Duratec have been successful in securing a large tank maintenance contract at Barrick Gold Corporation’s Granny Smith Gold Mine. The project involves the complete refurbishment of six leach and ciP tanks and includes:• Abrasive blasting the internal surfaces;• mechanical repair to any damaged steelwork;• applying a high performance plural component

elastomeric urethane;• Agitator shaft protection of nuts and bolts;• Top of tank structural steel blasting and coating; and• minor external touch ups.

The project has commenced and will continue until May 2011.

Duratec specialises in performing mine site maintenance on remote mining operations and their services were fully utilised recently at a remote wA gold mine where a variety of concrete repairs were performed.Providing contracting services for remote clients can involve many challenges due to limited available services and supplies. Therefore careful planning and preparation is necessary to successfully deliver projects on time, safely and to a high quality standard.

The duratec team were contracted to repair approximately 20m2 of degraded concrete in this remote client’s crusher area. By operating day and night shifts, the rapid completion of the project provided minimal disruption to the operation.

duratec were also engaged to complete four cil tank concrete ring beam foundation repairs. This required the manual breakout of the delaminating concrete. With the steel reinforcing bar exposed, it was abrasive blasted and primed and XP sacrificial anodes which extend the life of the repair were installed. Over 1000 bags of renderoc la55 high strength micro-concrete was reinstated.

Both projects were completed on time and within budget with no recordable safety incidents.

Duratec specialises in mine site remediation and is successfully delivering its services to kanowna Belle Gold Mine where a variety of maintenance projects have occurred recently. The Kalgoorlie duratec division have been occupied performing specialised maintenance services at the Barrick Gold Corporation owned processing plant, 20kms north east of Kalgoorlie. Having many years of experience, particularly in gold and nickel operations, Duratec were asked to refurbish a carbon-in-leach (CIL) tank. After abrasive blasting the tank back to bare metal and performing the required quality checks, a high performance ultra high build epoxy coating was applied at 2mm dry film thickness. Holiday tests were then undertaken to ensure a pin hole free protective coating system. The structural steelwork above the tank was also blasted and painted with an epoxy coating, as was the external two metres of the base of the tank.

The stock pile plinths had shown signs of concrete delamination as the Duratec team set about removing the degraded concrete with jackhammers before abrasive blasting the reinforcing steel. This was then primed, sacrificial anodes installed and the concrete was reinstated before a protective silane coating was applied.

Duratec has also refurbished concrete bund coatings and performed a variety of concrete and steel coating repairs around the site.

Kanowna Belle was opened in 1993 and last year produced 284,000 ounces of gold from its underground and open pit operations.

Duratec are regularly contacted to address and mitigate waterproofing issues. One the techniques employed utilises Xypex’s crystalline growth technology combined with TAM’s hydrophilic polyurethane grout. Upon initial survey and inspection of a water retaining vessel recently, it was agreed that the leaking locations would be repaired using Xypex’s unique crystalline waterproofing technology. This system involves the application and installation of several layers of cementitious based products that prevent the penetration of water and liquids from any direction by causing a catalytic reaction within the pores and capillary tracts of concrete.

The repairs involved the concrete breakout and reinstatement along with injecting Tampur 150 to successfully seal any pre-existing leaking cracks.

unanticipated post construction ingress of groundwater into building structures is a significant nuisance causing unwanted humidity, restrictions on use of basement areas and long term durability issues. Depending upon the prevailing subsoil and water table conditions as well as the nature of the structure the experienced specialist remediation contractor has many techniques at his disposal to prevent or control groundwater ingress after it reaches intolerable amounts. One of the techniques Duratec australia has successfully applied involves injection of polyurethane grout.Water reactive polyurethane chemical grouts were first developed in the 1950s and since then have undergone considerable development to produce highly effective products adaptable to varying sub-soil and groundwater flow conditions. The two main types available are Hydrophilic, (water seeking and scavenging) and Hydrophobic, (catalysed water repelling). Hydrophilic grouts can produce either closed cell foam or non-cellular gel when mixed with water which swell in contact with groundwater or shrink in its absence. This type of polyurethane grout remains flexible and accommodates structure movement. Hydrophobic grouts are catalysed with the polyurethane resin prior to installation in the ground. The dosage of catalyst controls the reaction time and volume of expanded foam produced. The grout has a low viscosity allowing it to penetrate loose and non-consolidated sandy soils readily under pressure injection filling the soil voids and reacting readily with the groundwater contained therein and the groundwater flowing into the structure. The expanded foam combines with the soil, stabilising it to form a rigid waterproof barrier.

Polyurethane chemical grouting is a proven cost effective technique for mitigating unwanted groundwater ingress in below ground structures. Duratec Australia has the skills and experience to develop techniques of grout injection tailored to the specific prevailing site and structure conditions to minimise groundwater ingress and extend the life of important building assets.

in SPec december 2010

Polyurethane grout can be injected utilising several methods depending on the desired outcome, type of substrate, depth of injection and area of coverage. There is no set formula and success depends on engineered calculations, correct injection equipment and materials, extensive testing and trialing and experience.

Duratec has developed and launched their own safety initiative - the “take 6” book. the new pocket safety book has been designed in-house and has been tailor made to suit the scope of works that Duratec personnel perform on a daily basis.

managing director Phil Harcourt says “it is a vital tool to ensure that health, safety and environment is always at the forefront of our minds. By performing a ‘Take 6’ before every task, any on the job hazards that may not have been identified previously can be addressed before work commences. This will further assist in maintaining our excellent safety record”.

duratec has launched their updated website containing more information about the company, their projects and their services.

The Bunbury Port Authority Berth 3 Dolphin Repair Project is progressing well with stage one of the works to be completed prior to Xmas.duratec have designed and fabricated steel templates. The templates enable the exact placement of the fender fasteners into the concrete dolphin prior to the arrival of the new fenders from overseas. The templates, weighing almost 300kg in total, have been manoeuvred into place via barge and lifting equipment and secured in place by the existing fender anchors. This methodology enables the Port to schedule minimal shipping outages during the new fender installation which is scheduled for mid 2011.
