As a nation, a people and an industry, we have entered a period we can call “The New Normal.” We all get it; we understand and have experienced the effects of a severe economic recession. While some of our industry peers can claim to have not felt the effects, most will acknowledge that times have changed, and it’s gotten tougher out there: tougher to find work to pursue; tougher to secure work with adequate margins; and with those customers that can be had, tougher to negotiate with.

This economic landscape has caused most contractors to do what you might expect: reduce overhead; tighten pricing; and pursue work in sectors where they have less experience. In essence, many contractors have hunkered down to weather the storm.

But the problem is this is not a storm to be weathered; it’s a major sea change, and long-term success requires a shift in strategy and tactics to address The New Normal.

The game has changed. The economic implications of the past two years have resulted in a long-term shift in economic behaviors. The economy will recover, but not recover quickly—nor will it regain its pre-recession peaks for some time. There are some industries that will either never recover, or take a very long time to recover: state and local government jobs; new construction; installation, maintenance and repair; automotive manufacturing; pharmaceuticals; big telecom; newspapers; airline employees; realtors; and bank tellers.

Why we can’t wait it out?

Some may wonder why we can’t simply wait it out, and wait for business as usual to return. The answer lies in an imperfect storm of economic challenges.

25 Years of Delta Scholarships

Foundation Chairperson Bill Jones presented Jon Dartt of Delta Faucet Co. with a plaque recognizing Delta’s 25 years of support for the scholarship program. Delta Faucet Company has sponsored scholarship awards through PHCC each year since 1986, with a total of $375,000 awarded to 150 students pursuing

studies in the plumbing, heating, cooling industry.

Wii Party Lounge is a Hit

The Foundation conducted its first ever Wii Party Lounge & Tournament fundraiser at this year’s convention. Ninety contractors and industry supporters enjoyed an evening of playing video games while doing their part to support industry education.

Eight large projection screens lined a wall of the hotel ballroom, each with a video game ready to play. Convention attendees who made a Foundation gift received a pass to play any of the games, which featured golf, racing, boxing, bowling and other party games.

The party was a shared event with the Quality Service Contractors Reception, a partnership that boosted attendance and helped to lower costs for both events.

Our thanks to the players who packed the room and the sponsors who made the event possible:

Kohler Co. & Foundation Sponsor Seminar Sessions

Kohler Company sponsored the excellent educational sessions offered at the CONNECT 2010 PHCC National Convention. Several of these sessions were co-sponsored by the Foundation, featuring

speakers from the Kohler/Foundation Seminar Series program.

Foundation speaker Kirk Alter provided a revealing look at the nation’s crumbling water infrastructure and challenged contractors to become leaders in their communities on energy and water conservation efforts. Foundation speaker Michael Bohinc revealed how easy it is to be a victim of fraud and helped contractors begin planning their tax moves for the end of the year.

These sessions are now available for PHCC chapters who want to bring educational sessions to their state and local meetings in 2011. Call John Zink at (800) 533-7694 to book one of these seminars.

Plumbing Apprentice Contest

The 2010 PHCC Plumbing Apprentice Contest was held on Thursday, Oct. 28 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., as part of the CONNECT 2010 event. Twelve apprentices from seven states competed for cash and prizes worth over $3,000. This year’s top honors went to:

1st Place – Jose Macedo Raven Mechanical Houston, Texas

2nd Place – Evan Gosnell Paul Southwick Plumbing Centreville, Va.

3rd Place – Andres Rodriguez Suntex, Pharr, Texas

In addition to the contest itself, contestants enjoyed a dinner sponsored by Copper Development Association, Inc. and special seminars provided by NIBCO INC. and Legend Valve. Headline sponsors for this year’s contest were Copper Development Association, Inc. and KOHLER Company.

The New Normal, from page 1

First, the debt: over the past 10 years, the US has incurred an extraordinarily high level of debt as compared to its GDP — $14.6 trillion and 94.27 percent. (In 2000, the debt was $9.95 trillion and 57.02 percent). The only time in the nation’s history we have had higher debt as a percentage of GDP was during the WWII years of 1944-1949.

Second, unemployment: with a Q3 FY 2010 growth rate of just 2 percent, and an unemployment rate of 9.6 percent, unemployment and underemployment will continue to plague a recovery. With certainty, the newly elected Congress will reduce spending—that is the mandate of the people. Some of this reduced spending will most likely be in the form of the discontinuation of extended unemployment benefits. That is good from a cost reduction perspective, but jobs won’t magically appear when the unemployment checks stop. For unemployment to reduce, growth must occur; therein lays the rub. Growth can only occur when capital is supplied to the marketplace.

Third, tight credit supply: small businesses typically account for two-thirds of new jobs created in a recovery. Too many small businesses, like contractors, are too laden with debt, or can’t get adequate credit amid tighter lending standards, even with lower interest rates. While this may lessen in coming months, there are not clear positive indications of this. Top U.S. banks are facing billions in losses from buying back bad mortgages, small bank failures continue in 2010 at a high rate and Americans are swimming in consumer debt.

Success in The New Normal

All we need to do is learn how to completely re-imagine our businesses! We need to:

• Learn how to cultivate a new type of customer–one who values our services and skills;

• Develop our own work without waiting for it to be handed to us by owners, architects and engineers;

• Be able to understand the language of finance and business;

• Be prepared to demonstrate to potential customers their economic benefit in working with us;

• Gain new technical skills which allow us to add value as the project technical experts, instead of simply the installers.

Additionally, we must learn to manage our businesses in a more fiscally conservative style. We need to get out of debt, stay out of debt, and maintain a meaningful capital reserve. As with our personal finances, we need to retain business reserves that allow us to weather

financial storms, and keep us from making bad decisions and taking marginal projects just to “keep the guys busy,” or keep the doors open. What does this look like? A minimum of three to six months of overhead expenses in reserve. Unheard of, you say! Regardless, this will become part of your success in The New Normal.

Another required shift will be focus on the bottom-line rather than the top-line. In a slow-growing economy, expanding revenue will be much less important than creating and capturing efficiencies designed to increase your bottom line. Everyone always says this is what they already do, but the numbers don’t bear this out. The New Normal needs to be a time of profit maximization. Winners during the New Normal will know their costs, understand their inefficiencies, and change the way they run their businesses.

Those who thrive in The New Normal will become expert at creating new markets and new customers; they will master the ability to market and sell. You won’t survive if your strategy is to simply estimate, propose, and wait to hear. Those who succeed will embrace water conservation, energy conservation, utility rates, sewer charges, and customer cost reductions. Not doing this means falling behind.

Technology is also key to succeeding in The New Normal. Contractors who seek the training, master the skills, and take a systems approach to buildings will be the big winners. Those who do not will become lower and lower paid installers of commodities while the new systems technologists thrive.

The next 30 to 40 years will be the heyday of contractors who have learned to recognize the changing environment. Difficult economic times means customers will be crying out for help in minimizing their operational costs, limiting their utility/municipality/tax fees and optimizing the performance of their building systems.

Certain things are guaranteed during this period: taxes (in whatever name you would like to call them) will increase; the abilities of municipalities to provide services will decrease, leading to opportunities to both help them and find alternative means for your customers; utility and energy costs will increase; and incomes will only increase a small percentage.

What does all of this mean?

Your opportunities as a provider of environmental solutions for customers will expand geometrically. Thus, the question is—Do you have the vision and are you willing to do the work it will take to provide solutions and become hugely successful in “The New Normal?”

4 Educational Foundation Focus

I’m constantly motivated by the life les-sons – and business opportunities – of my past. I was lucky enough to work as a kid with some great contractors who didn’t mind giving me advice and investing in my future. Determined to give back, I built a business with sound practices and policies and committed to training the next generation in this great industry. It was my responsibility.

The role of the PHCC Educational Foundation is no different. We have the strength of experience – nearly a quarter-century of helping thousands of plumbing and HVACR professionals. We also have the wisdom to know that these tough economic times are forcing us to grow into something greater than we already are. And, we have the responsibility to you – and your employ-ees – to help you leave this industry (even with its ever-changing needs!) better than you found it.

As you’ll see from the highlights of this year, the PHCC Edu-cational Foundation has been restructuring its resources and working round-the-clock to provide top-notch training through webinars, seminars and other courses, as well as keeping you up-to-date with textbooks, assessment tests, bulletins and other valuable sources.

2010 Foundation Accomplishments Made Possible By Donor and Sponsor Support

• Critical Training. The Foundation provided crucial ap-prentice and journeyman training to students & instructors across the country this year. Highlights included training more than 250 teachers at the three-day HVACR and Mechanical Instructor Workshop; sponsoring the SkillsUSA plumbing con-test that attracted 47 student competitors; participating on the technical committee for the SkillsUSA HVACR competition; launching online plumbing and HVACR home study programs for apprentices; introducing web-based journeyman training courses on safety, green building and HVACR topics; and managing the national Plumbing Apprentice Contest during CONNECT 2010, where 12 apprentices from across the country demonstrated their knowledge and skills.

• Textbooks. As the go-to resource in the plumbing-heating-cooling industry, the Foundation provided plumbing and HVACR apprentice textbooks to more than 3,000 students and published HVACR 301, the third installment in a four-part series of HVACR training textbooks.

• Plumbing Assessment Tests. The Foundation has devel-oped this series of plumbing tests that can be used to mea-

sure student achievement at the end of each year of an apprentice or technical/community college program. The fourth-year test also can be used by contractors to assess the knowledge of prospective employees before they are hired.

• Seminars and Courses. In an effort to maintain the business management and technical needs of exist-ing contractors, the Foundation and Kohler sponsored seminars and webinars attended by nearly 1,900 contractors. Other highlights this year included:

o The addition of residential fire sprinkler training to our seminar series offerings;

o The “Essentials of Project Management” course, which trained 21 project managers and super-visors on effective project management tech-niques;

o The sponsorship of several seminars at CON-NECT 2010 on topics such as business op-portunities in conservation, tax strategies and workplace fraud.

• Scholarships. The PHCC Educational Foundation re-alizes that attracting new talent is essential to the future of this industry. This year, $36,500 in scholarships were awarded to students pursuing careers in the plumbing, heating and cooling industry.

• understanding Overhead. An enhanced version of this software – with the ability to handle up to 50 employees and allocate expenses across 10 different departments – will be available in January 2011.

• Contractor Resource Center. This ever-growing knowledge library – available 24/7 at www.foundation.phccweb.org – continues to help more than 6,000 visitors each month. Contractors can easily search for answers to their business questions, search for every “Facts & Stats” article ever posted to the site, and find other useful articles and PowerPoint presentations used by speakers at Foundation seminars.

• Personnel e.bulletin. Each month, the Foundation’s Personnel e.bulletin delivers timely and accurate information about employee human resources/personnel management issues. This year, the Foundation distributed this e-mail newsletter to 4,000 contractors and industry professionals monthly. All past issues of the e.bulletin are archived on the Contractor Resource Center, located at www.foundation.phccweb.org.

• New Chief Operating Officer. The Foundation welcomed Cindy Sheridan – previously Vice President of Member Services for PHCC – as its new Chief Operating Officer. This is an excit-ing, positive development that builds on the restructuring of the Foundation Board of Directors completed last year. Sheri-

dan’s many accomplishments at PHCC – including spearheading the creation of the popular monthly webinar program and guiding successful educational content, marketing and sponsorship sales for a re-branded annual convention in 2009 – made her the top choice for steering the Foundation as it takes the lead in providing the best contractor education in the industry.

• 2010 Budget. While the budget for 2010 was lean, the Founda-tion’s leadership focused spending on maintaining the Foundation’s core educational offerings. Prudent work by the Investment Manage-ment Committee has enabled the Foundation’s program funds to grow as the market has recovered while protecting the permanent endowment fund.

• Fundraising. Wow … 2010 marked the 22nd year of support from InSinkErator for the “Invest in Your Future Annual Giving Pro-gram” campaign, which helps to support the Foundation’s education efforts for contractors and provides funding for the PHCC National Auxiliary scholarship program. More than 400 contractor gifts and matching funds from InSinkErator and Ferguson enabled the annual giving campaign to reach its $145,000 fundraising goal for 2010. Additionally, the first-ever Wii Party Lounge – held during CONNECT 2010 – raised funds for the Foundation’s training, education and scholarship programs.

The Foundation’s supporters and sponsors make all of these important workforce training and educational resources possible. In the coming

year, we pledge to remain true to our mission of helping contractors grow their success and we look forward to your continued, essential support. Together, we will ensure our industry continues to thrive.

Your Donations at Work

The Foundation’s scholarship recipients often send us thank you letters. Here’s one we’d like to pass along to you—the donors who make our scholarships possible.

Dear PHCC Educational Foundation,

The scholarship that I was granted by the PHCC Educa-tional Foundation has by far been one of the most helpful of all the scholarships I have applied for. I cannot express enough how much apprecia-tion I have for everyone’s support. Without the support of scholarships, I would not have made it this far.

We are all facing a natural resource crisis and it is our responsibility to implement new technology and “green” systems that will reduce energy use and cost, as well as help protect our environment. With the contribu-tions of contractors and other donors in the industry, we can move forward on finding the solutions we need.

Again, THANK YOU! I am so excited to be entering the field of plumbing, heating, and cooling and reaching my goals would not be possible without your contributions. Please pass on my thanks to everyone!

Sincerely, Erika Glapinski
