December 2011
Dear Parents, Carers & Pupils,
What a fantastic term!
Everyone has been so busy. Plans for
trips for Morocco, Ethiopia and skiing are
well underway. Pupils participating in a
whole range of competitions from cross
country and rock climbing to Youth
Speaks. The new 3Rs lessons have
started, seeing a whole range of activities
being put on for all years. Not forgetting
all the money that has been raised for
charity.
I have to say a huge thank you to all the staff who were prepared to have ‘things done to them’
for Children in Need. I can assure you the picture above was ‘before’ the sponges.
The School Council have been very active this term looking into uniform, vertical tutor grouping
and houses. It has been such a pleasure working alongside the pupils who are very keen to
change the GTS look for one that is smarter and more distinctive. Please read more about it
inside. I met with the Parent Forum on 6th December where all these proposals were discussed.
In the New Year we will put forward our plans to you all before final decisions are made.
We have to say a fond farewell to a number of staff who are moving on in their careers: Mr Nick
Morgan, Miss Leanne Coote, Mrs Louise Thompson and Mrs Glenda Barnett. We also wish Ms
Hannah Dodwell all the best for the imminent birth of her baby.
However, as we wave goodbye we also welcome new members to the team: Miss Katharine
Smaldon (English), Mrs Nicky Davey (Staff Deployment Officer), Mrs Leah Paiano (SIMS Data
Administrator) and Mr Ben Clarke (IT Technician). We also have the following members of staff
who will be starting in January: Ms Nicky Taylor (English), Mr Matt Anderson (Head of MFL) and
Mr Nick Butler (ICT).
I can’t sign off without mentioning Streetz and the newly emerging Sneakerz. All I can say is
watch this space …..
From me and all the staff at GTS may I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New
Year.

Uniform Change by Dan Barratt (11SMC)
The school has
recently delved
into reform in
terms of the
school uniform.
There are many
changes being
made which we,
as the School
Council, have had the opportunity to be
involved in. Miss Amos arranged a
session, for those of us allocated to the
“New Uniform Team”, with a local
clothing supplier, who brought in a
variety of prototypes for us to try on,
which would be similar to that of our
school uniform if we chose it.
There were many new, bright, colourful
and smart additions of clothing that the
school does not currently have in its
uniform already. Suggested items
included a black blazer with the school
logo imprinted, which looked very smart
on both the boys and the girls that tried it
on, and was a favourite of the Council.
The blazer could be for Years 10 and 11
and could go on top of the new knitted
jumper. The jumper is a lot lighter and
has a different texture to the current one,
being more flexible to move around in
and a lot more comfortable, but having
the same warmth factor as our current
ones.
A clip-on tie is another addition which
blends very well with the blazers, making
the whole uniform look more formal and
indeed smarter. The suggested uniform
would make us look significantly smarter
than at present, and would also give us
our own unique factor compared to other
schools around the area. It is an
exciting thing to be a part of and I very
much look forward to seeing the new
uniform finalised and introduced.
It’s time to clean up your act at GTS
By Rosie Birch 11HJC
Imagine someone gave you £1500 and told you that you
could spend it on anything you wanted. Brilliant, right? Well
that‟s exactly what‟s happened. Our head teacher Miss
Amos has granted the pupils £1500 to spend on anything we
want. (Within reason of course!).
So what‟s the catch? Our school wastes hundreds of pounds each year on cleaning up
the litter we drop, fixing the problems vandals cause or simply just wasting money by
leaving lights on and the harsh truth is the more money we waste, the lower that total sum
of money gets. So it‟s simple, together were all going to make small changes in the
actions we take to make big changes in school. Whether this is school trips to theme
parks, or comfy furniture for lessons the choice is yours. Anything you want we can work
together and get. In the New Year myself and three other year 11 students, Emily
Stanton, Danielle Finch and Dan Barratt will be coming into your assemblies to tell you
about our new project. It‟s time to clean up your act!

GTS Surf season ends with Hot Chocolate and Doughnuts
Mr Avery, Mrs Witney and Mrs
Hornsby and all the surf club
members had great last surf before
October half term, all the surfers
received a certificate from the surf
school, and the surf school also
awarded two hoodies to the two
most-improved surfers this year.
Kirsty Brock year 7 got a lovely pink
hoody for her improvement and
determination and Mr Avery got a
huge grey hoody for going from totally
useless to just a bit rubbish! This
was then followed by our legendary
Doughnut fest with Hot Chocolate all
round! The club now has over 25
members and are always happy to
welcome new members, fun is
guaranteed! The next season of fun
will begin in
April 2012,
when we will
be launching
our NEW
GTS surf club
Hoodies!!

Year 7 took a short walk to the Plough to
watch an outstanding production by
CBBC‟s Dan and Jeff performance of
seven classic pantomimes in just eighty
minutes. The audience was filled with
laughter, giggling, booing, hissing and
singing. The year 7s did themselves proud and
participated in the 3D
experience of driving a coach
drawn by horses; it was fun to
watch and more amusing to
participate. They drove through
rain and snow with full effect of all covering the
audience. Mr Davies had a small cameo role playing
Prince Charming princess to much delight of Year 7.
Judo
GTS have for the past half term had expert
tuition from with Simon Ward from Kingsley
School Judo Club.
Simon has been running taster sessions to
pupils. We now would like to develop and
offer the opportunity for pupils to gain their
first grading. This will cost £10 for 4 months
of Judo and includes all your insurance to
participate. If you are interested in gaining
your first Mon on the red belt, please see
Mr Avery in the
PE Office.
First class will
begin Tuesday

Climbing their way to the top
A group of us got up early one Sunday
morning to go to a Climbing competition
being held at Rock and Rapid near South
Molton. We arrived at the competition in
good time, even after our diversion on
the way as a tree had come down in the
road.
Several other schools were there and the
atmosphere was bustling with excited
children chatting. We each had three
climbs to do. First climb was completed
with great ease. The second climb was a
bit tougher. The more experienced
climbers began to stand out as they
climbed effortlessly and quickly to the
top.
The third climb was tough and
experience and strength really did pay
off. The trick was to watch everyone to
see what the best route would be, even
then it was hard. Only two or three
completed that climb. Next was the
bouldering where you climb without any
ropes. You don‟t climb high but my
goodness, it is tough! I struggled to do
the sit start as did several others, let
alone climb the boulders. West Buckland
School won the competition overall but
we had a great day.

Chess @ GTS
It started with a request to the Parents Friends
Association from Mr John Stanier to see if they
could help with funding for 10 Chess Sets to start
up a GTS Chess Club at lunchtimes in his room
S5.
On the first day he had an extraordinary 42 pupils
attend the club. The room was buzzing and it was
hectic. It hasn‟t stopped since.
If you would like to be placed on the chess ladder (a
league table where you challenge the person above
you and swap places if you win) then please let Mr
Stanier know.
If anyone is interested in learning the game or is an
experienced player please come along. Matches are
in S5, Mon-Thurs. Mr Stanier will be giving tuition to beginners on Thursdays at 1.30pm
and at 1.45pm for developing players. Players that have organised a match with Mr
Stanier can obtain an “Official Chess Pass” – a blue laminated card to get you into the
dinner hall past the School Leaders and Meal Time Assistants.
Speed Dating at GTS
On Thursday 20th of October
all year 10 students took part in a religious
speed dating event with 14 members of various
beliefs. This was one of their collapsed days
where they
focused on
Religious
Education and Citizenship. They were allowed to ask
them any question they liked. The task was to let pupils
find out what their beliefs meant to them and how they
interpret that into their everyday lives. They were given
ten minutes with each guest and then the buzzer went and
they all swapped around.
Helen Whiterod, Team leader of the 3Rs, expressed her
delight at the success of the event and how positively the
pupils held open discussions with our GTS guests.
“Chess is one
Of the few
remaining sports
where we teachers
can still annihilate
the pupils”

E Safety for Parents
Internet Safety Advice from CEOP Help your children to understand that
they should never give out personal details to online friends they do not know offline.
Explain to your children what information about them is personal: i.e. email address, mobile number, school name, sports club, arrangements for meeting up with friends and any pictures or videos of themselves, their family or friends. Small pieces of information can easily be pieced together to form a comprehensive insight into their lives and daily activities.
Make your children aware that they need to think carefully about the information and pictures they post on their profiles. Inform them that once published online, anyone can change or share these images of them.
It can be easy to forget that the internet is not a private space, and as result sometimes young people engage in risky behaviour online. Advise your children not to post any pictures, videos or information on their profiles, or in chat
rooms, that they would not want a parent or carer to see.
If your child receives spam or junk email and texts, remind them never to believe their contents, reply to them or use them.
It's not a good idea for your child to open files that are from people they don't know. They won't know what they contain—it could be a virus, or worse - an inappropriate image or film.
Help your child to understand that some people lie online and that therefore it's better to keep online mates online. They should never meet up with any strangers without an adult they trust.
Always keep communication open for a child to know that it's never too late to tell someone if something makes them feel uncomfortable.
Some Simple Ways to Keep Children Safe Online Get to know your child‟s online habits.
Children are inquisitive. They will look
to explore the internet as much as they
do the real world. Knowing the sites
they go to, the people they meet there
and what they do will help to keep
children safe.
Stay alert to any sudden changes in
mood or appearance, or to any major
change in habits or to increased
secretiveness. These are often tell-tale
signs that something is not right.
Spend some time surfing the internet
yourself. The more that you know
about the internet, the better able you
are, in turn, to help your child navigate
around it without coming to any harm.
Install internet filtering software
showing a Child Safety Online
Kitemark on your computer. Filtering
products with a Kitemark have been
independently tested to provide a
simple and effective means of support
to parents, helping to ensure that a
child‟s online experience is a safe
one. The Kitemark scheme is
sponsored by the Home Office and
Ofcom.

In school We be kind Be cool, In the classroom You be kind here, Try to motivate your friends And inspire your peers, Have a message, A message you need to receive, Be kind Be cool, Let your feeling free. Run loose and revel, Your talent, School is a place Where anything can happen, Harness the power, The power of knowledge. A B and C Will get you into college, You can achieve, Whatever your background Like Christopher Wallace. Pick a target and Soar to new heights, Whatever the obstacle just fight. Fight for your right to learn, Be kind Be cool. You have to be kind at school, Use school as a tool, A tool to prosper, We come to thrive.
School gives you wings, The wings of life, The skills, Skills to fly… Dream Believe Achieve... That’s the motto, Hit the ground running, Learn at full throttle, We can do it… Do it together. Most Important Never say never, Be Kind Be Cool. By Reuben Musgrave 9CD
Prize-winning poet, student Reuben
Musgrave, has written The School Poem.
Given the task by Pupil Coach, Sean
Freeman, Reuben has tried to
incorporate the school values into his
poem „Be Kind Be Cool‟. It is a message
about inspiring others, treating fellow
students kindly and getting the best from
school so you can achieve. Miss Tracey
Amos thinks Reuben‟s poem is
„absolutely fantastic‟, and is, as are all
staff, very proud of this achievement.
Respect
Books used in 3Rs cover all aspects of
Personal, Social and Health Education
(PSHE). The books have been
sponsored by Tarka Housing. Recently
Tarka Housing MD and the publisher
visited GTS to view the books in use
and talk to pupils about what they
thought about the issues in their books.
They also asked pupils about the facilities in the area in particular near their housing. They were
given feedback like “We want to play football, but the older people don‟t want us to play near their
homes”. To which they replied, “We need to think about more open spaces for you to do these
kinds of activities”.

On Thursday 10th November, a selection of pupils
representing all years went to ISCA College, near
Exeter with Mrs Anita Hardy and Miss Vicki McCarthy
to see their vertical tutoring system in place.
Pupils reported their views in a
meeting, including the good,
bad and any reservations to
Miss McCarthy and Mrs Hardy
on their return.
Many felt that it would make
more of a family/community
feel. Quite a few commented
that it would break down the
barriers between the years. The
older students felt that they
would relish the responsibility
to look after the younger pupils
Out of the 14 pupils, 4 wanted to move to Vertical
tutoring, 8 were happy to move to VT or stay as they
are and 2 wanted a trial run. Governors are very
positive about these plans of moving to a Vertical
Tutoring and House System in the new academic year.
BBC Frozen Planet – Doug Allan
Doug Allan is well known for his award winning photography and for his camerawork on the hugely
successful BBC programmes such as the recently acclaimed Frozen Planet and Ocean Giants. We are very
excited to announce that whilst he is touring the UK in 2012 he will be visiting Great Torrington School to
talk about his stories and adventures of his life as one of the world’s leading wildlife cameramen. He will
also be appearing at the Plough in Torrington on March 6th 2012 if you wish to book tickets to listen to his
fascinating talk.
WHAT IS VERTICAL TUTORING?
Rather than pupils being drawn from a single year, the groups are a cross-section of a few pupils from each year.
WHY CHOOSE VERTICAL TUTORING?
It allows pupils to mix, learn and gain support from pupils of different ages.
WHY CHANGE
By introducing a Vertical Tutoring and
House system it would create a family
atmosphere with support from older
students to younger pupils. This
prepares them for the working world
where they mix with different ages.
It allows pupils to have more dedicated
personal time with their tutor.
If you have a tutor group of different ages
you can focus on different year groups at
different times. For instance at the
transition stage for Year 7 pupils, or
choosing options for Year 9 or sorting out
work experience for Year 10s.

Torrington Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition
On Wednesday 23rd November, five teams from GTS took part in the first round of this year‟s Rotary Clubs Youth Speaks competition. As usual our first round was against Shebbear College. All of our teams did very well, with one team winning the competition. So congratulations to Will Huxtable, Susie Roberts and Bluebell Munro who will be representing GTS at the next round after Christmas. In this first round of the competition, GTS teams competed against teams from Shebbear College, providing an impressive evening‟s entertainment for all. Each team comprised three members: the chairperson, the speaker and the proposer of the vote of thanks, all of whom gave confident and engaging performances on a range of topics including deforestation, the Bermuda Triangle, the pros and cons of television, fire safety and the impact of global warming upon less developed economies. All five teams have worked extremely hard during lunchtimes, English lessons and, of course, at home to write, learn and rehearse their speeches. Despite their nerves, they enjoyed the experience greatly and most are determined to take part again next year.
The winning team will not be resting upon their laurels; their year group can look forward to hearing their presentation in an assembly and they will be rehearsing hard for the even greater challenge of the next round in February. Good luck!

Christmas Festivities with the local community
On Monday 12th December, Great
Torrington School pupils and staff
welcomed over 40 guests from local Care
homes to our Christmas Coffee Morning
complete with cakes, mince pies and
Christmas crackers supplied by the school kitchen.
Pupils did a magnificent job serving teas and coffees and baked
treats whilst our guests were treated to Christmas Carols and songs
sung by our very own Glee club
and School Choir.
A lovely atmosphere and
enjoyment was had by all. We
hope that we can repeat the
event next year. Much
reminiscing of school days with
staff and pupils was shared.
Pupils enjoyed themselves and
asked if they could do it again
next year.

READING AND PARTYING
We have a fantastic group of students who
attend Reading Club, from the Year 7s who
attend twice a week improving their reading with
such vigour that they are charging ahead from
their bronze to their silver badges. We are so
pleased with their progress. Our helpers in
years 8,9,10 and 11 are invaluable; without them
the Reading Club would not be as successful. We would like to say thank you to a fantastic
group of students. Mrs Kerr, Mrs Steadman, Mr Bamborough

Maths leaders and Ten Pins
The maths department always encourages pupils to come to seek help when they have problems with class work or homework. There is a bank of computers available if they need help with Mymaths. There are always maths teachers willing to help but also a team of maths leaders from years 9, 10 & 11. This is a dedicated group who help on a rota at break lunch and during morning registration. Working with pupils of their own age boosts the confidence of both those needing help and the maths leaders themselves. The maths department recently took the leaders to Pizza hut and ten pin bowling to say a big thank you for all the time they give up to help others. After detailed statistical analysis the staff were soundly beaten in the ten pin
bowling. Mr Alan Bushnell

Kids Lit Quiz 2011
For the second year running we
fielded two teams in the regional
heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz,
competing for a place in the world
final next year. Two teams from
Great Torrington School were taken
from the KS3 students in Year 7 and
Year 8. The Year 8 team captained
by Bean Travis knew the drill already as they were the „best in Devon‟ in 2010 – this year they
were 4th with 80 points, so well done again! 38 teams from the South West took part and Year
8 won books for wisely playing their joker on the „book knowledge‟ round. Congratulations
also go to the team from Year 7 captained by Lily Chalice, who came 15th on the night hosted
by Wadebridge School.
After tea with all of the south
west students, competition
became even more intense with
the first three teams coming
from Penrice, St Cuthbert
Mayne and Torbay schools,
scoring 83 and 82 points.

questions ranging from nursery
rhymes, picture books,
mythology, fables, classics,
young adult books, cartoons and films. One round was entitled „Ducks‟….do you know the
name of Donald Duck‟s three nieces? Wayne told everyone that they had fought a really lively
competition and thanked them for their hospitality.
Celebrated guest author was Philip Reeve (famed for the internationally famous steampunk
series „Mortal Engines‟). Philip met students, drew cartoons, signed autographs and
congratulated them all on their incredible knowledge. He wished that there had been a similar
competition for him that put readers on the stage, celebrated their reading and allowed them to
compete for fantastic prizes. The spirit of reading is alive and well at GTS. Happy Reading!
