPASSION, AND HOPE

SUPPORTING OUR MINISTRIES

FAQs ABOUT INTENTION FORMS What is an Intention Form? Each year all financial supporters of the mission and ministries of Christ’s Church Cathedral are invited to complete an Intention Form. When you complete and sign an Intention Form, you are not committing to a legally binding agreement, you are merely advising the Cathedral of your “intentions” with respect to your financial support for the coming year. Who has access to this information? This information is confidential and only the Cathe-dral Rector or his delegate and the Envelope Secre-tary will have access to it. What happens if I am unable to meet my in-tention for the year? Nothing will happen. There is no legal commitment of any kind. Does the Intention Form reduce my flexibility to change my mind mid-way through the year? No, you may increase or decrease your intention and donations at any time.

Form, the statement will show your original intention and your gifts to date. Christ’s Church Cathedral is a registered charity so we will also send a Tax Receipt after year end (December 31st). Can I use pre-authorized payments similar to how I pay my utility bill? Yes, we encourage Pre-Authorized Giving (PAG). In-structions are found on the Intention Form. If you wish to increase or decrease the amount at any time after beginning the PAG method of payment please contact the Envelope Secretary or the Church Office at (905) 527 1316, or contact the Diocesan Resource Center 905-527-1316 x540. Can I use my VISA card to make a one-time or regular donation? Given that the Cathedral does not have credit card facilities at this time and that 3% of the donation value is lost to fees, this method is discouraged. How-ever, as a last resort, we can use the Diocese's credit card facilities. Ten Good Reasons For Completing An Intention Card For Christ’s Church Cathedral There are many reasons why Intention Forms are beneficial to Church Cathedral and to you. Here are 10 of the most common. You will be:

1. Confirming your gift as your faithful response to

God’s mission

2. Clarifying your intention by writing it down

3. Demonstrating your commitment to your intention

4.Indicating your support of the ministries of the

Cathedral

5. Inspiring yourself to complete your intention

6. Assisting the Cathedral to plan for the next year

7. Assisting your own personal budgeting and plan-

ning

8. Being part of and supporting a larger community in

its common cause

9. Helping to ensure that your gift will be regular and

received when you are away making this type of giving simple and effective
